The 'cross' wings fold down to meet the main wing and the cockpit
rotates so that the main wing is horizontal relative to the pilot
(cockpit is now on the extreme starboard end). Landing gear deploys
from the main engine pod, cockpit, and end laser pod.

Nope, in one of Anderson's novels (I think) a B-wing is "shown" flying
in the atmosphere of a planet (not too well, however :-)

Also, I believe in another of his novels, there are B-wings in hangars on
Coruscant.

On the B-Wing expansion disk the wings fold down, the body moves
90 degrees left, and the landing gear comes down from the sides.
If ya don't understand, buy B-Wing. It is a really sool game where
you can destroy the death star on historical combat!

I think that the wings fold. In fact, I know they do. They just fold up
and the thing lands. Ugly? I dunno, depends on your perspective, I think
it's really cool looking, not a cliche like the Y-wing's shape.

They're S-foils, just like the X-Wing.

Perhaps it's not ment to go trough a planets atmosphere, and just "park" in
space.

All the descriptions of the B-wing landing on it's side are right. I had the B-wing toy, and it had landing gear which came out of the side of the engine pod and the lower wing.
