While it is a literary allusion, as someone pointed out, it's also a
cinematic one -- in BUCKAROO BANZAI the bad guys are doing their dirty
work under the name Yoyodyne Propulsion Systems, Inc.

Thomas Pynchon used it in more than one novel. I think I ran across it
first in _The Crying of Lot 49_, late 1960's.

Yoyodyne was also the name of a company in Thomas Pynchon's _The Crying of

Yoyodyne- A Growing Excited Company!
onenight
But Earl Mac Rauch (who wrote both the screenplay and the even more
wonderfully odd novel) in turn got the name from Thomas Pynchon - the original
(as nearly as I know) Yoyodyne is in his THE CRYING OF LOT 49, which is almost
certainly what Frank is not succeeding in naming.

What's the name of the company in "The Terminator" that manufactures the
Terminator's CPU? I once glanced at the novelization of the first movie,
and if I recall correctly there was yet another instance of Yoyodyne!
These guys are apparently BIG.

I should point out that while Pynchon may have been the original
reference (of which I'll admit I wasn't aware), anyone who is goofy
enough to put a Yoyodine bumper sticker on their car almost certainly
is making a reference to the Buckaroo Banzai movie, not Pynchon.

No that was not a case of misplaced tenses in his posting. That's on the
sign in Buckaroo Banzai. Incidentally, Yoyodyne in the movie was filmed at
the old Uniroyal plant in L.A. (the one with the Sumerian theme to it's
fron facade - and has since been renovated into the Citadel shopping
center). All those wet rooms and the like weren't sets, that was the way
the building looked on the inside after a few years of abandonment. All
the set guys did was to put up a few signs and paint a few doors with
Lectroid phrases like the above quote.
Incidentally, if you can find it - read Earl "Mac" Rauch's novelization of
Buckaroo Banzai (it's a good imitation of a Kenneth Robeson Doc Savage
story).

It's just been made commercially available in the UK. UK format tapes
DO NOT play on standard US VCRs. You would need a) a friend in the UK,
and b) access to a true multi-standard converting VCR. Professional
conversion in the UK costs about 35 dollars a tape.

In T2, yes. But my unreliable memory is from the _novelization_ of T1, in
which there's this extra epilogue chapter where a techno-nerd comes upon
the Terminator's CPU, figures out its technology, and starts a company
based on that technology.
I found this in some used bookstore once, and didn't buy the book. Anybody
got a copy?

For me, the shock came when I read in the paper that some Thurn und
Taxis, maybe the aforementioned Count, had died and left a great deal
of the family fortune to one heir, a young woman who spent a lot of
time in nightclubs and went by the name of "Gloria TNT." Apparently,
at some point they got into banking.
And beer. In Regensburg, Germany, which was once the capital of the
Holy Roman Empire, you can get Thurn & Taxis Beer.
