Yeah, I know what you're thinking: What next, film adaptations of
Battleship or Candyland?

Well, actually ...

'Universal Pictures has won a four-studio bidding war to pick up the
film rights to the classic Atari video game "Asteroids," . . . As
opposed to today's games, there is no story line or fancy world-
building mythology, so the studio would be creating a plot from
scratch.'

So four studios fought for the right to make something up from
scratch?

I wonder if they'll be true to the original characters or whether
they'll change things like that rat bastard J.J. Abrams did. :)

We move with 'heard' instinct. (I.e., if we've heard of it, we'll pay
to watch a movie of it. Accept your moviegoer heritage.) So, the
studios have bought a one-shot surefire greenlight. (And won't it be
fun for whomever gets to dream up the plot... especially knowing they
can't do worse with this particular concept than ARMAGEDDON did...)

The mind boggles. And if they're making up a script about deadly asteroids
that has nothing to do with the game (and unless it's 120 minutes of a guy
in a spaceship rotating from left to right then any similarities will be of
the vaguest nature) then why not just call it Asteroids? It's a plural noun
descriptive of the threat, nothing more, nothing less. Certainly nothing
for Atari's lawyers to hang anything concrete on, surely?

Or are they bidding to use the actual multi-coloured Asteroids *logo* for
the movie? Which brings us back to the original question of why, if the
movie has nothing to do with the game?

Hollywood seems to be losing more of the plot on a day by day basis.

The only video-game movies I recall falling well short of ARMAGEDDON's
threshold were by Uwe Boll ...and I doubt any of the four bidding
studios has that fate in mind...

Robot Chicken already did the previews for the 'Chutes & Ladders' and
'Hungry Hungry Hippos' movies.

Well, darn you, Ken. After spending too much time looking for my
Pac Man Fever album, I later realized I don't have a record
player to play it on, so I paid Amazon 99 cents to download a
copy of "Hyperspace (Asteroids)". Darn you to heck!

(Still, if this project rumbles into shooting, it might be nice
of them to throw a bit of money to Jerry Buckner and Gary Garcia,
unless that would open up a worm-can of entangled rights.)
