I also can't help noticing that Mira Furlan looks much younger and more
attractive in real-life pictures than as Delenn. Whatever the makeup
was, it worked against her in a big way. I really wish the makeup crew
had let her keep more of her real face -- they had that option after the
transformation. (For what's it's worth, I actually think Delenn looked
better as a Minbari than as a hybrid. The alienness of Minbari makeup
somehow sharpened her features and worked to her advantage. But the
hybrid makeup just makes her look like a plain and tired human.)
Well, that's *half* right. The post-transformation makeup took longer, but
*not* because it covered more of her face - which it clearly doesn't. The
problem was her hair and the new bone appliance, which were much trickier to
deal with than the "bald wig" and larger bone crest used during the first
season. The season two-through-five maekup was subtler and more delicate,
and therefore took more time to apply. (Similarly the "background" aliens
could get by with full-head rubber masks that went on in minutes while those
seen in close-up, and especially those who spoke, required much more subtle
and carefully blended foam latex and other pieces that took hours to apply.)

Joe
Yes and no.
Yes, it took longer.
No, it didn't cover more of her face (whoever told you that needs to get
their eyes checked)
It took longer because they were trying to blend the bits they DID use
smoothly onto her face so they didn't show the join. It's a lot quicker when
you're using a lot of latex because you can hide the joins under hair. When
the exposed ends are on skin in full view of the camera, you have to work
harder to cover them.
I have to say I've seen Mira, Peter and Andreas in full makeup from two feet
away and you really couldn't see where the makeup ended and the prosthetics
began. I was very impressed.

See above.

Depends on the episode, I think. She looked stunning in Revelations (the
first time we see her as the new, improved version), but as things
progressed her character was under a lot of pressure. It makes sense she'd
look tired when things aren't going well. So do the others!

I just had the pleasure of seeing Mira at a con last month and she answered
a question about this. Her comment was that the smaller pieces took longer
to make sure that they blended well and didn't look like they were just
stuck on. Therefore, her time in the makeup chair was longer than
Andreas's. She didn't say that it covered more of her face than the
eariler, pre-chrysalis makeup. She did mention, however, that the bone
crest was a pain, too. The crest kept making her hair go flat, and she
kept having to be "boofed". =) And I certainly agree that she is a
stunning woman in person and that the makeup that she had to endure was, as
she said, "not good for her ego."
That seems to be a matter of individual perception. When I first saw
"Revelations", I saw her as a Minbari who'd been horribly disfigured.
Later on, my opinion changed, and only by a conscious act of memory can
I now recover my earlier feelings, but that's how it was at the time.
Perhaps only those who see the show in the original order and have no
idea of what's coming out of the chrysalis, and only some of them, can
feel that way.

That sounds really cool. I thought I was on the lookout for conferences
recently, but didn't see anything. (Could be I started looking too
late.) If I might ask, which con was this and how did you find out?

It was *very* cool! The convention was in Kansas City... Slanted Fedora is the
name of the company and they do cons throughout the U.S. midwest. Dave (Mr.
Slanted Fedora himself) says that he's committed to getting B5 guests for every
con. Last year in KC he had Claudia, Stephen Furst and Wortham (Bob) Krimmer.
And he mentioned that he's been in contact recently with Peter Jurasik, too.
Let me know if there's anything else you'd like to know.

Post-transformation Delenn had a smile one would climb through a mile
of rock to see again. She also looked pretty good when she wasn't smiling.

BTW Lucy Lawless meets the same description. Imagine seeing both of
them smiling at you. The slightly taller one is Lucy.
Well, I'm the one who said she looked good as a full Minbari... Not
even sure what I meant anymore... I guess that was the look I first
fell in love with, and I was still getting over the transition -- but
I'm used to it now. Anyhow, I've never disputed that Mira looks her
very best with her real human face. And when the hybrid Delenn has
bangs, she looks almost exactly like Mira, because you can't tell that
the eyebrows are gone. But with hair swept away from her face, the look
is really severe. Yes, I know what you're thinking -- her forehead as a
Minbari is lots bigger and more severe. But when you enter that
fictional universe where you actually *believe* there is a whole race of
bald people with big headbones -- then you begin to think of that as
quite normal, and you don't notice the big forehead so much, and instead
you see the rest of her face. Like Londo says in Parliament of Dreams,
she was really cute *for a Minbari*.
Anyhow, Delenn *does* smile a few times pre-chrysalis, and her smile is
stunning. My favorite is when Franklins tells her that he refused to
hand over his notes during the war. She gives him that amazing smile as
she says "Thank you." Now there is a line that would've been almost
impossible to get right. It seems to me that no matter how you say it,
it's always going to sound sarcastic given the context. But Mira made
it totally sincere and beautiful. The look of openness and warmth on
her face at that moment -- a look so unusual for the 1st season Delenn
-- is totally surreal. We also see her smile like that with Shaal Mayan
and with Draal. It's true that these moments are rare in the 1st
season, but they glow just as much as they do after the change.

Well there was no sarcasm intended from me. BTW, is it my imagination, or
does the pre-chrysalis makeup in 'In the Beginning' look 'smoother' somehow?
Also, Mira was one of the few who could actually pull off looking younger.

I'll agree with you about the smile. I think Zhaan in Farscape can
sometimes be similiar to pre-chrsalis Delenn, very serene.
