Wow!

Not just the best JodieDoc episode so far, but possibly
one of the best DW episodes ever. That was amazing.

I don’t know how much of this was written by Chibnall
and how much by co-author Maxine Alderton, but one
of them really knows how to make the best use of the Weeping
Angels. All those contrived new powers they gained in
ToA/F&S, which just seemed like a clumsy way to pad it
out to two parts, are finally being put to good use.

We already saw images of Angels becoming Angels last
week, but now there are new twists to it, such as a burning
drawing becoming a fiery Angel. Powerful stuff.

The idea of a person turning into an Angel because of
an image in the eye or mind is also done in a way that makes
more sense than the original. I love the idea of an Angel
hiding in someone’s mind, hoping that its host doesn’t
give it away by becoming an Angel too.

Claire and Professor Jericho were great characters: well
written and well acted. Jericho showed his hidden depths
when he mentioned being at Belsen, and it was great to
see him draw on that when he stood against the Angels
later. I hope he comes back next week.

I’m not too sure about Claire knowing the Doctor by an
Angel-induced premonition but it’s a new twist on the
wibbly-wobbly time-loop idea, so it should at least get
marks for effort.

And I know it’s a small thing, but I thought the brief argument
earlier about whether to stay on the ground floor, with
access to possible escape routes, or to hide in the more
easily defended basement, reminded me of a similar (though
much more drawn-out) scene in the original version of
“Night of the Living Dead.” Other fun touches included
the Doctor saying, “When I say ‘Run,’ run!” and reversing
the
polarity of the neutron flow. Always good crowd pleasers.

I found Yaz and Dan’s subplot less pleasing. While it was
great to see Yaz getting a chance to demonstrate her police
skills, and Dan got a couple of good one-liners, it just felt
less urgent, less important.

The revelation that the village was now in space didn’t
make much sense either. Where was the sunlight coming
from? Why was the gravity still normal? What was keeping
the air in? Was there now a village-sized hole in the Earth’s
crust allowing lava and/or Primord-producing green goo
to spill out over southwest England?

(In my personal head-canon, it was just an illusion and/or
hallucination and the village hadn’t actually moved anywhere.
I know this contradicts one or two minor lines of dialogue
but it’s better than contradicting common sense.)

I also didn’t like Peggy’s cold reaction to the deaths of
her guardians. Someone that heartless would not have
grown up to be the well-adjusted woman we saw. (Maybe
Yaz and Dan will be a good influence on her over the next
few years, but how will she react when they’re snatched
away from her to rejoin the Doctor? Will all their good work
be undone?)

Still, this is just nitpicking. Even with these faults the subplot
was no worse than average. It was only a slight disappointment
compared to the Doctor’s amazing main plot.

And of course it was the Doctor‘s plot right at the heart of
the cliffhanger, as the Angels captured her and transformed
her into one of them. (Some people on other forums have
speculated
that this means the Timeless Child’s true species was really
an Angel all along, and she was just being restored to her
true form, but I don’t think so.) Either way, it was one of
DW’s greatest ever cliffhangers ever, followed by the re-arranged
theme music and interrupted credits to emphasise the
impact on DW itself! Perfect!

Let’s just hope the standard doesn’t drop off over the next
two weeks.

Given the way Gerald in particular had treated her, I thought Peggy's
cold reaction was perfectly understandable.

Shows how much attention you have been paying to Flux! You've even the
cheek to "review" the episodes... yet clearly don't know what's going on
in front of your eyes!!!

(Hint: Claire always had two arms.)

Bel and Vinder is the only reason I still care about

I watched it carefully, and still have very little idea of what's
going on because it's largely incoherent.

It is apparent, however, that they have wiped their ass with 100% of
the established background of the character, which surprises me not
at all.
