No, this is pretty much par for the course for features, which is why I don't
generally work there. Unless you're a writer/director, every script for every
movie these days goes through diverse hands...writer a does the first draft,
they give it to writer b for additional material, it goes to writers c and d
for touch-ups, the director comes on, he has writer e do a few more tweaks...it
happens to all movie screenplays these days, even to William Goldman. I did
mine, now it's in the hopper. In features you have to learn to walk away from
it after you turn in your draft.

In publication order:
The Cardinal of the Kremlin
Without Remorse
Debt of Honor
Executive Orders
Rainbow Six - Ryanverse, but I don't remember whether or not this has Ryan
in it or not
The Bear and the Dragon
Red Rabbit - not yet published
??? - not yet published
So, it looks like they have 8 more books they could screw up, of which 6
have been released. And they'll have to *really* change the plotline of
Debt, Executive, and Dragon to have the younger person work -- he's the
frelling PotUS in those books!
Oh, and Clancy has said that early pre-production on movies of Without
Remorse and Rainbow 6 has begun, FYI. He expects them to finish with the
scripts soon.

I know there are Clancy fans who will be upset at the movie.
I've only read "Sum of all Fears" as I *rarely* read fiction outside
of SF. However, as a stand alone plot, I thoroughly enjoyed SoaF
this past week. Real butt-clenching-the-edge-of-the-seat tension!
Yes I knew Jack Ryan would save the world at the last minute, but
how they would pull it off in detail was worth the price of
admission. Morgan Freeman is always worth it. And, the new actress
was as good in her way as Anne Archer was in hers. And you'll have
noticed Clancy in the credits as Executive Producer? ;-)

"Colorado Ski Country, USA" Come often. Ski hard.
Spend *lots* of money. Then leave as quickly as you can.
The antagonist change I could live with, and the changes that flow from
that. I just don't like what they did to Ryan. It sorta screws up necessary
stuff down the line.

Except the whole no-family thing, instead of being married with two kids,
just totally threw me off. By doing that, along with the plot change
mentioned above, they pretty much established a separate Ryanmovieverse,
away from the books, whereas the earlier movies really didn't do anything
that blatantly different.

Yeah, I did. But (at least according to Clancy) he really didn't do
anything.
He may be mentioned but his role is minor at best. This book is about
Clark and Chavez.

Cardinal of the Kremlin is out. The Cold War elements are just too
out of date.
You're right that Debt, Orders, and Bear are almost impossible to do
with Affleck as Ryan.
Maybe they're going to take the character of Ryan and do movies that
aren't based on any books, sort of like James Bond is now.

Should be interesting. Without Remorse is a pretty heavy novel.
Wonder if they'll keep the Viet Nam era storyline?
I've read that this is the next one in the works.
