There was a part in Knife of Dream where LTT seized the Source and was
weaving things against the Trollocs that came flooding through Tear after
him. I had to re-read that part several times, because for part if it, it
almost seemed like Rand and LTT were weaving at the same time. It got me
thinking that maybe, if Semirage/Grendael's theory about Rand already being
on his way to mad is incorrect, and the LTT/Rand incarnation is a direct
result of him being LTT Reborn, that maybe one way that he will hold an
advantage for Tarmon Gaidon is that perhaps he and LTT _will_ at some point
beable to control the source independently of another. While this is
certainly iffy, especially since LTT seems quite mad, it could perhaps
balance things out a bit.

Perhaps a bit strange and unlikely, but an idea non-the-less.

What are your opinons on the Rand/LTT thing? Madness, or a result of being
the Dragon Reborn? I can't say for certain if I ever remember reading that
the prophecies said Rand would go mad and break the world again, or if that
was just what people assumed he would do, because LTT's followers did.

I don't have KoD in front of me (away from home) so I can't quote.
But, doesn't Semirhage say in the scene where she is captured that the
voice probably actually is Lews Therin's? I thought she distinguished
between people who just hear voices in their heads and the people who
actually have past lives in their heads, and suspected that Rand was
the latter since he recognized her on sight. But she also considered
this to be a type of madness, worse and different than regular old
schizophrenia, because it made you act crazy but couldn't be cured,
since the voice was real. Anyway, I thought she had said it was
madness AND because he was the Dragon Reborn.

I like the idea about separate identities doing separate things,
though. Since we know Lews Therin did all that power stuff on his own
during the Trolloc attack, and at the end of that chapter he agreed
with Rand to hold off on suicide until the Last Battle, maybe when they
get there Lews Therin can do what he's done before to seal the prison
while Rand is using his mad blademaster skills to fight off all kinds o
baddie assailants. That would be cool.

Except that Rand won't be able to use his blademaster's skills, because he
just lost his sword hand. ;-)

Hmmmmm. You see far and deeply. And I forget pertinent plot
information easily.

Well, it was probably meant as a joke, but he DID say he was planning
on learning the sword all over again...

Yeah, yeah, it's a stretch. Idea shot down.

I think you're right on this one, but the point was that Semirage was under
the impression that he was suffereing from a form of insanity, and that
while he seemed lucid now, his mind would lose its hold quite suddenly and
without warning. The opposing theory would be that LTT is not there because
Rand is mad, but because he's supposed to be there, because Rand is LTT
reincarnate so to speak, and LTT is a key to winning Tarmon Gaidon just as
much as Rand is. It is entirely possible too, that Rand's "death" may end
up being the death of LTT or rather a separation. I think all the facts
point towards RJ doing some sort of resurrection for Rand, but I'm wondering
what's going to happen with his body. I doubt the Creator is going to have
him just step into someone elses body the way the Gars were brought back
with human stock from the Borderlands.

You ARE right, but then all things seem to indicate that Rand is going to
die and be resurrected, IMO. He of course will probably come back with both
hands and full use of his eyesight, with no wounds at his side I would
think, or else what's the point of bringing him back if he's still too weak
to do what must be done. If that's the case I see no reason why he won't
retain his blademaster skills, afterall he and LTT were both blademasters.
(recall back in the Dragon Reborn, where Be'Lal mentions that it was
actually he and LTT that turned the "sport" of swords, into a tool of
warfare, so it could be argued that Be-Lal and LTT were the first and
original blademasters.

Slightly off subject, but on the subject of blademasters, did anyone else
find it amusing that Rand spent many many books practicing the sword before
he had the right to be truly a blademaster, but the stupid White Cloaks make
Galad one simply by killing one? Rand did that way back in book 2!

Did I miss something? Do we know Rand was left handed? Rand said he would
have to relearn the skills because most required two hands.

Exactly. Most require two hands. That means he won't be able to use most
forms. Meaning irregardless of how good he gets with his other hand, he
will never be the same as he was, and probably have a disadvantage.

"Regardless", not "irregardless". Saying "irregardless" is the epitome
of redundancy.

In any case, you're still missing the point. If Rand was right-handed,
it means he's as good with his best hand as he ever was.

