Someone in the UK sent me a copy via e-mail of jms' interview in
Dreamwatch #58 (this issue is only available inthe UK right now). If
you would like me to forward it to you, please e-mail me. It's pretty
interesting!

Wow--I have gotten quite a response to my offer of the Dreamwatch #58
article! Are you angry enough now to help jms get his revenge on TNT?
I was certainly angry enough! The networks need to realize that viewers
are tired of being treated like a bunch of idiots! So I hope you will
help out--you can't change TV unless you speak out!

It is, by the way, a very good and well informed article.

What makes you think they care what 'we' think? The other 'we' the
ones that watch wrestling and babewatch and jerry springer don't seem
to be tired of being treated like a bunch of idiots. Unfortunately,
the suits arn't bright enough to figure out how to sell to the former
'we', so we don't get shows made for us.

Well, I'm listening.

What types of shows do you want?

Diane,

I'll keep this as brief as possible but it may run long. I've been
lurking this group for a short while, and have appreciated your input
to it.

I don't watch a ton of TV, but the shows that I have watched with any
regularity in the last several years are: ST:TNG, Bab 5, Frasier, The
Simpsons, Friends, and Win Ben Stein's Money. I occasionally watch ST:
Voy and DS9, but never caught on to them on a regular basis. I also
watch a fair amount of sports programming (primarily baseball and
football) and Sportscenter is the soundtrack to my morning
get-ready-for-work routine.

Today, in response to your post I have thought about, for the first
time, what these shows have in common for me. Off the top of my head,
here goes:
1) Sharp-witted characters (e.g. the Crane Boys, Chandler, Jimmy
Kimmel, Garibaldi, Ivanova). I enjoy the verbal digs and other
cleverness that these characters exhibit on a regular basis. When I
occasionally watch Voyager, the doctor is generally a hit with me,
too, for the same reasons. Come to think of it, many years ago I was a
Moonlighting regular, too.
2) Shows that play fair (and give you a chance to guess what's coming
before it happens). Bab 5 is the best example of this of the shows
that I have listed, and this probably explains my preference for
baseball and football over basketball and hockey. I can think about
what pitch I would have thrown or what play I would have run, and
compare to what the athletes and coaches decided. This is also a
source of frustration with the recent Trek shows, as many shows are
resolved by implementation of some new, un-hinted at clever idea,
rather than taking something we have seen before.
3) Humor. Straight dramas on TV don't really hold any interest for me.

So, What do I want? I guess a show featuring intelligent, sharp-witted
characters, some comedy, and that allows me to think right along with
the characters and see how I do.

Its probably no surprise that while I liked "War Zone" fairly well, I
really enjoyed "The Long Road". It met all my criteria. In fact, just
before the crucial moment, turned to my wife and said 'That's
hysterical. He's going to trick the stupid captain in to blowing up
his own mine."

Hope this was what you were looking for.
