Hi, Joe ... sorry if this question is asked elsewhere, but I havent run
across it yet.

Long ago, you made a request about fanfic, saying something along the
lines of asking us not to do any fanfic until after the 5th season had
ended its tv run, but that we could feel free after that.

Basically, I'm asking you now if we have your permission to "play" with
your characters in B5 fanfic? I just wouldn't feel right doing it if
you said no.

Thanks!

I can't give permission because WB owns the rights to those characters, not me.
And I think they would still view it as a form of copyright infringement.

Hi,

I believe JMS has been against it and still is.

Some good reasons are:
1) The characters are owned by WB.

2) You are using the intellectual property of other people
without compensation. Let's face it, you wouldn't write
about a Minbari named Delenn if JMS et al hadn't busted their
humps for over 10 years to make B5.

3) It just isn't right without everyone buying off. Even if
JMS and Bruce Boxleitner don't OWN John Sheridan, for example,
I expect it would still feel 'odd' (for want of a better word)
to see Shreridan used by a third party (JMS because he created
Sheridan, Bruce because the reader is going to 'see' and 'hear'
Bruce as Sheridan).

I've created original work and and seen others take it in directions
I never intended without my permission. It didn't feel good.

If you really like B5 and JMS, you won't create fanfic, as much
as you'd like to see more of the B5 universe (such as JMS's
latest teases about the ending of several characters), there
should be other channels to encourage JMS to allow the rest of
us to see a bit more of that universe that's already mapped out
1,000 years of either side of B5.

Besides, if your story is really good, it should stand on its own,
with YOUR characters, not someone elses. Use what JMS has shown
about how to write, but write YOUR stuff, not a reflection of
someone else.

If I ever wrote a fanfic for the B5 universe, I'd do something wacky, like a
vorlon love story, or a story in the history of Narn. I don't like fiddling
with characters I've actually seen, since I don't think I'd be able to get
them right. Of course, you can semi-legally make copies of things that are
copywritten as long as you don't do it for a profit.
Semi-quasi-diet-coke-of-legally. One calorie, not legal enough.

Anyway, I never considered writing a B5 fanfic until I wrote the words
"vorlon love story." Now I think I have to do that one out of principle.

You insegrevious poltroon; when you learn the difference between
"copyright" and "copywrite," and pass your bar exam and specialize
in intellectual property law, *THEN* get back to us with your
pronunciamentos concerning "legality," but be DANG sure you provide
specific citations with your little "informative" fabrications.

Making copies is PUBLISHING, and if you do it in the absence of
contracted authorization, you are engaging in felony copyright
violation. It's that simple.

In other words, you realize it's illegal, and are backing up and
contradicting what you asserted in the previous line, but trying
to hang on to the fringes of your original addlepated assertion.
Why did you even bother to post this? Needed to see your name
in the postings list?

I'd strongly suggest that you write your own fiction set in your
own universe; you're not bright enough to contribute anything
worthwhile to anyone else's work, and your ignorance of basic
legal concept is likely to place you in an actionably vulnerable
state, to no good effect, since the "fanfic" you perpetrate won't
be worth reading anyway; you're insufficiently evolved to be
worth reading.

I am the very model of a fervent Babylonian,
And all who mention Trek to me face punishments draconian.
I'll list you Londo's wives as quickly as the lawyers mount a suit,
And tell you what Kosh looks like when deprived of his encounter suit.
I'm very well acquainted too with shadows and their geometry,
(Which I have calculated with the help of trigonometry)
I dream of the Centauri, both their glories and their failure,
And sometimes wish I too could have prehensile genitalia.
I'll tell you in great detail why conditions Down Below are bad,
And sneer in scorn at those who think an arc's the ship that Noah had;
In short I am a true fan, not a pseudo- or a phoney 'un,
The image and the model of a fervent Babylonian...

(No. Stop it. Put it *down*. I don't do that kinda stuff any more...)

Hey, it's even got more-than-halfway-decent scansion.

"...which I have calculated with the help of trigonometry."

Tom,
BRAVO,
I enjoyed singing "in my head" your Babylonian version of "I am the very
model of a modern Major-General" and came very close to singing it
outloud and annoying my co-workers. Now I have it repeating itself in my
brain.
