That's a little like reading the introduction to a murder mystery and
deciding you know who did it. You might be right, but odds are pretty good
you haven't read enough to make that judgement.
> He was in Star Wars. Good for him. I'm happy, but at a certain point being

Apparently you feel he passed that point. I guess you missed the part where
he explains the reason behind asking the question more than once. He says it
was because he asked the question. Got a variety of responses, but no
answer, then they tapered off. He asked again with a repeat of results.
This went on until he got an answer. All the while having to fend off
people expressing an adverse opinion which seemed to be more an expression
of jealousy than being upset because he asked a question 5 times.
I see people everyday ask a question that is currently posted and answered
at the time they post. Should they be flamed for that?
Frankly I don't see the shameless self promotion.
I personally never gave his posts a second thought, because it wasn't a
subject I had anything to add to. Of course here people feel the need to
editorialize anything they don't like. I do it. Of course I try to make a
point and not just attack someone because the asked a question.
wes
I also can't believe some of you called him a British idiot. What's wrong
with you all? You'd have to be an idiot *not* to be proud of an achievement
like this, and want to find a quick answer.

Look, you didn't NEED to re-post that message so many times in a short
period. Wait a day, 2, 3, or 4. Let more people see it and
get back to you. Be PATIENT. When you started to get flack, what did
you do? You KEPT ON DOING IT! That provoked more flaming, and that's
how this got started.

But when you were "informed" that you were annoying frequent NG'ers
with your repeated requests you ignored them and kept re-posting.

You know what? You never even apologized for re-posting the same

you did it. I call that arrogant and rude myself.

we got upset at you for spamming.

HOW FUCKING PATHETIC!!!
Give me a break.
You think you can make yourself into some kind of martyr?
Do you think you can make US feel bad for flaming you

Not bloody likely.

Hard to ignore some pompous guy like you, brimming with self-importance,
and talking down to "the little people". Calling us jealous, telling us
"we just don't know how it is in the Film Industry", etc.

THIS? After playing the dramatic tragic hero? The one who
"had no friends"? The one who's soooooo sad and hurt by
3 or 4 people blasting you for posting the same message
on this NG over and over?
How could you think that posting
"I AM IN THE CREDITS, I AM IN THE FILM" could not
piss people off, after the way you've acted and
behaved like a spoiled arrogant git?

By the way, Congradulations. You have achieved immortality in film
history. You SHOULD be excited and proud of yourself.
I would be.
Just TRY TO SHOW SOME RESTRAINT NEXT TIME.
You may think that just because your website slowed
down some after the first few hours justified re-posting
the same message, but you didn't even give people the
chance to talk to you, then go see the movie, and then
get back to you. That's what you SHOULD have done.
You should learn to be more patient.
We ALL waited 16 years for this movie, what is 2 more
months anyways?
Ian
Man U for the Treble......
I still don't "get" why the UK release isn't until July!!!
I'd love to do something like that, but living on the east
coast,
being a single mommy type, I guess I'll just have to keep
going to the
movies, and wait for my son to grow up and be famous! LOL
I've only been once, and I would have looked for you, but
haven't had
time to go back again!
I'm glad you got your answer though!
May your Dreams all come true, may your career be glorious,
and may
the Force be with you!

That wasn't the only way. Nothing can prevent you from doing it,
though, and no one can say it's "illegal" or anything, but you can't
act all upset when someone tells you to stop spamming up a group. Tell
them you were trying to get noticed more, and leave it at that.
Instead, you resorted to petty insults and bickering. The people who
insulted you were just as much at fault, but they wouldn't have had
anything to continue the argument over if you'd shown some maturity
and just ignored them.

You read what he did and why he did it and you're still back to he shouldn't

He is one of the first to ask a question that no one seemed to have the

So if someone annoys someone else here and they are informed of it then they
should just stop? That would be great. Could all the people who are here
just posting crap they hate kindly stop? let's see how much goos that does.

A martyr? Other people make a martyr. They don't create themselves. Any
martyrdom you attribute to him his your own doing.

I still don't think he spammed the NG. Did he spam you personally? One of
your compatriots here?
Asking a question five times isn't spamming.
Spoken as a man who has no concept of why he asked and re-asked the
question.

Has he spammed you? How?
I didn't see anything he did here that counted as spamming. So I've
considered the possibility that he spammed those who flamed him. if so no
one has brought it up.
Just you and Ian insisting that he was spamming. Perhaps I missed it. I
don't read the posts as much as I used way back on Tuesday before everyone
who'd seen the movie showed up and started dumping on it.

Because it takes TIME for articles to propagate. Right now, it takes time
to read through the newsgroup--at least, it takes time to read RASSM, I
dunno what posting conditions are like on AFS right now.
But as of this morning I hadn't read RASSM since Friday a.m. There were
over 5000 messages waiting.
And a LOT of those were the traffic generated from this guy's five initial
posts. ALL of which showed up on my server TODAY. See what I mean about
propagation?
The suggestion that he wait a few days between queries is not
unreasonable.

From the look of it (and I didn't know the answer because I haven't seen
the movie yet, so I didn't bother to read the threads in question), he
annoyed more than someone. He annoyed many, many, many someones. And every
single time he posted, all of those people felt compelled to respond on
the NG about how pissed off they were.
Do you have any idea how long it takes for trn to run a killfile on 5000
articles?

