There is little doubt that the members of the Academy have a collective
scientific literacy of an overcooked baked potato. Nevertheless, it is
disappointing that CONTACT was completely overlooked.

To those of you who are scientifically literate, I offer the following question
- which movie was most PROFOUND: Titanic, Good Will Hunting, or Contact?

Easy one: GOOD WILL HUNTING. CONTACT had a terible script, but it
certainly deserved mention in a number of other categories, such as
special effects, cinematography, editing and sound. That way-cool
slo-mo run to the medicine cabinet alone should be enough to get a
mention.

As far as the Oscars go, there have always been fine films which are
overlooked. Last year it was the superb COURAGE UNDER FIRE; this year
it's THE ICE STORM and COP LAND.

I'll give you Contact in the abstract sense, the question of man's place
in the universe - physically, philosophically, metaphysically. But,
Titanic was in fact profound in the sense that is was deeply moving, and
it told a complete story. The attention to detail was incredible. I
have not seen GWH.

However, I am surprised by the lack of nominations that I felt Contact
rightly deserved - Visual Effects, Film Editing (Air Force One!?!),
Sound Effects Editing, and Cinematography. As it stands, I do not see
Contact winning over Titanic for Best Sound.

What I cannot believe either is why the Academy limits the nominees to
only three for three of the big technical categories, especially with so
many technically driven films.

TITANIC's sound was excellent. I particularly liked hearing the faint
echoes of the past when they were doing the initial approach to the
wreck.

That's an excellent point. This is the most technical of art forms,
and to stint on nominations in these categories is ridiculous.
