And Islam took over Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh. And still has
temples in India that used to be Hindu temples. Not to mention a Mosque
where the Second Temple stood.

Sometimes they winners just make your deity a subordinate one.

Thus the Catholics made Quetzalcoatl a saint, thereby keeping his
religion while spray painting christianity over it. In lots of
Mexican churches, the spray job seems to be seriously peeling - much
as Christmas does not look very Christian, neither does the cult of
Saint Quetzalcoatl.

However they made Huitzilopochtli a demon, which meant that any
attempt to worship him would get the worshipper burnt at the stake.

The reason for this differential treatment was that the worship of
Huitzilopochtli required human sacrifice, so it really did have to be
suppressed with fire and sword.
