Syfy renews 'Stargate,' 'Sanctuary'
Cable net hands each series a 20-episode order
By James Hibberd
Syfy is expanding its commitments to "Stargate: Universe" and
"Sanctuary," granting both series another season.
"Universe" recently aired its freshman midseason finale. The show's
hiatus will extend until April, and Season 2 will debut in the fall
along with a third season of "Sanctuary."
The Friday night shows have commenced production on their next seasons
in Vancouver and have received 20-episode orders. "Sanctuary" has
averaged 2.2 million viewers in the fall when seven-day DVR data is
included. "Universe" has averaged 2.6 million.
Debuting after the conclusion of Syfy's critically acclaimed
"Battlestar Galactica" and the cancellation of "Stargate: Atlantis,"
"Universe" has charted a tricky course through the network's fandom.
Striking a tone that was more realistic than previous "Stargate" shows
though not as grim as "Galactica," some viewers were miffed the show
was not familiar enough.
"We're dealing with 15 seasons of expectations with a certain
fanbase," executive producer Robert Cooper said. "Hopefully, as the
show goes on, people will appreciate 'Universe' for being its own
thing."
With a fall-finale cliffhanger that left the ethically compromised Dr.
Rush (Robert Carlyle) stranded on a planet, Cooper said the season's
second half will become more serialized and build on the fractures
within the show's group of spaceship-trapped castaways.
"The implications of leaving Rush on the planet, the real division
that will cause amongst the crew, the judgment of those characters and
their actions are going to have a big impact on the show," Cooper
said. "We have a lot of things planned for the second half of the
season."
The show also plans to have more scenes set on the ship, as opposed to
cutting back to drama on Earth, and will introduce a full-bodied
alien.
"There is a big story point coming up that does introduce an alien
race," Cooper said. "It's more along the line of a "District 9"-type
alien. Our interaction is handled in a very "Universe" way; they're
not the typical "Stargate" alien bad guys."
>

Thus cementing my decision to stop watching. I said previously I
would give it until the mid-season break before making a decision.
Now it's done. I'm not so interested in watching the stranded group
fracture into political subdivisions while coping with their personal
issues at home. Many may like this show, but it misses the mark for
me and I'm not one to waste my life watching a show because "it's the
best thing on during that time slot".
Good. Now if Amanda Tapping could just wake up from a head wound and
lose that stupid British accent and her stupid co-star could stop
standing around with his mouth hanging open.
Hey, Siffy - you can get back to me when you rehire the Danish girl,
and the hott Invisible Girl, on "Sanctuary"!!

She's from Toronto, where she lived from age 3. Actually, I didn't know she
was born in England till you said something, but her natural accent should
be, uh, Torontish.
Why not?

In BSG they were facing instant death at any moment. In SGU they are
stranded, but are in immediate peril. Death by boredom?
Another typo
I meant they are in no immediate peril.

I like to think of her as payback for Jason Statham's American accent, which

Actually, I think the Zoe actress is quite cute. But there are limits to

I much prefer good eye-candy on a *good* show (e.g. Vampire Dairies)!

