It?s been a while, I know...but things have been awfully crazed at
this end of the modem.

I was there for the premiere of Changeling (no the name isn?t going to
change) at Cannes, and it was, overall, perhaps the most surreal
experience of my life. I was ensconced at the Hotel du Cap
overlooking the French Riviera, just abaft from Clint Eastwood and
Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt and Mick Jagger (who came to dinner with
the bunch of us that Friday) and surrounded by sights I could never
have imagined myself seeing. Day-trip drives into the South of France
for shopping, into Monaco and Monte Carlo where I dropped five hundred
Euros at the casino because, well, you pretty much have to...and the
premiere.

Imagine for a moment: a procession of twenty one cars preceded and
followed by French police running lights and sirens to get the
motorcade through the streets of Cannes en route to the press
conference and, several hours later, the premiere. A sea of popping
flashbulbs. Paparazzi and TV cameras and microphones, reporters from
all over the world, and everyone shouting questions, to look this way
or that way. The red carpet, long and broad as the ocean. The
theater, three thousand seats filled with tuxedoes and gowns and
stars. Smiles and tears at the right moments as the film rolled by.
A ten minute standing ovation. Proclamations and prophecies of
Oscars.

Surreal. Dream-like. Impossible. Was any of this really happening?
To me?

Impossible. But there it was.

Then: after more days of interviews and press and screenings and
stunningly positive, glowing reviews, on to Berlin, where my script
for Ninja Assassin was being filmed. Brilliant stunt work. Dinners
in the cool German evening. Then off again to London for meetings
with several production companies regarding TV projects, and a meeting
with director Paul Greengrass on They Marched Into Sunlight, for Tom
Hanks? company, before flying back to LA for four days of massive
jetlag.

Never give up, folks. Never stop trying. Never surrender dreams.

Because sometimes they come true.

Two asides before I crash.

First, on the plane ride home, I?d picked up the July issue of T3
Magazine, which contained in the mylar packet a subsidiary slim issue
about future tech and jargon and looked ahead to gadgets yet to come.
I meant to take it with me off the plane for research on another
project, but left it behind and it doesn?t seem to be available
anywhere here; I may have missed the issue. Point being, could one of
our UK friends scan that magazine (it was only like 20 pages) and
upload it to me? If you do volunteer, could you note it here first to
avoid lots of folks duplicating the efforts? Accept my thanks in
advance.

Second, keep an eye out for Daily Variety on June 19th. Another
surprise yet to come.

This is the dream. This is the fairy tale we all expect but so rarely
get. I am at peace. Go figure.

Wow -- it all sounds _amazing_, Joe. And I'm going to ask the question that
I know is on everybody's mind, but they're just too shy to ask: how were Mick
Jagger's table manners?

My guess? Fastidious. :-)

Two so far, Wes:

06/19/08... TV Series... Ranger Elenopa
06/19/08... D2DVD movie... Grandpa Garibaldi

Which leaves plenty of possibilities for people to take. Over in the Skywatch,
thread, though, please.

I am just very glad for you jms,, this is Connie here, don't know if
you will remember me. In any case, it must have been an amazing
experience, and of course all of us B5'ers knew it all along. I will
always love B5 more than anything and I am sure it will always be
close to the top in your heart too. I wonder what all of the
celebrities are like? It would be great if you get nominated, and I
hope you will, will look forward to seeing the film when it comes out.
I am glad your talent is finally being recognized by the other sectors
of show biz. Please keep us all informed... you will always have my
love and loyalty.

I looked for images of Joe on wireimages.com from the Cannes events
for Changeling and they only had two with Joe in it out of about 2,000
photos. I don't think Joe has to worry about any Paparazzi staking
out his house anytime soon.

I checked with Barnes & Nobles (in South-Eastern New Jersey) and
though they don't carry single issues on their website they do carry
it on their newsstand in the stores. Unfortunately the two near me
are sold out of the July issue (near being a relative term in that
they are both more than 45 miles away). I am more than willing to
track down a copy near you. To do that I need a zip code to center
the search around.

"My Famous Left Ear", the autobiography of J. Michael Straczynski. Read how part
of this respected writer became the darling of the tabloid photographers
everywhere as it accompanied the rich, the famous, the notorious to the
premieres of the films that he wrote.

I found the words "I am at peace" to be most noteworthy out of all you
said. I'm really glad you're feeling at peace. I'm wondering if you'll
find it useful, when you have the chance, to ponder what it is that's
making you feel at peace.

You've always had the talent and the ability, and the laws of long-

that's the case. There's nothing surprising about the fact that you've
achieved what you have.

JMS is listed as one of the "Ten Screenwriters to Watch" in Variety.

Projects listed are:

Way to go, JMS.

Way to go, indeed. I think the most interesting item in that list is
the confirmation that JMS will be writing "Lensman" for Ron Howard. I
thought that was pretty much a given after Howard acquired the rights
- who *else* was he going to ask to write it? (And that's without
even considering what JMS might have done to him had he been foolish
enough to offer it to any other writer. <veg>)

I wonder if it helped that JMS had a blurb on the back of one of the Lensmen books when Old Earth
Books rereleased them in 1996. I hope they manage to keep the Anachronistic feel of forties values
and high tech. That and they had better find a good looking red head to play nurse Clarrissa
MacDougall.

I'd say it is far more likely that Ron Howard and JMS discussed their
mutual fondness for "Lensman" and its influence on "B5" while working
on "Changeling" than that Howard ever saw, much less rememberd, a
blurb on an obscure reprint of the books. Writing a solid script for
"Changeling" and producing an SF series that told an epic story of war
and peace and the influence of ancient races on the younger ones
probably had more to do with the offer. <g> (Given the timing,
post-"Changling" sale, I wonder if Howard only acquired the rights to
the books because he knew he had the perfect writer to adapt them in
JMS.)

> That and they had better find a good looking red head to play nurse Clarrissa MacDougall

Well, there's no law that says whoever plays Chris has to be a
*natural* redhead - even Lucy wasn't, after all. But if that's the
direction they decide to go in, I nominate Kate Mara.

Obviously I'm getting old. If they were making this film a few years
ago it would have been easy for me to rattle off the names actress who
would have been good for the part between, say, 1975 and 2000. But it
is hard for me to come up with redheaded actresses who could carry off
the part who are also 20-somethings. At the right age Melinda Clarke,
Julianne Moore, Dana Delany and our own Pat Tallman all might have
been good in the part. (Not to mention Jodie Foster and Kirsten
Dunst, both of whom look good when dyed to a proper shade of red.)
Nowadays I'm not so sure, because I'm not in the target demographic of
the kind of TV show that would feature good-looking redheads. OK,
that and I feel like some kind of pervert looking at women under 35,
since my two nieces are now approaching 30. <g>

Even April Bowlby from "Two and a Half Men" is already 30. And while
she clearly has it in the looks department, and is actually very funny
on the show, I've only seen her in the one role - where she plays the
ultimate Beverly Hills airhead. I have hopes for her, though, because
she looks perfectly normal and lovely in her off-screen photos...

...while perpetually affecting a wide-eyed "deer in the headlights"
look when playing Kandi.

http://tinyurl.com/6k7d4q

http://tinyurl.com/5eqwyu

I figure if she change her face that much, she can probably act.
(Besides, you've generally got to be fairly smart to play extremely
dumb on film.)
