Does anyone know if there is there a newsgroup alt.tv.smallville yet?
My newsserver doesn't list one.

I'm not seeing one listed by either AOL or Google.

I haven't checked alt.config lately, but I don't think anyone has
proposed alt.tv.smallville yet. Someone could have bypassed
alt.config and just gone ahead and newgrouped (again, I haven't
checked the registry at isc.org), but there'd be difficulty getting
it carried if they did that.

There is a "convention" some in alt.config, and some news admins
believe in, that a TV show should be renewed for a second season
before it gets a dedicated alt.tv.* group. There is no such "rule" and
there are exceptions. For example, I proposed and newgrouped
Dark Angel and Andromeda last year and they did get carried on
all major and many other ISPs fairly quickly. I didn't do that with
Smallville this year, for two main reasons. First, I wasn't as confident
the show would run at least two years. Andromeda had a commitment
for a two-year run, and Dark Angel had Cameron behind it. I was
personally virtually certain that those two shows were going to do very
well initially AND not suck.

After seeing Smallville tonight, I don't see any potential at all that
this series will suck. In fact I'll go out on a limb, just based on this,
that the series can run 5-to-7 years and even has the potential to
evolve into a Superman movie series. So I'd be willing to support
an alt.tv.smallville on that basis -- I'm quite certain this show will
be around for a long time.

The second reason stands though, which is that this group seems
ideal to use for Smallville discussion. To promote that possibility
I've crossposted to the other major groups where Smallville is
on-topic, but set follow-ups to here. Anyone looking for Smallville
discussion on Usenet would presumably find out about this group
through such crossposts, and gravitate here. This rec.arts.* group
has wide propagation now, whereas it would take time to get
that with an alt.tv.smallville.

That said, alt.tv.smallville is probably inevitable eventually, perhaps
sooner rather than later, and people do tend to look first in alt.tv.*
for a TV show newsgroup. So if there's a consensus here to propose
such a group now and get it going, I'd go along with that and even
send out the newgroup control message if necessary. There are a
few people in alt.config who'll scream like banshee owls, but the
group will ultimately get carried by users who ask for it, and this
group would still be here in the meantime.

I don't know about 5 to 7, but it'll be around for a couple seasons at
least.

Just my opinion.
