ABC cancels "Last Resort," "Park Avenue"

ABC Cancels "666 Park Avenue," "Last Resort"

LOS ANGELES (thefutoncritic.com) -- ABC has pulled the plug on its
freshman dramas "666 Park Avenue" and "Last Resort."

Both series however will continue to broadcast their initial
13-episode orders on Sundays and Thursdays, respectively.

The news was first reported by Deadline.com.

"Last Resort" and "666 Park Avenue" both posted a 1.3 rating among
adults 18-49 in their most recent telecasts, matching their series
lows.

Last year's time period holders "Charlie's Angels" and "Pan Am"
suffered similar fates as the former served up a 1.1 in said demo for
its final Thursday broadcast (11/10/11) while the latter - following
the more potent "Desperate Housewives" - actually outperformed "666"
in year-to-year comparisons (1.8 on 11/13/11).

I am not surprised at all to see 666 cancelled as it is doing horribly. I
am a bit surprised to see LAST RESORT cancelled just because ABC has done so
poorly in the timeslot for so long.

I wish the'd lasted the season, maybe they'll run them out, but Last
Resort was one of the few adult series on network TV.

Disapointed to see both go but not surprised. Both lost close to half
their audience since their premiers.:"666 Park Avenue" 6.9 million
down to 3.9 million. And "Last Resort" from 9.31 million to 5.68
million

Next week it's probably off because of US Thanksgiving special
programming, then if they can find an excuse for a replacement the next
week, they should be okay. After that, people will assume it's missing
due to Christmas programming (yes indeed, one "local" radio station went
all Christmas music yesterday, it's that time of the year) and that will
give it about another month for people to forget about it.

Because you guys are numbskulls - "Last Resort" is far dumber (and more
insultingly so) than "Revolution", the latter of which plays more like a
harmless 1970s Saturday morning kids show.

seemed to come off like a series that had some idea where it was going.

have been a factor - Not wanting to spend money to rebuild for a show
that was on the bubble.

Last Resort was completely crazy but it was probably my favorite new
show. I'm pretty bummed about this. Basically, all the dramas I like get
cancelled during or at the end of their first season. Last season I
liked Terra Nova, Missing, and Awake.

Nope. LAST RESORT was winning the stupidity war hands down. Now, with it
being cancelled, the contest will have to be between REVOLUTION and
ARROW...and ARROW is winning that war for stupider show.

I think that ARROW and LAST RESORT both have more brutality than REVOLUTION,
which is ironic given that the other two air two hours earlier in the
evening.

I would put /Awake/ and /Journeyman/ in the same class -- fascinating
premise, great execution, tiny audience.

It seems anything I like has a tiny audience: /Parenthood/, /666 Park
Avenue, /Partners/. (That's in descending order of quality: I
thought /Partners/ was popcorn, but good popcorn. /Parenthood/ is
right up there with /Homefront/ and /Friday Night Lights/, really
excellent shows that never got the audience they deserved.
/Parenthood/, at least, seems relatively safe for the moment because
NBC has nothing else to put on.

HIMYM has been putrid for years. It's a measure of how bad that show's
gotten that I'd rather suffer through with "90210" on as "background
noise" while I do other things... :/

Forgot about "Arrow". But that's the only decent show on Wednesdays at

Good call. I liked Journeyman also. That was cancelled before Christmas,

30 Rock has been fantastic this season. It's like the writers remembered
that the show was a comedy, or something. There was enough funny stuff on
the recent episode that even Hazel didn't kill it.

Well, I'll agree that ARROW has avoided violence against women for the most
part, but that is also because the women are mostly portrayed as damsels in
distress. LAST RESORT had the female hostage of the mafia beat up a bit,
and the female politician gunned down but that show, too, tends to have the
executions and continuous hostage beatings reserved for the men. I'm not
perticularly inclined to think that violence doesn't count if it is against
men, though. Brutality is brutality.

Yes, I realize the new internet means people with tablets and smartphones,
but I suddenly got DSL last month and while that does change things, the
reality is I find now that I can easily do something while watching tv I
do, and thus get distracted.

I am finding myself missing bits, even more than usual, because I've gone
off with my tablet to wikipedia to check something.

Equality is equality. If women want to be in the armed forces, etc. it
comes with the territory. At that point, one person being brutalized
isn't any better or worse than another.

