...I remembered reading a black-and-white comic which, while not too
similar, covered a bit of the same territory.
I was able to persuade my poor memory to give me enough information to
successfully search for the name of the book:
Rumble Girls
Silky Warrior Tansie
Lea Hernandez
It's set in a future society where, while parents are no longer
allowed to sell their children into slavery, many children wait to
find out when they turn 18 if this has happened to them. It did to the
title character, who becomes used as a gladiator...
