Does anyone know what happened to the shots of Luke jumping up and hanging
from the grating just after he's fallen into the Rancor-pit. I (and a
friend of mine who brought up the matter) remember having seen this scene in
the theatre but it's not in my letterboxed video (PAL-version) or in the
Pan&Scan version I rented (also PAL). Here's a quote from the storybook of
JEDI (the one by Joan D. Vinge with a picture of Luke holding up his
lightsaber on board Jabba's sail barge) describing the scene:
"... A Rancor, a hideous beast with knifelike teeth, was waiting in the pit.
The crowd of courtiers rushed to the edge of the pit to watch it attack
Luke. Luke leaped straight up as the Rancor came toward him, using his Jedi
training to catch hold of the pit's overhead grate. But the courtiers
smashed at his fingers until he fell down into the pit again. He landed in
the monster's eye. It bellowed with pain as Luke dropped to the floor. Luke
grabbed a bone as the Rancor caught hold of him and lifted him up to its
gaping jaws. Quickly he wedged the bone into the beast's mouth ..."
Below this text is a picture of Luke holding on to the grating.
The scenes isn't described in the shooting script from Jedi. Is it just
our imagination (and have we just read about this scene) or was this scene
really part of the initial cinema-release, and if so, are there any
videotapes / LD's which have this scene in it (preferably PAL of course,
since my T.V. doesn't support NTSC) ?
Any comments ?

I remember this scene too, but I don't think that I saw it. I believe
that I read it, but that was it. I don't think that it was ever included
in the movies.

If it's any help, there's a picture of it in the ROTJ storybook, which may
be where you saw it. I also remember it, from there, at least I think.

I've got a card with a picture of Luke hanging from the grating.
I remember opening the card pack and commenting about not
seeing that in the movie and wondering where it was from. I
later read it.

Nope. It was there, all right. I remember it quite clearly. Plus it
was in the trading cards. Maybe an obvious blooper caused Lucasfilm
to remove it in the hopes that no one would notice?

Nope, I remember it quite clearly. While it's more than possible that
my overtaxed brain is inventing it, I still stand by the claim. I saw
it a week after release in Tuscon, if that helps anyone. I'm waiting
for someone to print a synopsis of what _they_ remember so that I can
confirm or deny.

There's around 30 seconds of music on the track "Fight in the Dungeon" on
the new SW soundtrack box set that would correspond with this scene.
There's no room for it in the movie.

Well, for once I respond to a Lemming post....
I remember seeing Luke drop in the pit, land in a tuck-roll, and
shake himself together to get his wits. Through wonderful editting, we
see parts of the Rancor before we see the whole thing. Luke is
definately not sure what to do but escape. His only way out is the way
he came in, so he uses the Force to leap straight up to avoid the
grasping claws of the Rancor. We cut to an under shot of Luke hanging
and see the motly crew at Jabba's looking down, then we match cut to the
180 degree shot and see a foot/feet stomp on Luke's hands from an
over-head shot. Luke falls, and then we see him using the bone to jam the
Rancor's jaws. (Okay, I'm a film major...but I'ts how I remember it)
I don't remember exactly when, but I saw it at Karcher Mall in Caldwell,
ID within the first 4 months of release about 5 or six times. Quite a
few for a girl, don't ya think?

Oops, not even close to me. I may be imagining it after all...
Pray tell, do you remember _what,_ precisely, stepped on his foot?
Still looking for confirmation...

Well, Lem', I remember several somethings tryin gto get the_the Jedi_down
to the Rancor. The Style of foot that actually got Luke (if my blonde
memory is still intact) was a Gamorrean Guard (or something else like a
hippo/rhino/elephant-esque build.) I laughed because there was no way
anything or anyone would be able to hang on with THAT MUCH WEIGHT
stepping on their hands./

Well, if that foot's holding your hands against the bars, you might not have
much of a choice. =) Your hands might be 'impressed' by the strength of those
bars, though. =)
