Having a slight interest in Spanish, I enjoy hearing the Latino nuances
that Vasquez works into her dialogue. However, in the scene after the
Marines have got their 'asses kicked' in the Reactor Room, and Gorman has
been smacked on the back of the head with something falling from an
overhead locker, the dialogue goes like this:

VASQUEZ: <angrily to unconscious Gorman> "Wake up Pendejo, man I'm gonna
kill you!"

<HICKS blocks VAZQUEZ's blow that would've hit GORMAN>

HICKS: "Back off... right now."

The thing I want to know is, what does 'Pendejo' mean? I presume it's
some kind of swear word, since it ain't in any Spanish dictionary _I_
could find, and does seem to be used in that context. Interestingly
enough, it's also used in Predator 2 by the Latino Police officer (can't
remember her name) when some people cause some disturbance or something,
and she says "Pendejos!", under her breath. Any ideas? It's bothered me
for a while now.

It's one of those words I heard a lot whilst growing up in an area with
lots of mexicans (myself included). To be honest I can't give you a
definite translation as it seems to be one of those words that has a
different meaning depending on who you talk to. The most straightforward
translation seems to be "Asshole."

From what I've been told, pendejo has about the same insult level of
"asshole", but doesn't literally mean anus. It might mean someone who's wife
is sleeping around, and he knows but doesn't do anything about it, sort of
like a cuckold.

Actually, depending on th country you're in, it can take different
levels of meaning. The actual meaning (according to "El Peque#o
Larrouse Ilustrado" translated by yours truly) is:

PENDEJO: adj. & n. Coward | pop. Idiot, Stupid | n. Hair that grows on
the pubis and groin.

It generally has a stringer negative connotation than just "coward"
and "stupid" would give it, so much that when a prominent Venezuelan
used it to describe the majority of the populace (as in "most people
are pendejos who pay taxes instead of just stealing like the smart
people" (meant in a sarcastic way, of course)) the waves were felt for
months afterward.

(Is that enough off topic for this newsgroup?)

Pendejo means, literally, "pubic hair" and less literally "fool" or
"idiot" when used as a cuss word.

Yeah, I got some mail from someone who mentioned that when they were
growing up in a Mexican area, it's more literal translation was 'pubic
hair'. I'd always suspected that it meant, if you pardon the language,
'cunt'. It kinda seems to maybe be that. :)

I was watching T2 the other day and it clicked that Johns foster mother
is none other than Vasquez (Jeannette Goldstein)!

Yesterday in the UK on Channel 4 on a show called "Desmonds" Al Matthews
(Apone from Aliens) made an appearance as a mad preacher!

Also while I'm at spotting lesser known Aliens casts members, Frost
was on an ADIDAS commercial a good few years back. Oh and I remember
seeing Mark Rolston (Drake) on Babylon-5 as a serial killer.

Any more??

Cheers

Mas

Pendejo is an interesting word. The exact translation escapes me
at this moment, but it can loosely mean something along the lines of "you
dick."

Among Puerto Rican's, 'pendejo' means "pubic hair".

Switching scenes, what is Vasquez (or Drake) saying right after they start
firing their smart guns. I hear Vasquez say "lets rock", after that I am not sure.

Chris.

Off-subject, but just fyi, I noticed Jeannette GOldstein is also
in Paramount's _Star Trek: Generations_ movie, as the Science Officer
onboard NCC-1701B.
