Hello,
I was wondering if anyone knew a source for purchasing Amazing Stories,
vol.71 and 72, or #s599 and 602, the two mags with the Marcus and G'kar and
Lyta stories? I contacted Wizards of the Coast (they're were unfortunately
about useless..) and they thought they were out of printed copies and had no
idea where I could get any? Someone suggested ebay but there's none there.
Heck I couldn't even get a subscription for AS from Wizards...does anyone
know where I can get them? I wanna read those stories...hrrmmmmmmm, I want
more B5 ;)
TIA

Write to Steve Saffel at Del Rey !!!

http://www.randomhouse.com/delrey/editor/bio_sws.html

and request that they produce a bound version of all the B5 short stories!
See below as an examples:

Snail-Mailed to Steve Saffel at Del Rey via email, 01/20/2001:

Del Rey Books
Steve Saffel, Senior Editor

Dear Sir:
Several Babylon 5 short stories were published in Babylon 5 Magazine and
Amazing Stories Magazine. With the demise of both magazines, the fans,
especially the new fans that have come onboard since the reruns of Babylon 5
started on the Sci-Fi Channel, can't find the stories. On the Internet
newsgroup "rec.arts.sf.tv.babylon5.moderated", the longtime fans are
fielding questions from new fans, whose answers are contained in the short
stories. Now, I and some of the other longtime fans, have all the short
stories, but we are very reluctant to loan out our only copies of the short
stories (because you never get 'em back). The new fans would like to buy
the stories, but since both magazines are now defunct, reprints are not
available.

Because of this, I asked Joe Stracsynski (JMS):
"With the demise on Babylon 5 Magazine and Amazing Stories, wouldn't it make
sense if all the Babylon 5 short stories, that were published in both
magazines, could be put in ONE book, that could be sold to the fans?

We fans, who have our own copies, are very reluctant to loan out our only
copies, and we can't send scans or Xerox copies for obvious copyright
reasons. If a collection could be sold at a place like Scripts on the Lot,
or the fan club (if and when it ever gets resurrected), that would be a
great help."

He responded:
We've mentioned it to Del Rey, but they haven't done anything about it.

Why??? There is demand. Don't you want to SELL product?

Then someone else asked:
Is there enough word count to make a volume? My gut feeling would be
that a little more would be desirable (for more than one reason).

And JMS answered:
You'd probably need another 3-4 stories to fill it out. Anne McCaffrey was
open to doing one, so was Neil Gaiman, and I'd probably do at least one
more.

Given that there is demand for this Babylon 5 fiction, and there is NO
SUPPLY, it would seem that the smart thing to do would be for Del Rey to
come out with all the existing Babylon 5 short stories, and three to four
new ones in one volume, to sell to the fans. Do you know how starved we
are for good science fiction? Hell, Sci-Fi is putting on utter garbage like
Battlestar Galactica, Black Scorpion and Lexx. Something's got to
counteract this disgusting trend! If new stories were included, ALL the
fans, myself included, would buy the new volume of short stories. I
personally know 20 fans locally that would buy it. We longtime fans are
getting new fans turned on to Babylon 5. They're watching the reruns on
Sci-Fi. I gave several complete sets of B5 Books #7, #9, "In The
Beginning", and the Psi Corps and Centauri Prime trilogies out as Christmas
presents just to expose more people to Babylon 5. That's nine books each,
that I gave out. These nine books represent what I consider to be the core
set of Babylon 5 books (see attached list of B5 Books and Short Stories). I
even donated a complete set to the local library, and they've put them in
their circulating collection.
By the way, guess where I had to go for Babylon 5 Book #9? England! I had
to order it from Amazon UK, because NOBODY had any here in the USA! I
couldn't even find Book #7 at Amazon UK. I had to get the copies of Book #7
used, because no new copies were available anywhere. Amazon US didn't have
it. Neither did Waldenbooks, Barnes & Noble, Borders, or B. Dalton
Booksellers. Again, there is demand but no SUPPLY. Hint. Hint.
Another good thing to publish would be the Official B5 Chronology that was
in Babylon 5 magazine (#18 Jan. 2000, #19, Feb. 2000, #20 Mar. 2000, #21
Apr. 2000, #22 May 2000, #23 July 2000, & #24 Aug. 2000).
Well, now we're all anxiously awaiting the first Technomage book. Lets hope
it comes out with some point-of-sale displays to advertise it's presence in
the bookstores.

Sincerely,
Mac Breck

Emailed to Steve Saffel ar Del Rey, 03/05/2001:

1. Why has there been no PR for the Babylon 5 Trilogies? There's no
advertising, no in-store displays, nothing. Were it not for the
word-of-mouth in the Internet Newsgroup: rec.arts.sf.tv.babylon5.moderated,
I would not even know the trilogies existed.

It is this some new approach to selling books, by keeping them a secret?
This seems to be the approach that a lot of bookstores take, by having the
Babylon 5 books buried on some back shelf spine-on, and never on display
face-on.

2. Del Rey should come out with all the previously published Babylon 5 short
stories (from Amazing Stories Magazine and Babylon 5/Crusade Magazine), plus
three to four new ones, in book form. Currently these magazines are out of
business, and the stories are not available ANYWHERE. Fans on the
rec.arts.sf.tv.babylon5.moderated newsgroup have repeatedly asked for the
stories, but there is simply no place to buy them.

Did the Amazing Stories Magazine website get taken down? I had it
bookmarked on my old computer last year, but couldn't find it searching just
now. They used to offer back issues for sale there.

It looks like it's still up, but I thought they were Out of Business. I was
a subscriber (so I wouldn't miss any of their B5 stories), and they sent me
a refund check on 01/23/2001.