Besides, Rand could create a sword with the Power. Who's to say he
can't create a hand?

Thanks for that unnecessary correction

No, you are missing the point. If the sword forms require two hands, and he
has one, then he is limited as to which sword forms he can use. Period.

> Besides, Rand could create a sword with the Power. Who's to say he
> can't create a hand?

I suppose he very well could create a sword of power again and then he
wouldn't need to physically hold the sword to work the forms with both
hands. Of course when he can't channel much since everytime he grabs the
source he gets dizzy, and then LTT tries to take over that doesn't become
very useful in a sword fight. Getting attacked and then turning dizzy
doesn't seem very safe.

As for creating a hand... again, I suppose he could, we've seen many things
created with the one power, however I'm sure he could create a stationary
hand, but manipulating the fingers would require more weaves. I think it
would take more effort than its worth, especially when he can just grab
things with Air.

Unless of course you're implying he can heal his hand, in which case I think
it should be obvious that no one in this Age has that kind of knowledge, or
Nyneve would have just done it. Semirhage _might_ know how, but she isn't
likely to help him. I've always thought Semirhage would be the most likely
candidate to heal Noal's hands by re-breaking the bones, and healing him
correctly, but the plot doesn't seem to demand that his hands are repaired,
and she isn't very likely to volunteer anyways.

Well, that's basically what I meant: Creating a technique where he
grabs the sword with Air in a manner that replaces his hand during
sword fighting. It should be possible. Seeing as he can hold a sword of
Fire, he should be able to graft the weave to the stump of his arm.

Oh, I doubt that you could actually Heal his hand, at least not without

Not that big a deal. I just wish people would realize how they're
presenting things. It's very hard to ascertain "tone" in a discussion
group. If you had said "I _think_ you're still missing the point" or
something less definate, it would have come off a bit less offensive, but I
try not to let things irritate me because of that very reason.

Right. As I said, he would have that option, if he could figure out what's
causing his dizziness and get rid of it, and also fix his eyes permanently.
But I think we're starting to get to the point where he's going to die, and
most likely be resurrected. We know from what RJ is telling us that the
series is coming to a close, and at the same time, Rand's body seems to be
finally surrendering to all the punishment it's taken. If he does NOT die
soon, he may not be strong enough to do much of anything before long.

An interesting thought. I half wonder to myself, if he does truly become
resurrected (the 'finn's seem to indicate that he will, since they said, to
live you must die or some such) will he still have the heron marks and the
dragons to mark who he is?

Right. I could see Noal's hand being healed, because the bones and such are
still mostly all there, but to create something from nothing in Rand's case
I think is probably a bit beyond the One Power at least by the standards
that our characters know it. I guess if the One Power is the force the
Creator uses than anything is possible, but I doubt they have the knowledge.
Maybe Semirhage knows about tissue regeneration or something, but again why
would she help him?

Well, if each cycle of the wheel is similar, then the Bore (or whatever catastrophe of that turn of the wheel) is repaired twice in
every turn, by two different champions of the light: Once temporarily, and 3 ages later, permanently. It therefore seems fitting
that the 2 champions of this turn of the wheel be there for the final attempt, or at least that the second champion (Rand) be given
the opportunity to communicate with and learn from the first one, so as to get it done right this time.

As for the death and resurrection, I don't see the need for that extra complication in the plot, except as some sort of Christ
analogy.

It may very well be that simple, and I agree with the whole cycle theory you
put out. The only part I disagree with, is I wouldn't say that it's so set
in stone that we can say it's definatley going to permanently healed 3 ages
after. I don't know. If everything was that set in stone, then where would
free will exist? But I think that's opening a subject that's way bigger
than this discussion.

> As for the death and resurrection, I don't see the need for that extra

Well, complication or not, I think that's the direction RJ is going. The
Finn's prophecy to Rand, that in order to live, he must die was the most
telling sign that Rand is going to die, most probably during TG (his blood
on the rocks of Shayol Ghul is supposed to be the key to saving mankind),
and will probably be resurrected. It's my own theory that he will be
completely whole again when he is resurrected. I just wonder if he'll still
have his heron-marks and dragons.

