I disagree. I think Galen is a wound-up Techno-maige with lots of
repressed emotional baggage, not to mention a superiority complex
that most Techno-maige's have. Woodward imparts that attitude very
nicely.
LOL! On a mailing list I belong to I just said something similar. I thought
that if I had long exposure to this guy, I might be tempted to slap him around
a little.
A little bit of Galen goes a long way, IMO.

No, you're not the only one. I liked Galen at first, but he's getting on my
nerves too with his twee manner of speech and his snotty treatment of the other
crew members. He needs some kind of comeuppance and a dose of humility if he's
going to be a tolerable character over the long run (not, alas, that it appears
likely CRUSADE is going to *have* a long run, though we can still hope).
Personally, I would like to see more development of the Eilerson character, and
maybe even a sense that the fact he has personal profit in mind from his
explorations in space doesn't make him either a fool or a scumbag.

Those last three words are all that registered on my retina "screenful
of Galen". Can I have that screenful of Galen 24-7? Thank you very much.

What I see, and this could be just me too, but it almost seems that they are
trying to make Galen out to be a "Kosh-type" character.
I mean, all the questions in the opening credits are purely Vorlon. And as we
all know, Galen asked those questions of Gideon at the end of the first
episode. So what we have here is a Kosh-Wannabe.

You aren't. I find Woodward overacts in every scene. I have to assume
this is the direction he has been given and it isn't very good.

I really like Galen. My take on it is that Galen (the character)
intentionally overacts... and that it's part of being a larger-than-life
technomage.
Heck, I'd be a technomage if I could! I'd love to give my users cryptic
answers cloaked in wizardly unassailable credibility. Hey, Joe, if you
were to sell technomage robes with the appropriate appointments (inside
pockets for cellphone, pager, PalmPilot, set of screwdrivers, cables,
spare parts, etc.) I'd be first in line to buy one! ;)
Hey, if I wanted to be a technomage, would I have to shave my head?

I wouldn't be suprised if a lot of the time the other characters feels that
way as well. Remember JMS said that as he had planned for the shows to air,
Galen was going to be there, then go away for a while, then come back. I'm
sure the other characters would also like to slap him around occasionally if
they could figure out how to keep from having their email accounts put on
every spamlist there is :) A little 'I know soooo much about the universe...
just trust me... and bring me a fig newton, there's a good boy' goes a long
way with _anyone_ (Remember... just because a character has annoying
attributes doesn't mean those attributes are being misrepresented :)

True, the ship's councelor he ain't. I'd still love to BE him, though.

This reminds me of all the people who called Sinclair "wooden" and blamed
it on the actor. In real life, many people are wooden, some are shy, some
don't ever go into hysterics or emote strongly in any visible way. I
don't even think these people are a small minority. Yet, all the
characters we see on TV are the type who wear their every reaction and
emotion on their face, and so if someone tries to portray a different type
of character, we think the acting is bad--okay sometimes it is bad
acting. But in the case of Sinclair and now Galen, I don't think so.
In the case of Galen, think of a hyper geeky person with super powers and
the worst of the Celtic wannabe complexes that so many gamers and fen
have. That's Galen.
He's a very realistically portrayed character considering his background.
The only difference between him and some of the more annoying
con/fan/role-playing/fantasy types I have met, is that the latter don't
have super powers. Don't mistake this for a blanket condemnation of
people with those interests. I'm a role player myself. What I'm saying
is that Galen isn't that different from people at the extreme end of the
annoying spectrum within that category of people.
As such, I think it is an excellently brave portrayal of the character and
there is nothing to criticise in the acting. In fact, I would expect the
portrayal of this type of unusual character to be more than usually
challenging.
A friend will help you move; a real friend will help you move a body.
The one and only time I saw Michael O'Hare, he was anything but wooden
in person... if he's anything like that normally, then I'd say it took
a lot of work to act "woodenly;" although it never seemed wooden to
me--more... reserved, controlled--you know, things you'd want a CO of
a diplomatic post to be.

I found last weeks episode "The Rules of the Game" to be interesting
because it actually allowed us to see a character for once. In this
case it made Max a more interesting character and less cartooned.

He's not that large. He just has more secrets than most humans.
