The movie has a relentless pace and is cartoonishly bloody, but it I
enjoyed it. I've never been really fond of movies that are paced so
fast that you never have time to catch your breath. That's one reason
I didn't even go near the Bourne flicks or most martial arts movies.
But they ditched the overuse of the shaky cam in favor of gorgeous
anime-style visuals. Plot wise, it's a pretty standard revenge flick
with a whole bunch of clueless folks caught in the middle. Finally, I
have to admit that JMS surprised me again. We all know that he can
build and build to a phenomenal conclusion. But I never would have
thought that even he could also maintain this kind of pacing without
the movie deteriorating into chaos. I love being proved wrong when the
results are this good. Now, if Raizo's Manrikigusari could have just
hit the two clowns behind me who talked on their phones through the
whole movie, it would have been perfect!

I enjoyed it as well. However, I don't know what all the other artists
are going to do, now that all the red pixels have been used up...
-Wendy
Don't worry, Wendy. I hear that red pixels are a renewable resource so it's
probably a temporary shortage.
I was pleasantly surprised when I saw it this morning. I really had no idea
what they meant by 'stylized violence' so I didn't know if I'd be able to stand
it. There were still plenty of places where I closed my eyes until the mayhem
stopped but I still enjoyed it.

As an anime fan I like to hear that. Might check it out this month.

I can't decide about this. It's JMS, which almost guarantees a good
story, but it's a martial arts movie. In my opinion, on a scale of one
to 10, that whole genre is contained in the space from 1-3. So, haven't
ween it yet, haven't decided if I ever will. Maybe when it hits the
local dollar theater.
i loved the genre when it was filled with the bad films years ago...
so needless to say, i absolutely LOVED this movie.
it was basically what i was hoping for years ago when i watched the bad
ones and thought "i wish they had a budget to make these movies good"
and noticing the JMSisms in the script only added to it.
"is he alive?"
"after a fashion"
