Pardon the reply to myself but I've been watching the sales ranking on
Amazon.com. Last night when I put in my pre-order, it was over 10,000. This
morning at 7:30 AM EDT, it was 2,118. Now, at 8:00 AM, it's 1,108.

Agreed. Last night, I noticed that the only other pre-order item in the top

Now at number 5. <g>
Rounding out the Top Ten:
1. Planet Earth - The Complete BBC Series
2. The Queen
3. Night at the Museum (Widescreen Edition)
4. The Secret (Extended Edition)
5. Babylon 5 - The Lost Tales
6. Planet Earth - The Complete BBC Series [HD DVD]
7. Planet Earth - The Complete BBC Series [Blu-ray]
8. Deja Vu
9. Casino Royale (Two-Disc Widescreen Edition)
10. The Last King of Scotland (Widescreen Edition)
So this little direct-to-video title is attracting more orders than
the hi-def versions of one of the biggest and most-hyped TV events of
the past year, the latest incarnation of James Bond and a multiple
Oscar (tm) nominee. Not bad. Not bad at all.

I also believe this has "bubbled up" in the public consciousness again
because Oprah recently did a show about it, and tosses it into the
conversation a lot since that show:

Ah, OPRAH talks about it. That explains everything. I have to confess that
I'm not immune to her evil sway myself ("Joinnnnn us...."). I recently got
suckered in by "Oprah's bra," but to her credit, it's a great bra!
Amy
So it's basically the old (new age, metaphysical, whatever you want to call
it) adage that "energy flows where attention goes," with a little creative
visualization thrown in for good measure. But it's gotten trendy because of
"The Secret." Okay, got it. Thanks.
Amy
Yes, I do get the basic concept of it -- "energy flows where attention goes"
(I think I got that reversed in my reply to Methuselah; that's what I get for
posting on no sleep, right after rolling out of bed!) -- but I'm curious to
know where it entered the popular vernacular. If you didn't see "The
Secret," where'd you hear about it? Who was talking about it that got you to
start using it?

Other way around, I should think. <g>
And yes, from the 5 seconds I spent looking at the Amazon page for
"The
Secret", I'd say the "Law of Attraction" thing is part of it, or is an
older
idea borrowed for it. Basically the usual "If you build it (or in
this
case, *think* it) it will come." Imagine yourself rich and you'll
attract
riches, that sort of thing. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go
think about Kirstin

Creative visualization. The idea's been around a loooong time. Thanks to

Oh, ick! I had totally forgotten about that. (I only saw the film
once, and that was enough. Not only did it generaly suck - pardon the
pun - but there was a really disturbing JonBenet vibe about the
"little girl" character that I suspect you can kind of get away with
on the page, but on screen was just too much given that there was a
real little girl actress under that makeup.) Thanks for ruining Mary

sellers. I have a copy somewhere on a shelf, but I don't think I actually
ever read it.

One size fits all!
And I couldn't wait for the R2 release so I guess I'll just have to
plug my old DVD player back in when the R1 version arrives on my
doorstep. :)
Perhaps, but it's awkward to walk around the office or the gym like that.

But most office dress codes won't allow for that option, even on
casual
Friday. It is also impractical for driving.

Oh but it would feel soo good.
Now as I drive off to work I will at least have a smile on my face.
Thank you.

Non-fiction? Uhhhmmmm... :)
ummm ... Amy? "Interview with the Vampire" was released in 1994. By
that logic, the Olsen twins - as they are now - shouldn't be
considered attractive simply because the whole country has watched
them grow from infancy. I'm curious, are you equally skeeved by Harry
Potter star Daniel Radcliffe's nude turn on stage with Equus?
Joe, I suspect that the JonBenet vibe was deliberate on somebody's
part. Since I never read "Interview", I'm not certain if that was Anne
Rice or the director's idea. Personally, I liked it from the
standpoint of an artist pushing the audience out of their comfort
zone.
Okay, I'm going back to lurking before I really aggravate somebody.

Yeah, meaning it isn't a novel, it's a self-help book. Lots of people are
Christians, but whether you are or not - do you refer to the Bible as
fiction? Same difference! ;-)

Oh, I didn't say "not attractive." It's just hard for me to think of her as
anything but a little girl. I was a _big_ fan of Anne Rice back around that
time, and I went to her annual Halloween ball the year IwtV was released.
Kirsten Dunst was there. I saw her around town a lot over that week, and
also _in costume as Claudia_ (the vampire child), at the ball itself. She's
pretty much cemented in my mind as a little girl. :-)

Honestly? A bit. But that didn't stop me from looking at pictures from the
production. :-D

The Claudia character was written as a kind of grief-processing response to
the death of Rice's own daughter, at around age five, from leukemia. The
point of view of the other vampire characters in the books was that it was an
abomination to 'turn' a child, for just the reason that squicked out Joe:
eventually, she would be a woman, eternally a grown woman, in the body of a
child. So not exactly Jon Benet, but a similar sort of vibe, I guess.
Amy

Actually it may be that the pagent photos of JonBenet reminded me of
the child-vampire from "Interview", because the film was released
nearly two years before her murder (and the book long before *that*.)
So that "vibe" couldn't have been deliberate unless someone involved
owns a time machine.

Joe

Interesting. I never had this problem with Bill Mumy, Patty Duke, Ron
Howard (even though he was adorable in the "Music Man"), or Kurt
Russel....
(and whilst jogging my memory about Kurt Russel, who really did remake
himself and got out of the Disney/child actor mould in which he
started his career, I noticed there's a pre-production listing for
"Escape from New York" [2009] - WTF? That movie really doesn't need to
be remade)

I read "When I worked at Batman..."

Especially when both of you have jobs.
Remake? Or third installment?
(By the way, am I the only one who managed to work, "Snake Plisken! I
thought you were dead!" into their viewing experience of 'Grindhouse'? <g:>)
Amy
Yep, the ol' publishing house. Batman Doubleday Dell Hulk. :-D

According to a March 12, 2007 article in Variety magazine, Gerard
Butler is close to signing a deal where he will play Snake Plissken in
a remake of Carpenter's movie.

Top one...
Call me cynical, but could the reason that they are remaking it be
something to do with the fact that the Twin Towers are no longer
standing? Snake landed his glider there.
I see no reason why it should be remade.

My cynicism says that it's simply another example of how cautious and
unoriginal Hollywood's become. I'm sick of remakes!
>> I see no reason why it should be remade. <<
Agreed. All you add with most remakes is better special effects, and
sometimes that just doesn't help (and in fact hurts). The exception to the
rule is something like "King Kong," which restored missing parts of the
original script, or "The Wicker Man," which filtered the original story
through a more modern socio-political sensibility (both of which fell flat,
IMHO). Most remakes are more like "Planet of the Apes," "Texas Chainsaw
Massacre," and the upcoming remake of "Halloween" -- simply an attempt to
make use of spiffier technology.
In the case of "Escape from New York," I think that better effects will
_decidedly_ hurt it. I just love the cheesiness of that film, _everything_
about it. It pains me that they're going to try to improve upon that.

"Halloween" is being remade?

Brad Dourif ... Sheriff Leigh Brackett ??? Dourif as the law?
Well, at least Malcolm McDowell ought to be able to do a respectable Dr.
Loomis.
Once again, they're using California for Illinois, so no authentic fall
foliage.
