Brief Comments on Battlefield Earth

Battlefield Earth, the movie based on a sci-fi novel by Scientolo_y
founder L. Ron Hubbard, has a reputation for being atrocious. I
understand the criticism but I think it's overstating the point. There
were some things I liked about it.
The story takes place in the year 3000. Our planet has long since been
conquered by the Psychlos (from planet Pyschlo), lumbering large
humanoids who are exploiting our mineral wealth. They killed most of
humanity with some sort of gas devices, and the scattered remainder
has been reduced to very primitive lives.
John Travolta and Forrest Whitaker feature prominently as Psychlos
working in the field of security. Barry Pepper is the feral-haired
young leader of the human resistance. I like the way the Psychlos
appear so much larger than humans. They look to be about eight to ten
feet tall each. In the film, the height differential between them and
humans I think it's achieved through creative camera angles and
stilt-like prostheses hidden by the Psychlos' big black boots. It was
an unusual thing to regard.
The film has a bluish cast over everything, sort of like some old
jeans commercials I vaguely recall. Production values are medium. Sex
and violence: there's not that much here really. Some Psychlos get
shot, and one loses an arm in an explosion, but there's nothing much
graphic about it.
Pepper was kind of young to portray the rebel leader. He did okay I
guess, but I dunno if at the time he was sufficient to play this role.
On the other hand Travolta and Whitaker are great as Psychlos. There's
a lot of backstabbing and one-upsmanship and it plays out humorously.
On the whole, it was okay, but I didn't really like it. I liked some
things about it. There's a genuine plot here, Hubbard was evidently
telling a cool if not overly sophisticated tale.
