EXCLUSIVE: "FRINGE" TO GET "HOUSE" BOOST ON JANUARY 11
By Brian Ford Sullivan (TFC)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
LOS ANGELES (thefutoncritic.com) -- FOX is giving a "Fringe" an extra
boost before its upcoming hiatus.
Network sources have confirmed to the site exclusively that an
original installment of the second-year series will follow a new
"House" on Monday, January 11.
Said pair will face off against the time period premieres of "Chuck"
and "Heroes" on NBC as well as fresh installments of CBS's comedies
and week two of "The Bachelor: On the Wings of Love" on ABC.
As previously announced, "Fringe" will take a seven-week break from
its regular Thursday, 9:00/8:00c home in February and March to make
room for the midseason drama "Past Life." The series will then resume
its run on Thursday, April 1.
Fringe should've been paired with House from the start of the season
with Lie to Me paired with Bones on Thursday. Then in mid-season,
Fringe could've either stuck it out on Monday with 24 returning on
Tuesdays after American Idol or, if on the off chance it didn't do
well on Monday, Fringe could've moved back to Tuesday after Idol to
make room for 24 to be back on Monday. But aside from that, I don't
know why FOX just doesn't move Fringe back to Tuesday after Idol
anyway instead of putting on that stupid Our Little Genius. Not that
I'm a Glee fan, but it would seem smarter to have Fringe on Tuesday,
Glee still airing on Wednesday and slotting the new Human Target on
Thursday, which doesn't look like it's going to get far as it is no
matter where it airs.
Fringe would have a better chance at survival if they kept it on Monday for
more than just the one special airing after House. FOX should return
Thursday 9pm to a reality show of some sort as counter programming to what
all the other networks offer.

This is the kind of move that really screws people up when the show
changes nights especially when it's only for one night. Unless they
plan on rebroadcasting the Monday night shown on Thursday night there
are going to be people that miss it. That's not the best move for Fox
to make.

You are expecting the network executives to make programming decisions
that make sense? I do agree that they really should be counter
programming on Thursdays as there's no way they can really impact the
juggernauts that exist there for now. Maybe in a few more years "CSI"
will go away and leave an opening but for now I don't think putting
"Fringe" up against it makes much sense. Going ahead and putting on a
kid friendly show up against either "Survivor" or "CSI" makes a lot of
sense to me.
They did ok with kitchen reality stuff last year, didn't they? Why did they
decide to give up reality fare in that slot? I know that Thursday is highly
valuable, but counterprogramming with something really cheap was still FOX's
best move.

All the kids are watching Grey's Anatomy and Supernatural, though.
Meanwhile, the reality audience at 9pm Thursday is currently untapped.

Assholes. Those one-off episodes in special time slots are easy to miss.
This is worse than bringing back the remaining episodes later in the season.

Is this the show about the avant-garde "performance artists"?

It's a show about the Pac 10 conference.
Oh boy, they move from one overcrowded night to a different overcrowded
night. :-( On Thursday, I can't watch because it's on across from CSI
and Supernatural, and now on Mondays I can't watch because it's on
across from Two and a Half Men, *The Big Bang Theory* and Heroes. Wish
they'd air it Tuesday at 10PM (I'd give up NCIS-LA.), Wednesday at 9PM
(I'd give up the ABC comedies.) or 10PM, or any time on Friday when
nothing worthwhile is on.

I think it's just moving for the one night.
Probably for the purpose of testing what numbers it can make there.
Maybe they're looking for another night to be the _permanent_ home of
Fringe, but Monday isn't it.

The previous week's episode should promote the special airing, so most
regular viewers should be warned. The purpose of things like this is to
attract viewers of House who haven't been watching Fringe.

No, I think they're doing it mainly to attract new viewers. House has
lots of viewers, and many of them may stick around for Fringe, and
they're hoping some of them will then become viewers of the Thursday
show.
Now I know you're joking - there's nothing that says "mainstream
Americana" like Pac-10 Football!!!
And this is why the VCR and later the DVD Recorder were invented. So
people like me can watch 'Chuck', 'Heroes', 'House' and 'Fringe', and
not miss an episode.

Then how come most people can only name USC and "the one with the

Oregon!
And UW, WSU, I think, UCLA...? Maybe Idaho and UNR or UNLV... Stanford?

I bet tonight's Fringe rerun looks better than usual in the ratings
tomorrow...at least until the final ratings come out and the Indy market is
subtracted away for showing the Colts.
They went 5-0 in last year's bowl games. Any chance they can best that this
year?
Side note: I think it will suck if they let BYU and Utah into the Pac-10.
Monday might be perfect, actually. Heroes will be done in early February,
so maybe FOX is thinking about trying to pick up those 'sci-fi' fans with
Fringe?

It's not just football. There are many other things that you know nothing
about as well.
...or is that not what you meant?
Yes, provided that you have enough recorders and/or timer recording
event capacity to cover all eventualities.
Well, that's certainly another possibility.
No problem, I have 4 DVD Recorders. They're more than enough to get the
job done.
I'm supposed to know Oregon AND Oregon State? I barely know where the

I forgot OSU, shouldn'ta... my SIL went there. I grew up in the NW, and
lived in No. CA a few years. I don't follow college football, but a lot
of it sinks in by osmosis through listening to local newscasts and who's
involved in what.
Iexpect you to get confused about Washington State since you East Coasters
mostly think it is a small square between Virginia and Maryland. However,
you should learn where Oregon is on the map: California's hat.
Meanwhile, I'm still wondering why the only Pac-10 team you were sure about
is the one named after a prophylactic.

