AN unknown actor has beaten some of Hollywood's biggest names to land the
role of Anakin Skywalker in the next two episodes of Star Wars.
Hayden Christensen, 19, won his starring part in the most lucrative film
series ever made after spending a weekend screen-testing at Skywalker Ranch,
the California home of Star Wars producer George Lucas.
Christensen, whose biggest role so far has been in an obscure cable
television series about teenage drug rehabilitation, only moved from his
home in Canada to Hollywood this year.
"It was very quick," said Dani Delio, his agent in Canada. "He went down
there and two months later he's a star." Christensen was born in Vancouver
and has been acting in mainly local television since he was nine.
Even Daily Variety, Hollywood's trade paper, asked: "Who the heck is he?"
Well, the new star is blond, 6ft 4ins tall and says pizza is his favourite
food.
Lucas chose him over other hopefuls, including Paul Catermole of the boy
band S Club 7, because of his chemistry with Natalie Portman. She is
repeating her role as Queen Amidala and the pair eventually become lovers.
The teenager also faced strong challenges from Leonardo DiCaprio, Christian
Bale, star of American Psycho, and Colin Hanks, son of double Oscar winner
Tom.
Reaction to the choice was mixed but one fan who has seen him in a Canadian
teen drama said: "He exuded a brooding, seething presence, cutting people
down with menacing stares and quick words." Those skills should help.
Christensen's character eventually becomes the evil Darth Vader.
Christensen's agent doesn't think the effects of fame and lucrative plastic
doll franchise when he joins the pantheon of Star Wars collectibles has sunk
in yet. "He just really wants to do good work, that's really important for
him," said Ms Delio. "This other stuff I don't think has hit him
yet."Episode Two begins shooting in Australia next month with Ewan McGregor
returning as Obi-Wan Kenobi

Well, 6 ft 4 isn't really SMALL, I would think...

Not necessarily. If an actor is 6'0 or 6'1 or close enough. They can add
the rest via padded boots and camera angles. Plus, Vader's boots probably
increased his heighth a good two inches.

David Prowse, who played Darth Vader in the original trilogy, is 6ft 7 ins
tall; IIRC, in costume he stood just a smidge under seven feet.

Since Vader is "more machine than man" his height could be easily explained by
machinery.

Yes, but in ROTJ, you can see an outline of Vader's skeleton through
all the electricity, and his lower half is mechanical. Plus, the suit
adds height in the shoes and hat. Therefore, however tall Vader was
isn't necessarily binding on how tall Anakin is.
The one we should REALLY be measuring against is Sebastian Shaw. Does
anyone know his height?
1.) When Vader fights Obi-Wan in ANH
2.) End of ROTJ when the "ghostly" Vader stands next to the ghostly Obi-Wan
during the victory celebration.
If the Vader/Obi-Wan height difference in the two scenes is fairly
consistent (or even within 3 inches, remember David Prowse is like 6' 7"),
we can assume Anakin was at least 6' 4" or so, and of course the actor
playing him is 6' 1". But remember many "short" actors such as Sylvester
Stallone etc film their movies to make them look taller, so a 6' 1" actor
could come across as taller (elevator shoes?)

Yeah, judging by the Jedi Spirits cinema scene,
Anakin is a tad taller than Obi-Wan, sort of a two
and a quarter Yodas... um... if you stood two
Yodas on top of one another... then attached a
Yoda to the end of each arm and leg... then
wrapped the whole thing up in a Jedi robe.
Probably Anakin would still have more midi-
chlorians than that conglomeration of Yodas...
