Caught this just by luck (aka bbc.co.uk, but this is from the LA Times).

I love Alien, but I'm very fond of Dark Star...

In article <hgn20s$pfe$1...@news.eternal-september.org>,

Oh, foo. :-(

I've never seen "Alien," but I, too, am very fond of "Dark Star."
(Ah, the good ol' days when the aliens on your spaceship were
merely amusing. :-))

Time to sing a round of "Benson, Arizona"...

I'm not sure luck is the word.

In the sense that the news might not have been received except by
fortune (note that there's no indication of good or bad given), it was luck.

Perhaps "by chance" would have the right connotative meaning.

Luck and fortune are bad words to use.

Because you only found the news by good luck/fortune but the death is
bad luck/fortune.

Better to use "by chance", "randomly" or less loaded word.

Technically you can argue your point, but popular usage and general
audience perception trump technical accuracy every time.

I'm also still not sold on the "fortune" (good or bad) of finding it.
If this story existed momentarily and you caught it before it was
deleted, sure. If you found it through some "pick random news story"
thing, maybe. If you found while specifically looking up Dan's name
and stumbled across the breaking news, I can see that.

But if it was found in a general trawl through news sites then it
isn't so much "luck" or "fortune" but rather is what happens when you
do that.

Yes, and that was covered in another post.
