Greg Grunberg's promise to fans: 'Heroes' will be back!
by Michael Ausiello

Ratings shmatings. Greg Grunberg says Heroes will be back next fall
for a fifth season and hes got proof. We wrapped yesterday and the
[final episode] is nowhere near a series finale, he told us at last
nights Peoples Choice Awards. It is cliffhanger-y and exciting, but
it is nowhere near an end to a series that people are so invested in.
It does not tie everything up in a neat bow I dont have any doubt
that the show will be back.

Grunberg cites Heroes strong DVD sales and international success as
two reasons the show will go on. We will wrap it up properly in the
next season and get to 100 episodes, he maintains. At least thats
what I would like to see happen. They take so much care in writing the
show that I would hope we get the chance to end it right.

Lost announced an end [date] and I think that helped both the people
working on the show and the people watching it, he continues. They
see the finish line and I think it gives them something tangible to
invest in and be excited about. Its like its a movie and they want
to see the end of it. Thats what I hope happens with our show.

Speaking of Lost, Grunberg confirms that his ill-fated Oceanic pilot
will play a role in the shows Feb. 2 season premiere. Whats the
context? Well, with [Lost], they go back and forth in time so you
have no idea when and where the last season will take place, he says.
I may get eaten all over again. It may be a flashback. It may be an
alternate new reality where I am on the same flight but we dont crash
and I dont get eaten. Maybe Im a ghost. You never know. (Reporting
by Carrie Bell)

What a fucking self-absorbed smug clueless moron! Oh, like a show's
NEVER been cancelled w/out a closure episode. Right. So that means
'Melrose Place' writers can just keep writing 'til their heart's
content and eeeeeeeverything will be alright. Ooh! Writing like that
keeps the evil Boogeyman (TPTB axe) away. Sure.

A comment on the EW.com article from a viewer:

"Greg, your show just dropped below five million viewers for the first
time ever with Monday’s episode. How much longer is NBC going to rely
on the crutch of DVD and international sales when viewership in the
host country is setting new series-lows with each passing week?"

"Greg, meet 'Pushing Daisies'." (no closure episode)

That's just hilarious that someone would maintain "they take so much care in
writing the show". Simply hilarious. If they had taken some care the show
might have actually gone somewhere other than in circles.

It didn't have a full closure episode but they made some attempt at closure
at the end of the last episode.

This is an actor on the show speaking. Do you think that
he'll be biting the hand that feeds him? Of course not.. Not if he
wants to continue working in Hollyweird anyway.

Sooo? Lots of shows have been canceled on cliffhangers Mr. Greg
Dipshit. Spielberg's Earth2 (one of my favorites), Space Above and
Beyond, Surface, Farscape, Jericho, and so on. Although I *hope*
Heroes doesn't end on a cliffhanger, I doubt the suits care and will
happily pull the plug.

Or just go direct-to-DVD like SG1 and Atlantis did.

The next season will probably be the last. They promised shorter,
less drawn out storylines but this carnaval storyline has been going
on since the beginning of the season and its getting tiresome. They
need fresh ideas.

I think they made a mistake when they pressed the reset button at the
end of Season Three: everybody right up to the President of the United
States knew about people with powers living in America but now
suddenly HRG is talking about keeping such people out of the spotlight
and re-integrating them into society. Maybe in Season Five they can
go in the opposite direction and have some powered people come out
publicly and try to achieve some fame and fortune from their powers.
It doesn't make sense that people in Season Four are still saying "I
didn't know there was anybody like me" when they find out they have
powers.

He was the one that leaked through a tweet that someone was getting
killed off at the time that they were filming the episode that Nathan
finally allegedly gets killed for real this time. Dovetailed with the
blind item that Ausiello had at the same time that a regular on a hit
show who's been there since the first season didn't find out he was
getting killed off until the he got the pages for the scene that they
were filming that day. Ausiello later confirmed that the
show/character his blind item was about was Heroes/Nathan.

The actor certainly *doesn't* know more about the show than the
producers do -- however, the producers know *everything* about the
show that the actor does. Thus, the mere fact that Grunberg tweeted
about this is EXPLICIT evidence that the producers allowed him to do
it. Actors relaying hype through whatever means is virtually always
cleared by the producers.

And the thing about Grunberg, IMO, is that, like Colin Ferguson on
Eureka, he gets the whole thing about interacting with the fans
through these electronic-y, interwebby doohickeys. Ferguson likes to
do podcasts, Grunberg likes to Tweet. I think Ferguson's way is
Awesome and Grunberg's is "Eh, not so much," but then again, I despise
Twitter. Got to applaud Grunberg's ongoing interest in making sure
that the information flows out as fast as he can get it out there,
though.

And, finally, given Lenogate, I think the peeps at Heroes have every
reason to be confident that the show is going to be back next season.
Because it's actually better than it's ever been since season 1.
That's not to say that it's anywhere close to being as good as season
1, it's not. But it's a thoughtful, worthwhile season that IMO feels
to me like, even though Bryan Fuller didn't stay too long at the end
of last season after Pushing Daisies was cancelled, he held Tim Kring
and the remaining writers hostage until they got interested in the
characters again.[1]

There was never any evidence that the existence of powers was made
public. The president may know, the NSA/CIA may know, and the special
forces guys who rounded them up may know, but presumably they're
covered by whatever the US equivalent of the Official Secrets Act is.

Didn't HRG reject the offer to rejoin Primatec? If so where is he getting
the money to fund his schemes? I feel like I missed something somewhere (or
forgot) that addresses HRG's ongoing involvement in all of this.

Going even further in the opposite direction, they could have everyone
suddenly lose their powers as fast as they appeared in season one?

Fortunately, it's not as if the show could be canceled while plot points
remain unresolved. That's *never* happened before. Oh, wait.

Well, it's not as if they could cancel the show and then tie up any
unresolved plot points in another way, like via a web comic, or
something. Oh, wait again...

That still doesn't mean anything, and I question the source of
this as Grunberg is an ACTOR. While he might have worked with Abrams
for a number of years now (going all the way back to Alias), it's
entirely probable his leaking this information was done at the request
and/or approval of the producers.

Ask any actor when you get the chance and the best they can
know about anything going on on a show and it's usually the production
time of the episodes -- 6 - 8 weeks prior to it happening. Further if
you get the chance of looking at an acting contract you'll see that
they have specific non-disclosure clauses which would prohibit them
from leaking anything unless otherwise authorized by the producers and
the production house.

If you remember in the "Fugitives" storyline, Bennett had a secret
storage of weapons, files, and money, from his Primatec days. Odds are
that someone as resourceful as he is has more than one of these stores
hidden across the globe.

This is something that irritates me. Setting up those kinds of "secret
caches" takes a lot of time and effort. Enough that if you're setting
up a lot of them, you don't have the time and energy to be doing
whatever it is you are _supposed_ to be doing that might require said
caches!