But this is much worse than an ordinary one-off gag. It's a one-off
with a month hiatus before it and two months after it.
So then, you only like the Buffalo Bills, right?
No there's a run of new episodes in January and February.

As an impartial observer (since I don't care about college football
and only watch what's interesting) I would rank the SEC first for
having the best games, Big 12 second, Big 10 third and Pac 10 fourth
(almost by default).
Honestly there isn't much reason to follow it if you don't live in the
area except to root against USC. I actually know nothing about UCLA.
The ACC just added you to their hit list.
>Honestly there isn't much reason to follow it if you don't live in the
>area
Isn't that true of all the conferences?
If you graduated from one of those schools it doesn't matter where you
live. You might still be a big fan of your alma mater.
I qualify in that regard.
Agreed, but it still goes back to identifying with a regional team (your
region being linked to school days). The point is that people don't tend to
seek out the best college football, they tend to seek out the football they
identify with. As Ian can verify, if people were actually seeking out the
best football something like the Oregon vs. Oregon State game this year
would have been huge while the Florida State vs. Alabama game would have
been considered ho-hum.
Bah. Can't think of any teams that interest me there. I guess Boston
College, just because it's my birthright to despise Boston, but they
aren't a big deal.
> >Honestly there isn't much reason to follow it if you don't live in the

> Isn't that true of all the conferences?
I don't live in any of those areas but those conferences can still
draw me in for quality matchups, in the order I listed.
It would be a perfect slot for a repeat of one of their stronger
episodes, especially one not heavy on the arc. By doing so, those who
only look to Thursday nights for their FRINGE fix don't get burned by
missing an ep, and potential newbies get exposed to one of the show's
better efforts.

No, but then again, my computer is not running 24/7/365. Aren't DVR
hard drives spinning whenever they're plugged in, or do they come on and
spin up right before they're to start recording?
>>Rugby? Or soccer?

Why cannot India and Pakistan conduct all diplomacy on the cricket field?
Whoever wins gets to administer Kashmir. Jurisdiction can shift back and
forth. Anything is better than planning to nuke each other.
. . . only one or two in HD, depending on where you are. The commercials
forget to emphasize that.
Also, U-verse drives have less program capacity than drives in machines

have become.

Truthfully, the most entertaining game I saw all year was the Boise
State vs Fresno State WAC game.

Mine is.

Couldn't tell you for sure.
The one I have, if you are worried about such things, can be backed up
to an external drive or even a computer.

Thanks for the correction. I got the two-month hiatus too soon.
Don't drives take more stress spinning up and spinning down than they do
spinning steadily anyway? So switching a drive on and off a lot might be
worse for its longevity than leaving it on, at least for some drives.
Powering down overnight makes sense. My DVR might go days without being
turned on.

Mine is time dependant. You can leave it running all day, but you can't
leave it running all night without it going into standby mode.

Real TiVos (as opposed to DirecTV receivers which happen to use the
TiVo software) run 24/7. Mine are constantly recording, even in
"Standby" mode which on a real TiVo only shuts down the TiVo interface
allowing the cable signal to "pass through" to the TV as if it were
connected directly. Back in the old analog single-tuner days, TiVo's
Standby feature was a good way to watch one show while recording
another. Now in our age of modern TVs with multiple digital inputs,
Standby is mostly irrelevent.

They should use googles calendar to have it email them when the show
returns.
In other words, typical Fox.
The hiatus for the following two months is a nice touch too. :-(

Not unexpected. What network genre shows have they not tried to kill with
hiatuses, moving the show around, etc. For whatever reasons they love doing
that to genre shows then blaming the show for losing audience <shrug>.
It depends on the design, but mine is the latter.
It is debatable whether it's better for a hard drive to spin down and
up when not used for a substantial period, or to keep spinning all
the time. There are strongly-held opinions on both sides.
Don't they all? Fox may be bad for this (Dollhouse, TSCC, etc.) but true
infamy for this must surely lie with NBC, for the horrible act they
perpetrated in 1969...
Opinions on such matters interest me less than empirical evidence. What
do the numbers and studies say?
It's sad. Friends shouldn't let friends take shows to FOX. I wonder
how long "Human Target" with Mark Valley (of "Keen Eddie" (2003) 13
episodes, 6 unaired by FOX.) will last before FOX Network fubars the
show. Pick your number, now, between 2 and 13 episodes. I'll take 3
episodes.

How is NBC responsible for events leading up to your birth?
LOL!
I was referring, killfiled doofus and soon-to-be-killfiled doofus, to

So I have a friend who has a single tuner tivo. How do you use stand-by
to watch something else. Cuz my friend tells me he can't do that.
I did nothing of the sort.
Obviously you are incoherent.
You use the tuner in the tv or another device, if you're not using the
tuner in the TiVo. Anyway, the pass through would require coax to be hooked
up to both input and output connectors on the TiVo for that to work.
In addition to having the correct hook ups, the feature may be controlled
by a menu option.
Some set-top boxes can be set to bypass mode, which means that the tuner
in the box isn't tuning in the signal, that the raw signal is sent to
another device.
Oh Pacman!
Weight of public opinion says otherwise.
>Obviously you are incoherent.
Obviously, you need to learn to deal with it better.
