The ISFDB lists David Weber and Steve White's Starfire series as:

* Starfire
+ The Stars at War (2004) [O/2,3] by David Weber and Steve White
+ The Stars at War II (2005) [O/1,4 (expanded)] by Steve White and
David Weber
+ 1 Insurrection (1990) by David Weber and Steve White also
appeared as:
o Variant Title: Insurrection (revised and expanded) (2005)
[as by Steve White and David Weber ]
+ 2 Crusade (1992) by David Weber and Steve White
+ 3 In Death Ground (1997) by David Weber and Steve White
+ 4 The Shiva Option (2002) by David Weber and Steve White
+ 5 Exodus (2007) by Shirley Meier and Steve White

Is there any internal chronology of the books that differs from this
publication-order one?

(I'm processing the two "Stars at War" omnibus editions for MITSFS and I'm
wondering if there was any sane reason for the [2,3], [1,4] order of the
novels in them.)

Internal chronology is: Crusade, IDG, TSO and Insurrection. I think
Exodus is a later (and not very good, IMO) novel in the same universe.
I don't remember the contents of the two Stars at War collections?

Thank you.

Is the _Insurrection_ in Stars at War II truly revised, as in "the
authors revisited the text and rewrote some of it," or did Weber
and/or White just put back material that had been cut out of the
original manuscript for publication back in 1990?

It's not that important a question, really; I'm just wondering
whether it's more accurate to refer to the 1990 and 2005 versions as
"abridged" and "uncut," respectively, or "original" and "revised."

That I can't say, as I haven't read either volume. I have to admit
there were some issues that needed to be retconned (don't remember
specifically which) due to the insurrection being written first but
occurring later in their universe - possibly he/they addressed some of
those.

There were major additions to account for material from IDG and TSO.
I have no idea of how much of it dates back to the original m/s.