Because whenever someone posts something to a Usenet newsgroup that a
large number of readers find inappopriate, and those readers complain, the
original poster always, without fail, comes up with this sort of thing as
a defense.
Clue: this is not news.balkans.kosovo.war . It's RASSM/AFS. People are
here to discuss Star Wars.
The Kosovo discussion is happening elsewhere.

Where is "here"?
I had to endure way more than five lines. I had to endure all the replies,
flamage, and general spates of bad temper those five lines elicited,
clogging up my newsfeed. And so did everyone else who hasn't seen the
movie yet and doesn't know the answer.
Nobody is arguing that someone can't ask a question. What people are
arguing is that it wastes people's time to ask the same question over and
over and over in a short period of time. The initial article didn't hit my
server until days after it was originally posted.

He posted multiple copies of the same material to Usenet. Fits the
definition to me.
Look, I'm not saying it's all his fault. Quite frankly, I think folks
should lighten up--of course this guy's excited.
At the same time, he should take a hint when dozens of people respond to
him with the same objection, y'know?

An article doesn't propogate. The time it takes to post is measured in
seconds.
Yes it does take time to read through all of the posts. he asked a
question. Recieved responses. Didn't get the one he was looking for.
Responses stopped. He repeated the cycle.
A lot of them? Out of 5000 messages how many in a lot of them?
personally if it had been me and I'd been in his situation I would have done
much what he did. The people who made his posting a problem wasn't him. it
was the people who decided to flame him. And then like lemmings everyone
else decided to get in on it. Anyone of you could have ignored him. I did.
Why? Because I didn't know the answer to the question he'd asked.
So how long did he wait between posts? he posted 5 times over the 3 or 4
days I believe. That makes him sound much more reasonable then the people
who flamed him each and everytime he posted or responded to a post.

AFS.
Why did yoou have to endure more than five lines? Because a number of
people flamed someone for asking a question about Star Wars.
but that is exactly what they are arguing. You can ask a question, but only
if a certain group of assholes decide it's validity. Once they revoke
validity or get tired of looking at they are saying that he can no longer
ask a question.
As to NG server time. Mine posts my posts within a minute and I get
responses within the next minute. Sometimes I won't see posts from someone I
used to see all the time and I can only read them when someoen else responds
to them. Your server is your problem. Not his.

He sent out the same question five times.
He sent it to the NG where anyone is free to look at it.
He did not send it to anyones e-mail. If he has then no one has told me and
I have asked. Maybe it will appear later in these posts. Until then he
didn't spam.
No one has to come here to read this. If posting something that someone
found annoying in an NG were spam then we could get a good number of people
TOS'd.
But it's not.

If dozens of people told me they didn't want to hear what I had to say then
I'd tell them too bad I'm doing it anyway. So if you don't want to see it
then kill file me or change the channel.
no one here has the right to make someone stop posting here. If we did then
there wouldn't be any trolls here, now would there?
wes
For you Chris, congratulations! I confess I thought it was a troll, but
kept on reading for fun. I think also that you was childish in the way
you expressed your fun but I respect and envy that, it's your way. I

Exactly, but this is something Wes cannot understand because he is
blind to how annoying he himself is:

Um. Not to be bitchy, but do you know what "propagation" means in this
context?
Sure, the time between when you post something and it shows up on your own
server is generally measurable in seconds.
As I mentioned earlier, this guy's original queries took a few days to
reach my server, where all five of them piled up, along with all of the
responses.

That's your right. I use one because it's either that or leave Usenet
entirely. I don't have time to wade through everything on every newsgroup
I read.
>Two: He was fighting back from being flamed and he got flamed for it...and
>so on....
Like I said--he's not entirely to blame, and I think the folks who flamed
him should lighten up.
But flamewars are an exercise in futility, in my experience. Sure, they
can be quite entertaining, and a great chance to practice creative
insults, but other than that they're pretty much a waste of time.

OK. You have a good server. Many people have slower servers, not just me.
This is why netiquette exists.

He sent it to more than one NG.

Spam refers to Usenet as well, not just e-mail.

Nobody MADE him stop. As you correctly pointed out, the only way to do
that is to complain to someone's ISP, and even then that doesn't always
work--I've run across few ISPs that will restrict or cancel someone's
account because two or three people complain.
But it works both ways. People have a right to complain to him, or to all
the newsgroups he posted to if they want, just as much as he has a right
to post his question.

I can understand when someone is being annoying, I just don't have to like
and/or support it. Like when some kid is saying "look at me, look at me, look
at me".

Explain what was obnoxious about him asking a question 5 times.
Explain what is obnoxious about me posting a few responses about how many
assholes turned an innocent question into a flame.
You know next to nothing about me. If you want to know anything, ask.

What is paranoid about that? I think you need to get a dictionary and look
these words up before you use them.

I'm still responding to people who are still voicing there opinion of him
days after he's gone. I wouldn't be writing this if you hadn't written it
and I hadn't seen it, but I did, so I am.

No. I understand how annoying I am. I simply don't give a shit. As long as
people make moronic statements and baseless criticisms I'll respond to each
one I see. Fortunately with all of the morons here now I don't have to spend
as much time reading these, because there aren't that many opinions here
worth reading.
You'll all be gone in a couple of days when the newness wears off and then
you'll go ont o your next hobby. probably bashing sacks of puppies or like
minded activity.
