Is it possible to calculate them????...

I know theat question may be stupid so let me explain -I've read that in some cases THERE IS a possibility to asses the absolute maximum efficiency of some devices e.g. some equations of Carnot make it such that solar cells cannot have efficiency greater than 86% or so...

I wonder if possibly similar "Absolute threshold" can be established for SF stuff like lasers or rockets (Any kind of the above including antimatter, fusion rockets, orion drive, black hole starship, Bussard ramjets etc))...

By "Total efficiency" I mean the ratio of what we get in the end to what we put at the very beginning.......

So can someone help...Or is my question inaccurate? If so then why?

PS. Sorry if my questions irritate you...I am contemplating writng some Hard SF story and I wish I could know things like that....So if you may help I'd be grateful...

Regards

Check the references and notes, too.