I watched some episodes of 'Sanctuary' and it seemed like her British

Not unless theirs was the only English she heard. Her accent should sound
like the accent of kids she went to school with, with a touch of her
parent's accent blended in.
If you're the producer, you can recast.
>Ian (Now season #2 of "Nowhere Man"?! YES I CAN!!! :> )
I'll contribute to that production fund.
Because.
And we can't get enough of the Replicators!
Last week they did their THIRD bottle show where Carter and Harry Potter
get stuck in a plane crash/underwater and it's just the two of them for
an hour.
This week they did another one of their "run around outside in the alley
so we don't have do to our horrible lame green screen sets" eps
What was the point of the secret rendezvous anyway? Why not just have
Daniel Jackson walk up to the Sanctuary and hand over the Elemental?
For that matter, why not have their resident teleporter just pick up the
Elemental in Chicago in the first place? Oh, that's right, they killed
the teleporter in that "Carter sees the future episode" a few weeks ago,
except NONE OF THAT EVER HAPPENED, IT WAS JUST A VISION and yet the
writers are apparently so stupid they think he's dead; at least he
hasn't been seen or spoken of since.
They can't possibly find the bullet ridden gray car from another car,
the search MUST be conducted on foot! It's the only way! So their
Bigfoot walks around until he finds the gray car, all doors akimbo,
bullet holes everywhere, parked where they left in, on the side of the
street. Nope, none of the dozen people searching for a car could ever
find it THAT way.
You have a bullet in your breast! I must dig it out with a penknife and
then leave it completely untreated, otherwise you will bleed to death!
So new hot chick finds out Daniel Jackson murdered her father and is
going to kill him for it when she thinks he blew up a bank and her
father was collateral damage. But when he explains that he was TRYING to
kill her father, and the other people in the bank were the collateral
damage, she SPARES him, because, um, well, I got nuttin. I'd have put so
many rounds in him he'd have seeped through into the apartment
downstairs.
Let's not even get started on how his stomach pouch is all airtight so
the Elemental doesn't require refrigeration, but if you put it in ANY
thing else, it has to be cryonic.

Yeah, that was offensively stupid. The treatment was much more likely
to nick a critical blood vessel than leaving the bullet in place. He was
definitely going to damage the muscle tissue significantly that she's not
going to heal up ever. If the bullet were left alone, there'd be risk of
infection and possibly metal poisoning, but I doubt it would have been
life threatening in the next few hours.

She's a thief. She's horrified that her father violated HONOR AMONG THIEVES.

Duh. He consumes Slushy after Slushy, turning his stomach into an ice pack.

If her parents grew up in Essex (her place of birth), shouldn't it sound
something like a London accent? It's harsh and unpleasant, so I suspect that
she's not a good mimic.
Just to add to this pointless thread, there are different accents every
few miles in England, the result of everyone being bound in place over the
ages by outlaws and various other reasons. It is disappointing to think of
all the thespians doing Shakespeare over the years in a plummy accent that
didn't even exist in his time.

And to make it worse/better (depending on point of view)... Two
British friends have watched episodes of Sanctuary, and they both say

And London has a couple of different accents or more anyway. There's
probably half a dozen different dialects in the whole country, just like
the US. So there's various forms of 'English accent'.

Yeah, I'm always suspicious when people who aren't from a given
country claim that someone else's replication of an accent from that
country is bad. I still get a kick of out of the fact that Laurie
managed to top a poll in England of bad American accents. (Although
to be fair he also topped the matching poll of good American accents)
I'll tell you a secret about most of the English actors you've heard.
Their accents are as fake as they would be if they were American.
Because England has so very many distinct regional accents the odds
are high that no matter what accent you hear an English actor speaking
with, it isn't the one he grew up with. In particular, that plummy
accent that you'll hear from actors playing toffs and scholars is
almost certainly one they learned, since very few actors are actually
from upper class or highly educated families. That's why they call it
acting.
I'm allergic to vampies, so i haven't seen it :)
I hear they are going to meet an alien, but it wants to have sex with
them *g*
She's stretching her acting muscle ;)
I'm assuming its the best faux yankeey imitation of received

I remember when LOST first premiered, there was quite a bit of criticism
about how "fake" Emilie de Ravin's Australian accent was and how lame
the producers were for not being able to find an actress who could do
one decently.
Of course de Ravin *is* Australian, born-and-raised, so her accent was,
by definition, as authentic as it gets. I guess in some people's
simplistic minds, everyone in Australia sounds like Crocodile Dundee,
and if they don't, then their accent must be fake. No awareness of the
fact that accents vary widely within a country, and even within cities.
Wouldn't be surprised if there's a bit of that going on here with
Tapping as well.
> I'll tell you a secret about most of the English actors you've

