nanospoiler: the scene we got must have been set about 1714, depending
on how well our viewpoint character guessed young Ben's age. (And if
Stephenson thinks that last name was supposed to be a shocker, he can
have three more guesses.)
Louann
I'd guess Franklin. (I haven't read the sample pages yet, though.)

Mike
Ooohhh, *Ben*'s last name.
Yes, Franklin would make sense.

And is in fact blazoned across the sky in big red letters by the kid's
behavior long before his last name is mentioned. Sorry that I was
unclear about whose last name I meant.
My opinion was -- we were right, Enoch Root is an alchemist with the
philosopher's stone! Woo! And Randy was right to be impressed with how
old Societas Eruditorum is, even if he thought 1990 was old...
A re-read of _Cryptonomicon_ immediately after reading the sample
chapter showed me that I'd missed several mentions of the philosphoer's
stone in cigar box, most significantly I'd missed the fact that Rudy
knows all about it, and that Bobby Shaftoe was right to have been
thinking of himself as a dead man since Guadalcanal. (Very interesting
giant lizard too...) Gosh I love that book. I can hardly wait for the
rest of _Quicksilver_.

Being an ignorant European, this is the first ever (and only - wrong
search terms?) reference I found to Quicksilver sample material in a
Cryptonomicon edition. Since everyone around here seems to know it,
could you confirm that for me and perhaps supply an ISBN or publisher?
Technically, it's already too late. As soon as I stumbled across this
article on Google, I rushed to amazon.com and ordered what I thought to
be the correct edition. If I'm going to be disappointed, however, I'd
appreciate some time to prepare.

The ISBN for the edition I have with the sample is 0-06-051280-6. US
edition, mmpb, from Avon, marked simply 'fiction.' About an inch and a
half thick at the spine.
Louann
I'm relieved to see it seems to be exactly what I ordered. Thanks!