There are a lot of other little details that illude to this, mostly Min's
viewings, Rand's thoughts, and a few prophecies, but the Finn's words are
the most obvious.

Nynaeve could link with all the Aes Sedai with Rand and use Compulsion
on her that she learnt off Moghedien in TFOH or LOC or Logain and the
Asha'man might know how to use Compulsion

I find that very unlikely. Compulsion is taboo. Consider Egwene's
reaction when the possibility of an alterede bond with no emotion
sharing is presented to her. Furthermore, IIRC all the characters that
know compulsion (at least the female ones) have expressed in their POV
that it is a filthy thing to do to anyone.

does Rand use one-handed or two-handed sword? If it is the later, it
does not really matter which hand he lost. I tried to look for some
conclusive reference in EWoT, but could not find any.

Two-handed. Says so right after he says to Bashere that he'll have to
relearn the sword.

Rand's sword is basicly a Katana with a western style quillen instead of
the Japanese style guard. It's a hand and a half sword; it can be used
one or two handed, depending on what you're executing.

Compulsion is definately a no. I just don't think Nyneve would use the
forbidden weave. However, if there were time, she might put an adam on
Semhirage and try to coerce her into more teaching, but with RJ trying to
finish this series in a hurry, I'm not sure that's likely. Also, Moggy was
a complete coward, and Semhirage is definately not. It's hard to say how
much success Nyneve would have with her with the adam. Maybe, _maybe_
Egwene could have gotten something out of her. There's a strong implication
in Moggy's POV that Egwene's time with the Aiel taught her some pretty
radical means of getting something out of her. Of course as I said, Moggy's
a coward. Egwene maybe just knows how to look a little more menacing.

old Japanese schools use long sword (almost) always two-handed. There are
exceptions -- most schools will use sword one-handed in some tricky
situations, and there are schools for fight with two swords (katana and
wakizashi); in those the swords are held by one hand only, of course.
If this is the case in Randland, then indeed, he would have to learn
almost everything from scratch.

Just have Rand or LTT use the OP to hold the sword, or create a sword of

Loony Idea: Rand dies, then is ressurected with his eyes, hand, and that wound
in his side fixed. He would then be at full power in the Last Battle.

People keep bringing this up, but while it's possible, it's just not likely.
Rand is too afraid right now to grasp the source to be able to summon his
fire sword quick enough to use it as a defense. Everytime he siezes the
source, he suffers dizzy spells if you recall, leaving him defenseless
against LTT trying to grasp the source. Even _if_ LTT has settled down with
their so-called "truce", the dizziness is likely enough to keep him from
defending himself against another opponent should the need arrive. If he
needs a sword with all these bodyguards around him, then he's going to need
a sword in a hurry, and the dizziness will give an opponent time to strike
as easily as it gave LTT the chance to take the Source.

I like this idea. Although I always thought his ressurection would
come after the last battle. But yeah, the bad guys get to come back
with new bodies all the time. (Hell, Arangar went from a disgustingly
aged old man to a smokin hot chick) It would almost be poetic justice
if Rand was somehow brought back full strength to win the final
showdown.

You always draw with one hand, and yes, normally you use two hands for
most blocks and strikes, but the sword can be, and this is by design, used
with one hand. Some of the forms have some very intricate bits that are
done one handed. Is using a sword exclusively one handed going to be as
effective? No, but it can be done.

yep, but you would basically have to start using it in a fundamentally
different way than you were used to. Doing say kiri oroshi one-handed
would be really damn difficult (heh, doing it correctly is well beyond what
I can after a few years of training, and I happen to have both hands :-)

Now, I'm going to discard all the hand-regrowing theories here. Face it, if
Rand loses a hand and gets a new one in the next and last book, why bother
to let him lose the hand at all?

About using the Power to replace a hand while using a power wrought fire
blade, why getting a new hand when you have a WOT lightsaber that doesn't
need a hand really, to wield it?

And more importantly, why go for blade skills at all, if you are using a

In response to the LTT/Rand suicide/resurrection/Tarmon Gaidon thing:
I propse that perhaps Rand and LTT will have to work together in the
Last Battle to properly do it. Rand/LTT will die, of course. But i
think Rand will be resurrected w/ hand and w/o terminal wounds (never
healing side injuries) and w/o LTT in his head. I think LTT will
finally be able to rest after the DO is finally sealed away for good.
Rand will no longer be half mad, he will have just his wives and
running the world to worry about.

