though my head. An-ti-ci-paaation, it's making me wait ... :)
Hope you clear up the rumours of new comics work, one way or the other.
A short story collection of the Amazing, offical B5 magazine, & new
stories from Del Rey would be nice... <thud! whack! thud!> Gee, that
dead horse still won't move.
Also, when is that NPR SF drama series you and Harlan are involved in
starting?

Before you buy.
Nothing there can happen until later down the road a piece. The problem is
that, while freelancers can kinda work year round, there are only two periods
during which show runners are hired.
The first is late May/June, when series are commissioned from pilots, and those
that don't already have a show runner attached need to find one. I missed this
slot last year because we didn't finish posting on Crusade until late May, and
because I've kind of been off the network radar screens for six years doing B5
and Crusade, they weren't even aware I was available (that has since changed).
The other period is late July/mid October, which is when show runners go in and
pitch series to studios and networks, which are then developed into pilots that
are shot prior to the following May, when the decisions are made as to what
goes and what doesn't. The Chris Carter situation went through this past
development season, and when Fox pulled out after Harsh Realm went down,
development season was over.

Thanks. I wasn't feeling old enough today.
That "old" ketchup commercial used a song that was a hit when I was a
kid.
If this isn't one of the things on your plate, have the producers of Farscape ever
approached your or have you approached them?
Thanks for B5!

I have rarely seen a message that manages to be so astonishingly rude on so
many levels simultaneously.
And in so few words. Perhaps he's a reincarnation of FATboy or Theron.

No kidding! And there I was thinking how nice it was that JMS gave us an
expanded answer that explained a lot about the industry!
Thank you for NOT ignoring him and for calling him the boor he is, JMS!

Am I missing some history that's gone between JMS and Gareth, and thus
some red-flag words in that first message? Or, am I the only one who
took Gareth's post as just an attempt at (utterly utterly deadpan ironic)
humor?

Generally speaking, when one has run a show, one doesn't then go down the
pecking order/hierarchy to freelance for other shows; it's VERY hard to climb
to run one's own show, and the moment you start back down again, it's damn near
impossible to get back up again.

I was thinking the same thing.
These young whippersnappers don't realize that a lot commercials in
recent years have been targetting our generation by using some of our
great old music. "Anticipation" was sung by Carly Simon, wasn't it?

If there's any history between them, I'm unaware of it. If it was an attempt
at humor I'd class it as moronic rather than ironic.
The most obvious implications in his statement were that A) JMS couldn't find
or keep a steady job and that B) JMS' main or only reason for maintaining a
presence here is to 'milk' the fans for financial gain rather than his stated
(and oft-demonstrated) purpose of opening a window for us to see what the
entertainment industry is about.
In other words, Gareth's post was rude, crude and socially unacceptable. I'm
glad JMS said so.
Jan
You mean someone still read the unmod group? Glad I never met this FATboy.
Theron and the other one (you know, wosname) were bad enough.
Corun (see, you can forget)
You missed it completely. Several years before it was a used on a ketchup
commercial the song was a hit by Carly Simon. She was once married to
James Taylor. Both were music artists in the late 60s. So it wasn't the
commercial to which Keith was referring, but the original song.
*sigh* Kids.
Corun
Forgive me if this is out of place, but that doesn't seem very fair. After
running your own show (and writing most of it!) it ought to be clear to
everyone that you can do what you want very very very well. It's too bad the
"Can'ts" have to be critics.
On the other hand, if it were *me*, I wouldn't necessarily want to write
into someone else's universe, I'd want to make up my own again, after having
done it before. It seems to me that JMS has done that at least three more
times, since Crusade was cancelled. All Farscape would be is a setting for a
story, and in my experience reading 'em, settings are interchangable for the
most part. I think that writing to Farscape would be a limiting factor,
rather than anything particularly cool.
What matters is the good story, not the starfuries.
Just please be sure to announce the ISBN number et. al. of this new novel,
when it comes available.
Rob
Or maybe he's just British...sometime we forget how thin skinned most
Americans are compared to the British (us Scots even more so). I for one
find it hard to see how the post could be taken as offencive unless I
/really/ try.

Then what about having fun and writing with a pseudonym?

I haven't read the unmod group for years. Same with the UK group. Ever
since the original Bab-l folded and the Cygnets took wing. ;-)

I thoughtlessly posted it. I was going to expand on it and make it more
obviously a joke, but thought I wouldn't. I *almost* deleted it before sending
it. Now I wish I had.
Once again, sorry for the insult. I have nothing but respect for you. It just
struck me as funny that, even without having a "steady" job, you have done so
much (with the comic, the stories - both the outlines and the short stories, the
series you unsucessfully pitched to fox, etc, etc) it seemed ironic that you were
finally having something to announce here.
No insult was intended. *Sooo sorry for my thoughtlessness.

Bartleby, "Dogma"
"Dostoevsky" was taken.
I don't understand how it can be beneath someone. There have been several
threads here in this newsgroup -- they're still there, you can find them --
asking what's coming up next for me. This in addition to the many private
emails that I get with the same question.
So I began my message by acknowledging those who have asked, and shown an
interest, which I thought was the polite thing to do.
Thus I have *no* idea whence comes your statement.
Okay. Over and done.
Now there's a name that will really scare the cat! <g>

Try early 70s. At least that's when they started--they are still
both recording today.
And I'd been an adult for many years before Carly Simon recorded
"Anticipation". *Sigh*

I thought Kafka might be a good choice. I can
see it now. Joe Kafka writes a Farscape episode
on them running into a ship of suits who try to
take over. Who would guess?

Other than its ability to scare people with tongues, is there
some significance to "Dostoevsky"?
In terms of the pecking order, how does producing a movie
compare with running one's own television show?
