Note the scores for the episodes that aired later, compared with the score
for the first episode (The Train Job) that aired.
One wonders what would have happened to the show had the voters in the poll
been Fox scheduling and/or marketing executives.

I have already ranted about this before...
The Train Job was a great episode, it is only because FOX screwed Mr.
Poochie (for girls?) that it got a low rating... If the episodes had been
shown as aired, TTJ would have gotten in the mid 4s...

What the heck, I've seen all the episode so I'll add my comments.

Television might be a bit better place (and Fox is already losing
money so they probably couldn't do any worse financially).

All excellent, excellent lead-off. A lot of nice things, good lines,
and a solid plot. I'm not sure I like this as the *best* episode but
that could just be me. The reshoots improved the end product a bit
but I still wonder why Fox didn't air it. At least a 4.5 so I don't
mind the final score.

Now, I like this but not *quite* as much as what its ahead of. Still,
it was nice seeing Alan Tudyk get more work, more tidbits shown for
Book, and I'm a sucker for River/Simon stuff. A personal favorite.

Good, good plot driven story that added some to the overall background
of the show. Possibly the most "sci-fi" of the shows episodes with
the least amount of "western" in it. A lot of cool stuff and more
than a bit of creepy stuff. To bad we probably won't see this stuff
persued.

See I find this more than a bit high (particularly compared to what
its just above). As much as I *loathe* to agree with the Television
Without Pity crowd I think Jubal Early spoke too much and it took away
from his initial menace. Still, the opening 10-15 minutes or so was
absolute gold. I'd rank this somewhere between a 3.75 and a 4.

Personally this is still one of the shows top three episodes (for me
its this one, Ariel, and Serenity, I don't pick a "favorite") and is
also the place when a lot of us stood up and said "Hey, something
special is going on here" I think. Lots of good background and some
really great humorous sequences. This episode also got a good notice
on Peter David's (comic book writer, Star Trek novelist, writer of
episodes of Babylon 5, Crusade, and Space Cases) weblog is anyone is
curious.

Quite good, more of a humor episode than a lot of the show's others.
Neat climax and a good guest character.
> 7. Jaynestown

Fun, decent Jayne episode. River seemed a *tad* inconsistent with her
portrayal elsewhere in the series but its not too bad (and was pretty
funny to boot). Some nice Kaylee and Simon stuff too.

Good build up but I agree with those who felt the conclusion was a tad
rushed. Still we did get some good background on Simon and River
through some nicely acted scenes (by the way, is it just me or did
Summer Glau get really good as an actress over the course of this
series?). This is, in my view, better than anything I've seen from
Drew Greenburg on Buffy as well as a fair place for the episode.

Some nice atmosphere and good direction that is undone by the story's
weakness in the explanation of Reavers. Though there is a really nice
FX shot of the vastness of space here that I like. The end product is
just average and it appears that the end grade reflects that.
> 10. Shindig
> 3.46

Solid, inoffensive little episode that brought back Mark Sheppard (who
did some nice work). Not a world beater or anything but there wasn't
anything wrong with it (aside from the fact that I sort of felt that
they wasted Larry Drake in his role here...) but nothing that really
stands out either.

This wasn't *completely* awfull, but there isn't a lot to recommend
it. We have some nice bits from Adam Baldwin, solid FX work, and a
really cool end bit but I can't say there was a lot else to like in
this one. I think leading off with this episode did more to hurt the
series's appeal to the masses then anything else that happened to it
over the course of the season (which was quite a bit).

For George to have posted a five for "Serenity" every single person who
voted in his poll would've needed to give the ep a five. <g> As it is, for
it to rack up a 4.72 means that there weren't many low scores, and those low
scores probably weren't all that low in the first place.
I do agree with you about Train Job though; it's a much shiner ep if it's
seen immediately after "Serenity".

George, do you (or can you) do a similar comparison against other genre
shows ? I'm curious to see how Firefly's shortened season competes against
Trek et al.

I think "much more shiny" is the proper usage.
Or would they say "shinier?"

I'm purty sure that "shinier" is more better.