This has been dealt with in the books several times.

Rand trains in the sword for three reasons. Firstly, so he can defend
himself without relying on the Power and thus won't wind up like Logain or
Taim the first time he's shielded. Secondly, he wants to avoid using the
Power as much as possible and thus have the best chance of not going mad.
Thirdly, he uses it as an exercise to improve his mental discipline and by
extension his control over saidin.

Here's a weird twist on that Bill. Suppose they're BOTH mad, and the reason
LTT is in his head in the first place is some sort of weird link across the
pattern. It's obvious that LTT thinks Rand is in HIS head. The only flaw
with this arguement is we've never seen LTT once reference Rand in regards
to events LTT is experiencing, but Rand has used LTT on more than one
occasion (i.e. to get out of the box, to defeat the Trollocs in Tear (second
time around)).

I guess it's not so much a theory as a "what if" type scenario. There isn't
really much evidence for this, except for as I said, LTT thinks Rand is in
his head. Unless Rand is more mad than LTT and LTT just chooses to ignore
Rand in the course of his dad-to-day, only referencing him when he slips
into the "madness" that is Rand's life.

Yeah, unless I'm wrong and he somehow dies before TG and gets his hand back,
I think we've seen the last of his blademaster days. A few possibilities
though, not necessarily directly involved with his hand, but maybe his
resurrection, or dealing with the dizziness. We have a very implied
reference that Rand will fail TG if Moraine isn't around. Also, he will
fail if Cadusuane doesn't teach him something (most likely how to be human
again instead of stoneface). But what is it that Moraine is going to do for
him? Maybe she'll come back from the Finn's with some really obscure
knowledge.

True. My take on this is that his hand will be returned to him more as a
part of the resolution after the climax. Sortof his reward for his
suffering. I'm just curious as to why RJ would choose such an obvious
biblical reference.

Far Madding's an excellent reference, but how about when he was in the box
and he saw Min get tortured and killed what? Two warders and a injured a
few others with his bare hands before they could detain him.

That could be, except as I keep mentioning, at some point or another this
dizziness nonsense has to be resolved. A lot of people once speculated
earlier in the series that Rand and Ishy represented Avatars for the Creator
and Dark One, but this was before Shadar Haidan's appearance. Another of
the billion plot threads RJ thinks he's going to resolve in one book, that I
think he almost _can't_ leave out is this weird link between him and
Moridin.

When we first saw that passage in CoS, my theory was that the stranger was
actually an incarnation of LTT. This was during LTT's disappearing act
where he wasn't answering Rand for quite some time. Obviously I was wrong,
but I thought it an interesting theory.

balefire can reverse quite a bit of time... maybe he wouldn't even have

Right, in all fairness to RJ, we don't know why yet. I was speculating on a
few things, but we have nothing concrete by any means that tells us what's
going to happen to Rand. We know he'll probably die, either at, or before
TG, and he will most likely be resurrected. There seems to be too many
references to think otherwise. What he's going to do between then and
there, I'm not sure. I still don't see how RJ can wrap this up in one book,
and I think the man is not only being rediculous, but seriously
disrespecting the amount of work he's already put into the series, if he
rushes to an end just because he said he'd finish it in 12 books.

Anyways, enough of that. But if Rand doesn't get rid of the dizziness I
think whatever he does to cope with his vision problems and his loss of a
hand, will be pointless. It may be that he'll learn to see using the Power,
in the way that Addy uses her Sorceress Powers in SoT (Terry Goodkind if
anyone's read it). It may be that he'll use a sword of fire again. But if
he can't seize the source without getting dizzy none of that will help him.

I think it was Bill Brooks who said that maybe the Pattern demanded Rand
give up the sword, as Perrin gave up the axe. It may be that Rand was
rendered nearly blind, and without a hand, to better hone his skills with
the Power finally. I mean Asmodean gave him the basics, but since then he's
basically floundered here and there, using bits of LT's memories. Maybe
given the choice of having to use the Power almost exclusively to see and
manipulate objects he would usually use his hands for, he will have a grasp
of things that other people in Randland have yet to learn.

