Heads up for anyone who gets Univeral HD: They will be running all of
the episodes of the alien invasion saga, "Threshold" starting at 6 AM
(ET) on Monday. At 7 PM they cycle back around to the pilot and run
the whole show again, so folks should have two shots at watching or
recording all the completed shows in HD. (Assuming your DVR has that
kind of HD capacity. <g>)

Later,

Joe

Thanks for the heads-up. But why would anyone want to re-watch or
record it? Unless I'm very much mistaken and misremember (which is quite
possible :) , isn't this one of the "bimbo plays scientist" incredulous
scenarios? Like (not exhaustive, just popped up) "Mega shark vs Giant
octopus", or "Surface"?

More seriously, I thought this was a pretty good show; no bimbo in sight.
Unless you have an issue with any attractive female (Carlo Gugino in this
case) also potentially being smart and educated? The main reason I wouldn't
re-watch it is that I have no desire to re-experience the frustration I
suffered when it was cancelled mid-storyline.

Same here. Unlike Firefly which I can enjoy as-is, Threshold's story
is very much incomplete and thus to me unrewatchable.

Obviously the octopus. Ask any marine biologist. They'll all tell
you that phylum *mollusca* is just a bunch of sluts. <g>

The problem sometimes expressed as "bimbo plays scientist" is when a
smart well-educated female character (whose accomplishments would
require that she be at least 40) is turned into a 21-year-old blonde sex
object in an atttempt to sell more tickets. It's an actress chosen for
her bra size playing what should be a strong intellegent female
character. Consider Delenn played by a 20-year-old buxom starlet who
has trouble pronouncing hard words to get the full effect.

Also a decent turn by Brent Spiner as I recall. I liked it, there were
some minor nits, but it was getting interesting, right around the
point where the network cancelled it.

Yes, Jon got my feelings right - this is exactly the effect.
However, it is not limited to 20-somethings. There are people (men and
women) that can't become smart and educated (or don't convey that
impression when playing one).

>
> Carla Gugino was not a 20-something when that show aired (nor blonde). She

My memory (which I admit might be wrong), is that she was
unsuccessful in convincing me that her character was a smart woman. It
is not enough to say smart things - you have to do it in a convincing
manner. While it is true, that some really smart people don't sound and
look convincingly smart, an actor must do it, if they want to play such
a character. Examples of convincingly smart plus pretty - Jodie Foster
in Contact; unconvincingly smart - Gillian Anderson as Scully in the
X-files.

While this has been true in more shows than I'd like to think about . I
don't think it was true in this case. Carla Guigino is not 21 (nor was she
at the time Threshold aired, and she's a brunette. Being female and
attractive doesn't automatically make a character a bimbo.

even better when she's a 21-year old blonde sex object with a brain to
match her bra size cause she's a prodigy. :^)

Which reminds me of a question I was thinking of the other day...

Which series do you feel could most do with a film to finish it off...

Show that have already had a film, etc, to finish off or had enough
notice to wrap up story lines (even if badly) don't count...

Rather which show that was left hanging would you most like to see a
resolution for?

I'd most like to see a resolution of "Brimstone" and "Crusade," but one
film would not be sufficient to do it.

"Crusade" and "Odyssey 5" are probably the only two shows I'm interested
in that need resolution. I'm much more interested in "resolution" of
the Shadow influence/technomage/etc. side of "Crusade" than of the
plague plotline.

While "Odyssey 5" at least did get a full season, it ended on a
cliff-hanger, which is annoying.

There are other TV shows I'd like to see more of, but not for any plot
resolution (it's just 'cause I want more!).

Oops, I forgot "The Agency" which also ended on a cliffhanger, IIRC.

Which would those be?

For me thay'd be:
Strange Luck
Special Unit 2
The Tick (live action)
Keen Eddie
Peacemakers
Boomtown
Wonderfalls
....and of course, I'd love to see more episodes of "Brimstone" and
"Crusade."

The DVD commentary had an explanation of where the story was going.
Frankly, it was getting really hokey and I doubt it would have kept my
interest much longer.

There's always the B5 "universe" (not necessarily more of existing shows
but more in the same setting).

I enjoyed "Dead Like Me" and the direct-to-DVD movie (which was a little
different, but still good).

"The IT Crowd" (I think there's more coming, so yay!)

"Duckman"
"Dilbert"
"Mystery Science Theater 3000" (I know there are web versions)

I'm sure there are more, I'm just not remembering them right now.

One I'd LOVE to see come back is "The Chamber of Commerce of Wildside"
(or just Wildside). That was WONDERFUL!