I'm talking about English shows (or British shows); so you mean
to tell me they're faking their own accents? I'm not talking the
high brow fancy accents; just normal English folk. Well, let's
say as normal as you can find when it comes to actors....<g>
I'm thinking shows like "Torchwood", "Are you being served",
"Keeping up Appearances", etc.
Gisele
> Yeah, I'm always suspicious when people who aren't from a given

Well, when you've heard someone speak a certain way for 10 years,
it's hard to listen to (and believe) a different accent,
especially when it sounds so very, very fake. Sorry...

That's interesting that she's inconsistent with it. That certainly
doesn't help. I can't watch it regardless because of the accent and the
show is just too focused on monsters; too silly.
> What did you think of Winona Ryder's accent in Dracula?
That was bad too.
Gisele
I tried to watch, because I loved the whole monster angle. I just
couldn't get into it. Hubby still doesn't forgive me for not
recording the pilot. He got into it without seeing the pilot.

I thought so as well, but in a survey done by some London paper (a
couple of years ago), she was either number one or number two *best*
English accent by a non-native speaker (with Keanu making the worst
list for the same film <smile>). That was by English speakers
(British?).
I believe that's what he is saying. Most English actors don't use
their 'own' accents. They use what might be called "British
Standard" (like there used to be American Standard, and actors had to
lose Southern, Northeastern, etc., accents). It's why they all sound
pretty much the "same".
Could you imagine trying to understand Cockney (or some of the more
northern Scots)?
Eh, real or not I'm not fond of it. It just makes her character seem
colder.
I remember an interview with Billie Piper about coming back to Dr Who
after she had done a season of "Secret Diary of a Call Girl". It was
hard for her to get Rose's accent right after she had been doing
Belle's "posh accent". Point is, neither of those accents is her native
accent, which I've never heard.
>I remember when LOST first premiered, there was quite a bit of criticism

Who said that? She has a very pleasing voice, a lovely face, and a nice figure.
Wouldn't change a thing.
>Wouldn't be surprised if there's a bit of that going on here with
>Tapping as well.
Believe what you like but it's a straw man set up on the basis of "unnamed
persons" who criticized Miss Ravin. I hate when people object to things said
by people they won't name.
I don't find Miss Tapping's accent pleasant. It's not comparable to Miss
Raven's situation as she should and does sound Canadian. We have only
someone's theory that she's mimicking her parents. Some actors sound
natural when doing an accent; she doesn't.

Half a dozen within a few blocks of the City of London, I expect, and perhaps
hundreds on the island of Great Britain, if not thousands.
It's nothing like the US.
I didn't want to go overboard with my estimations.
> It's nothing like the US.
Really? There's a lot of regional accents in the US.
I'd go with your first estimate of half a dozen, which is nothing considering
our population. We can all understand each other. The English cannot.
Isn't she supposed to be, sorta?

There is more variation within the British Isle than geography would
presume. One speculation is that this variation grew from relatively
isolated pre-mass literate communities.
By the time the US got going there was both easy communication and travel
over large distances and the language had become standardized - somewhat
frozen if you will - in written form.
It follows that while the numerous and varied linguistic invasions of the
various parts of Britain - the Roman Latin, mixing with the Angles, the
Norse, the Celts, the Saxons, the Normans, caused variations that the
linguistic polyglot of American mass immigration did not.
Agreed. It's like watching "Dr Who" with David Tennant and then
hearing him speak with his real accent. Very different.
Oh my.. I watched some show set in modern time where they had a bunch
of people speaking in Cockney. I'm not certain but I believe it was
their real accents and I could only pick up a few words out of each
sentence. I even tried replaying scenes over and over again and it
didn't really help. I had to wonder if the people that lived in
England but weren't exposed to the heavy Cockney accent on a regular
basis understood that accent.