For example, it's been said that Aes Sedai learn things by certain people
who use hand gestures and then they cannot do the weave themselves without
hand gestures. How much of what is learned in Randland is learned because
it's the only way they know? Maybe Rand will learn something new this way.

Do I remember reading somewhere something that implied (Min's vision or a
prophecy maybe?) that Rand would wonder the world for a time as the blind
beggar?

Now that you mention it, I do recall Min having a vision about Rand
being a blind beggar. Remember back in WH, i think, Cadsuane said that
she'd have to teach Rand to laugh and cry. Maybe this is gonna help
him do this. He'll be useless again w/o eyesight or a sword, or so he
thinks. He'll have to learn everything over again and he can't be
harsh and just ignore people like that. He'll have to learn to be
good-natured and such to learn from the others. Just more ideas.

It's not that Rand is blind yet, There have been various prophesies
before KoD (Min's viewings, the Fisher, etc) that point to Rand going
blind at one point in the story. We think that this problem w/ Rand's
eyes is the beginning of his blindness.

Here is New Theory on Rand's death/resurrection. Now, this is not
necessarily my opinion, but its just an idea I had.

What if "must die to live" points to the turning of the Wheel? If Rand
dies in the last battle (still defeating the DO) as prophecies say,
maybe that means that the Wheel will keep turning, and the DR will live
again, in some other age.

Otherwise, if he somehow lives thought TG, maybe the DO is gone for
good, and the Wheel stops turning, therefore, when Rand dies, the
Dragon Reborn is no more.

No, that can't be right unless RJ is guilty of another inconsistency.
Because the question Rand asked the 'Finn's was, "How do I win TG and
survive" or something to that effect, pointing directly at him. So unless
the Finn's answer was more vague than the statement itself, they should have
been referring to him, Rand Al'thor, not the dragon reborn.

"You can't. Sorry, bub. You might want to ask how you can survive *with*
major injuries, but that'll be one question."

What is "Tim's Vanity Group" and why should any of my posts have been cross
posted, when I'm just posting to one usenet group?

Tim's vanity group is mn.humor. He adds the crosspost to all of his
posts. That way, if you reply to his post, you also do the crosspost,
and this propagates through the thread.

Ok, so I have two more questions then...

1. Why should I care one way or the other?

2. I didn't think you could delete a usenet post unless you were some kind
of usenet moderator or admin or some such. Is it simply possible to delete
your own posts? If you can delete other posts, it would make it a lot
easier to get rid of all this spam on some of the other newsgroups I
frequent, for example you can't even hardly find the Terry Brooks posts on
his newsgroup for all the spam.

Because every time you crosspost, a cute-as-a-button baby bunny gets its
legs torn off.

More importantly, any cranks that might read mn.humor can reply to those
posts, which means the superior newsgroup can succumb to the hordes in
the garbage group.

You can cancel posts, but most servers don't propagate cancel messages.
The reason is the lack of authentication for cancel messages; anyone
could do them.

Deleting the crosspost is done at the top of your reply screen. You
should see a list of the groups your message will be sent to. Just
delete those, and you've removed the crosspost.

I was just kidding about the bunnies. They are not cute at all. They've
got the beady eyes and twitchy little noses.

Properly configured news servers don't allow you to post to non-existant
groups anyway, and his is definately not propogated outside of his local
server.

And lie without actually telling anything but the truth.

I can see one of the weird concept-channellers (not in the
saidar/saidin sense of channelling) in the Academy coming up with the
idea of "in-sewer-ants", the same way people are coming up with the
ideas for steam engines and stuff.

It's an obscure part of the Karaethon Cycle. "Once the heron, twice
the heron, once the dragon, yadda yadda, and new caps for all."

You mean new fillings for all?

I know. Dumas never foresaw it, what with living in the past and all,
when the future was totally like, uncertain.

Scrubs-style comedy would require at least two more things:
* An antagonistic character to play off of, and
* Irony of the situation.

I thus posit that Jordan simply has yet to let Elaida stretch her
slapstick wings. Bring on Alviarhin and the dancing monkeys.
