"It looks like some new Star Wars films will be headed our way. Ima
hears that Kenneth Branagh is up for the key role of Obi-Wan Kenobi, the Jedi
Knight played by Alec Guinness in the originial Star Wars. The next three
films will revolve around Kenobi and Darth Vader in their formative years.
Maybe Yoda will come back from the dead."
This is available at your local Block Buster stores, so this is not
real TOP SECRET information or "hearsay." I personally feel that Branagh IS
the man for the job, espeacially that of Ben Kenobi. He is a brilliant actor
and most of all, he is British. This will probably be the big name on the
casting list, unless they get James Earl Jones to be Darth Vader's voice again.
I am interested in what people have to say about this. I will admit that I do
not know how Branagh will do in an action movie (the closest thing he has done
was "Dead Again"), however he is going to be in Francis FordCopula's
"Frankenstein" due out in September.
Rampage
Hey, that's Ken Branagh's version of "Mary Shelley's Frankenstein", due
out in November. :-)
I wouldn't think that's the most reliable source you could quote, but
I'm still looking for George Lucas saying "I have hired Kenneth Branagh to
play Obi-Wan Kenobi." I don't think you'll find much argument over the
statement that Branagh would be the best choice for Obi-Wan. The being
British isn't a big deal; Branagh's voice would never be mistaked for Sir
Alec's. Lucas will probably want unknowns again (yes, Harrison Ford was once
an unknown), but it's not like Kenneth Branagh is a big star in America. The
only problem I see is, would Branagh be willing to be tied down so completely
for two and a half solid years? He's under contract for "The Crucible", a
Shakespeare movie (probably "Othello"), and I think one other movie, not to
mention the stage roles he takes between films. All this noise about KB
playing Kenobi is nice to hear-it means a lot of people are considering this
possibility, maybe even ones that could implement it-but I fear it will come
to naught.

You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy...
We must be cautious...
He's getting close to the same age A.G. was when he did ANH, surely you jest.
Even Branagh is a stretch because he's pushing 40 now and I don't think
Ben is supposed to be 80 in ANH, maybe 70 at the oldest meaning Ben
starts out no older than 30 during the Clone Wars.
Wait a minute! I was the one who originally posted that Branagh would PROBABLY
be Obi-Wan. I feel that age is not a factor when dealing with the Star Wars
universe ,especially Jedis. Yoda lived to be an extremelly old little puppet,
so there is really no telling how old Obi-Wan was when we first met him in ANH.
I also do not know anything about Sir Anthony Hopkins being Obi-Wan, but he too
would be a good choice (despite his aged look). As long as he looks younger
than Alec Guiness, I am fine with it!
Since when is 33 (Branagh's age) considered to be "pushing 40"?
I can see where if the movies take five years to make, that Branagh's age
might be a problem. The whole question is moot anyway because I don't
think Branagh has time to sink on this film project.
Well, not really, He was like 25 or so. Not as bad as Ralph Macchio :)
Plus there was supposed to be years inbetween the films (especialy ANH
and ESB).
But someone pushing 40 can't look 20. The closest I've ever seen to this
working is when David Bowie had a flashback in Merry Christmas Mr.
Lawrence to when he was a senior in highschool or something. He was 37
at the time but before his chronic smoking started to really fill in his
hairline wrinkles so he could still pass himself off for 18!
What happens with child actors is it takes them a while to get an adult
role. Since producers look to the actors' previous work, if all they
have are kid roles that's what they will tend to want to cast them in.
With Hamill he had only kid roles in his portfolio.
Lucas himself said that the new trilogy would be about a YOUNG Ben
Kenobi, not a middle aged Kenobi. Now Branagh can do it, at least as
long as he doesn't age too badly in the next few years (the 38-42 years
are really bad ones as far as visible signs of aging) but no way can
Hopkins do it. Hopkins is an ex-alcoholic. He ravaged his body and now
he is paying the price with a face and body that is disintegrating
rapidly. When I saw an ET interview from 1981 I couldn't believe it was
the same man! He looked young, dashing and virile with dark hair. This
all changed in 13 years.
The live action in SW was shot in 1976, not 1977. Therefore he was 25, or
perhaps even 24 for part of the shooting.
Actually, the shooting started in 1975.

According to an interview I saw with CF this year, she was 19 when she did
ANH and 25 when she did ROTJ. Or they definitely said she was 25 for ROTJ.
Mark Hamill was born September 25, 1951. He was twenty-four or so when
the first movie was being filmed.
Carrie Fisher was born October 21, 1956. She was nineteen.
Harrison Ford was born July 13, 1942. He was thirty-four.