First rule of Nielsen ratings: the meter doesn't count who is watching, it
just counts if the TV is on and who claims to be in the room with that TV.
If you spend the whole time tweeting about a show and miss half the plot,
that is a *win* for the network ratings. If you DVR the show so you can
carefully watch every single frame (and rewind frequently to catch any plot
point you miss), but FF past the commercials, that is a *lose* for the
network.

Highly unlikely. Did you miss the many references in the first two
or three episodes to the fact that the order did not come through
normal channels? If it had been the President, the order would have
come through normal channels, but it didn't so it wasn't.

We all know that. What he's actually referring to are the visual cues
we were given in the episode as to where the target really was. We see
the mushroom cloud from the positions of the Washington Monument and
the Capitol, and the orientation of the Statue of Liberty. Someone
triangulated ground zero from that, and they say it turns out to be
approximately Annapolis, Maryland, a little over 30 miles from DC. I
haven,t done the math for myself, but the Washington POV shows the
mushroom cloud NE of the city. We know from dialogue that the missile
passed over Indiana on its way, so it had to have made a hard left
after it passed over the Washington Monument.

FWIW the cloud is very big for one that's supposed to be 200 miles away.

That's one you really have to chalk up to Artistic License. They are
looking at making dramatic pictures that tell a story and not looking
at getting the triangulation perfect.

Very similar was the TV show Jericho (in 2006) where a mushroom cloud
over Denver was shown as being very impressibly visible roughly the
same 200 miles away to the east in the next state (Kansas). Same deal.
If it was completely out of sight, or if you could just see the
teeniest bit of the mushroom as a pinhead-sized speck on the horizon,
that just wouldn't carry the drama to the viewer.

Too bad on Last Resort, but probably not unexpected. I've been watching the show and the question I had from the beginning is where the hell can they go with this story? They're on a (real) island blockaded off from the rest of the world. Not much room here for development, and now that the Captain has finally taken down the petty thug who rules the island not much left there to do. How many times can you send secret squads onto the island before that wears out? That only leaves the Washington intrigue and that has only so much it can do too in the way of suspense. So, the sub can fire off a few more missiles? Escape to a new island? What to do?

I think the networks should work out a new concept: when they get a new idea, and Last Resort is a good one, they should really hunker down and see where they can take it and for how long. We've heard nothing about a timeline for LR so it would seem the writers would have made it up as they went along. So if you can't find a meaningful multi-year arc for your story, then be content and make it a one-year show and announce it as such. LR would make for a good one-season show: it could develop its characters and have a decent-enough plot without having to spin it out forever. And I think people would watch it, knowing that by April or May all the questions would be answered and the story ended.

I'd already pulled the plug on the resort, but the 666 news bums me out.
Still, after reading about the storm damage to the sets, it's not like I
didn't see this as being a real possibility.

But now that Locke is already in NYC, I wonder if he might hook back up

Yep. So I've sampled four new shows this year. Two are gone by choice
(REVOLUTION and LAST RESORT) and one is gone via network decision (666
PARK AVENUE).

And if ARROW doesn't make some changes, it's likely that I'll be 0-for-4
soon.

And I'm about ready to give up on NCIS, which continues to just phone it
in. And I'm more or less just watching FRINGE for the closure that I
still don't really expect to get. And GRIMM has just gone on break.

It's a good thing I like books and sports...

Could that have just been another example of the actress losing her
focus and the director not wanting to do yet another take because of
her? I've read that she has a habit of smiling at the wrong times, for

I don't think so. She was looking at her forearm, and the brand was
shown to be inflamed and oozing. It was a realistic depiction of a bad
burn.

This is not to be taken as a defense of the character, the actor, or
this show.

I gave up after the season premiere. The show has turned into a Xerox
machine, chugging out copies of "a petty officer is murdered" week
after week. It's just not interesting anymore.

In Doctor Who in "Logopolis" the Master destroyed a good chunk of the
universe. This didn't happen in a parallel dimension or other such cheat and

Janeway reset time itself killing everybody everywhere, but you raise an
interesting point ... did she only kill everybody in our universe, or in
the entire Trek multiverse as well? If the latter, then she killed an
infinite number of people and wins, or at the very worst ties.