I tried, but I kept giggling at the hankerchief on his head, and we were
interrupted by this blancmounge . . .

Yeah, she varies a lot. You could see an entire ep where it's not a
problem.

Oh, God, I hate that movie so much, I hate the individual frames of film
it's on, I hate each and every sprocket hole that transports them. I
have no recollection of what her accent was like.

A bunch of people over in the LOST newsgroup. There were whole threads
about it.

No big conspiracy here, chief. It was several years ago. I remember the
threads and the discussions but, not being Rainman, I don't remember the
names of the people who did the criticizing.

I don't find most people with Brooklyn accents pleasant, either.
Pleasing you is not the producer's main goal, I suspect.

It's "Miss de Ravin", not "Miss Raven", FYI.

Kevin Costner's was pretty atrocious in "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves"
also.

Thanks for rehashing an old Usenet argument I didn't need to know about.

You know, people spout off on Usenet. That complaint doesn't necessarily
keep them from watching the show. It's not necessarily representative of
the viewing audience.
She's adorable and has a sweet voice. I can recognize an Australian accent
if the speaker grew up in Sydney or Melbourne, but her accent didn't sound
like that. IMDb says she grew up in Mount Eliza, Victoria. My neighbor was
from Australia. As she didn't sound like she was from Sydney nor Melbourne,
I surprised her by guessing correctly that she was from Perth, but that was
just luck on my part as I'd never heard a speaker from there.
>>I don't find Miss Tapping's accent pleasant.

Who does? The Kennedys have horrid accents but it doesn't keep 'em out of
elected office.
>Pleasing you is not the producer's main goal, I suspect.
Thanks for informing me my opinion is worthless. But your theory seems off.
Why would it be a producer's intent to have a lead character, your story's
hero, speak in a harsh accent?
>>It's not comparable to Miss Raven's situation as she should and

That sounds utterly silly when not using French honorifics. I don't
refer to von Beethoven, just Beethoven. The lady will have to forgive me.

I wonder if Australians approve of Mel Gibson's accent in "Mad Max"?
Some of his early years were spent in America. He's difficult to
understand in that movie.
>Agreed. It's like watching "Dr Who" with David Tennant and then

I've heard him interviewed. What's wrong with his natural speaking voice?
He should have used it when playing The Doctor.
Considering he wasn't speaking with an accent...
Nothing is wrong with his normal speaking voice. It's just that the
accent he has when speaking normally is very different from the voice
he used when playing the Doctor. I see it as a good example of how
actors in the UK will tend to try for that standard British accent
instead of using their own accent.
He was certainly doing something out of the norm for his normal speaking
voice. If it wasn't an attempt at an accent, then it was even more
ridiculous, whatever it was.
I have heard Galleyfreans speak English before. He did a rotten job of it.

Your comment assumes that I'm even remotely concerned about what you do
and do not need to know about. Rest assured, chief, I'm not. Not
everything is about you and making you happy. Hope that clears that up
for you.

Neither of which has anything to do with whether her accent is or sounds
authentic.

It doesn't stop TV producers from putting people on TV with Brooklyn
accents, either.

No problem. Everyone needs a dose of reality every now and then.

It worked for Arnold Schwarzengger.

It's her name. She decides what's proper and what isn't, not you.
And in any event, honorific or not, it's Ravin, not Raven.

People tend to win arguments when the other party isn't present. I wish
you congratulations on your victory. You should take great pride in your
accomplishment.

Are you sure? Much of the time, I hear "Hollywood Brooklyn", so I suspect
that's not an actor born and raised in Brooklyn.

From a conversation the two of you had?

Spelling flame!
I think there's easily a dozen different accents in the US - there's
probably 6 or more in the NE/Atlantic seaboard alone.
Enough so that Mel Brooks took a potshot at it in "Men In Tights". <g>

This is from way back, but I always understood that US actors had to adopt
the "Universal accent." Probably not as true today?
