Characterizations:

Jabba - creature of darkness that knows not of the light... he thrives in the
darkness and keeps himself in it

Bib Fortuna - born of darkness on Ryloth, he knows the darkness intimately;
however, he too knows the light. Working for Jabba, he has found comarderie
and something he never had - absolution by watching the guilt-less Hutt

Oola - born of darkness on Ryloth, she rejects the darkness and embraces the
light... her power comes from dancing, a pure innocence that can never be taken
away

From this perspective:

Fortuna knew the perfect gift to give his master. He knew of the
Twilekkian dance and how it was an act of pure innocence, something the Hutt
would not know and would be intrigued with. As an offering to the creature of
darkness to thank him for making him forget his sins, Bib Fortuna travelled out
to Ryloth to capture the light and to show it to the Hutt. In this way, he
knew the Hutt would be blinded by the light and not see into the darkness in
which Fortuna plotted and schemed. As one who looks into the light too long,
one could not focus in the darkness.

He brought "the light" into the palace for the first time. It was wrapped
in a plain brown cloak and was ignorant of the true nature of the darkness that
surrounded her. Fortuna knew that this light's ignorance would make it
vulnerable to the swaying of the dark shadow that had touched his soul. In
this, he had hoped to turn her to the darkness where his soul resided.

As Fortuna had anticipated, Jabba was enthralled by Oola. Jabba was
fascinated not only by her pleasing physical form but by her "glow", which was
brought out each time she danced. Jabba, knowing not of the light, watched
maleovantly and thought how to harness it.

But... the light fought back; something the Hutt and Fortuna never
anticipated. Oola resisted the darkness and fought against the Hutt with all
of her might. Every dance and every movement she captivated the attentions of
the dark denizens of the palace in such a way to disrupt the darkness in which
they resided and reminded them of the light in which they forgot in themselves.

She was the subject of the Hutt's mind games, which Jabba used to try to
turn her to the darkness. At first, she was chained; her freedom was taken
away to try to "dim" the light surrounding her. With each dance, her innocence
flourished irregardless of the fact that she was no longer free. Then, she was
humiliated by the Hutt's insistence that she wear skimpy clothing. In this,
Oola's true beauty and innocence was accentuated in each dance as she appeared
to glow unencumbered by the material clothing that had restricted her. Next,
she was tempted. If she accepted the darkness and Jabba's embrace, Jabba and
Bib Fortuna promised her riches that she had never known before. In this, Oola
resisted for her motto was "to lose one's honor is to lose one's reason for
living." Finally, she was tortured to make her lose hope. Though her
existence was made miserable, Oola found redemption in the fact that she could
bide her time to escape (perhaps, with Skywalker's help) or to die well and to
go to her reward where she would dance forever free of darkness.

In her final moments, she danced with perfect clarity of purpose and
conviction. She had achieved goodness through her cleansed, purified soul. She
had known darkness and had resisted its temptations. In her final dance, she
discovered her inner strength and danced the perfect dance. As Jabba pulled on
her chain to ruin her and turn her to darkness from hopelessness and fear, Oola
fought back. Her light fought his darkness.

Jabba pressed the button for a couple of reasons. First, she had tempted him
to turn to the light. Jabba knew only that he would turn weak in the eyes of
other creatures of darkness and could not accept weakness as a way of life.
Second, by staring at this "light" for so long, Jabba had lost his perception
in the darkness, as Fortuna had predicted. His solution was to get rid of it
before he became totally blind. However, unbeknownst to Jabba, Oola's
distraction had begun his downfall. He did not think about betrayers, Lando
and R2, in his midst. It also allowed him to fall again for a creature of
light, Princess Leia, whose inner strength and purity killed the Hutt in the
end.

Thus, Oola did serve a major purpose in the Star Wars trilogy. On a
symbollic level, she weakened the darkness enough for the light to destroy it
from within.
Because of this, she is the most beautiful creature in the galaxy. THE END

Wow. That should absolutely be placed on a website. Talk about really
analyzing a small part of the Star Wars trilogy! Very cool.

I think your essay went along well with the story of Oola in _TfJP_
because it used the theme of her honor and how she intended to keep it
even if she had to die.

Strong enough to that and yet not become consumed by it. Even Jedi have
to kill sometimes.
