Paperbacks
(including trade paperbacks and proofs)

109. Barton, William A. Dark Sky Legion. Bantam-Spectra, 1992. Brad-bound,
singled-sided editing long galley, F-. Excellent shape considering what it
is. Can't be anything earlier than this except the original manuscript.
$25.

110. Barrett, Jr., Neal. Slightly Off Center. SWAN Press, 1992. Trade
paperback. F. Short story collection. Stories both hilarious and dark
(sometimes at the same time). Recommended. Signed by Barrett, introducer
Joe R. Lansdale, and Hugo-winning artist Brad Foster. Pick it up at cover
price. $10.

111. Bisson, Terry. Wyrldmaker. Pocket (Timescape), 1981. NF, with a spine
crease, light bumping at head, small stain/scruff on bottom back cover,
and a line across head and heel. PBO fantasy novel. Author's first book.
$7.50.

112. Bloch, Robert. There is a Serpent in Eden. Zebra, 1979. Apparant PBO.
NF- with spine and rear cover creases. $7.50.

113. Card, Orson Scott. Hart's Hope. Tor, 1988. Paperback reprint. NF,
with spine creases, slight lean, and line at head and heel. Inscribed by
Card: "to Veda‹/A tale of sweetness/& light‹/19 Feb 1988" (Card attended
Sercon II, which was held in Austin over that weekend.) Fantasy. Some
claim it's Card's best novel. $5.

114. Clarke, Arthur C. The Challange of the Sea. Dell, 1966. Reprint. NF+,
with spine and spine/rear cover join creases. Non-fiction. Introduction by
Wernher von Braun. $5.

115. Datlow, Ellen, and Terri Windling, editors. The Year's Best Fantasy
and Horror: Third Annual Collection. Trade paperback (simultaneous with
hardback issue), NF. Humorous inscription by Ellen Datlow. My roommate had
Ellen sign this, not realizing that I had bought the hardcover for my
collection. Cover price is $15, but since it's personally inscribed to me
(albeit in error), I have to charge extra for its vast associational
value. $15.25.

116. Davidson, Avram. The Phoenix and the Mirror. Paperback reprint, Ace,
1978. NF+ with wear to spine edges. Modern Fantasy 100 list. $5.

117. Dick, Philip K. The Man in the High Castle. Popular Library, 1962.
1st paperback? VG with several cover creases, general wear, tape on front
cover, etc. Hugo winner, SF 100. Reading copy. $3.

118. Fanthorpe, R. L. (writing as Pel Torro). Galaxy 666. Leisure, 1968.
F-. 1st U.S. paperback? In any case, a reprint of the Badger first. Widely
acclaimed (or reviled) as The Worst Science Fiction Novel Ever Written. It
might also qualify as a weird Star Trek collectable, since (for no
apparent reason) the cover photo depicts a blurred blue model of the
Enterprise, albeit one with an odd bridge linking the two engine pods. The
first book ever to depict the Enterprise? Who the heck knows? Completely
off the cheese-o-meter. You'll get your money's worth in entertainment
value just reading the thing aloud at parties, especially the passages
where he listed adjectives from a thesaurus to pad out the book. ("The
things were odd, weird, grotesqueŠ"). $10.

119. Flewelling, Lynn. Luck in the Shadows. Bantam, 1996. Uncorrected
Proof. F with contact sticker on cover. $5.

120. Foy, George. The Shift. Bantam, 1996. Uncorrected Proof. F with
contact sticker on cover. $5.

121. (Gabriel, Peter) Rabid Chalk. Deerfield Press, 1983. Poetry chapbook
edited by Melina Costello. VG-, with considerable rubbing to the black
cover, an address sticker for "Mg" (who contributed two poems), and an
inscription (and two gold stars!) by "MG" to "Jeff." Reprints ("with
permission") the lyrics to Peter Gabriel's "Modern Love", a song off Peter
Gabriel (aka Peter Gabriel I). Personally I would have preferred "Here
Comes the Flood." Actually a pretty ugly package, but this sucker has got
to be rare. Somewhere out there, some fanatical Genesis/Peter Gabriel
collector needs this to complete their collection . . . $20

122. Garton, Ray. Darklings. Pinnacle, 1985. VG w/spine creases, black
marker writing on front endpaper, cover intact. $6.

123. Garton. Darklings. Another copy. Pinnacle, 1985. VG- w/spine creases,
bookstore stamp on bottom, chipped front cover. $4.

with contact sticker on cover. $5.

126. Hughart, Barry. Eight Skilled Gentlemen. Doubleday Foundation, 1991.
Trade paperback (simultaneous with hardback issue), NF. The third Master
Li novel, and just as funny as the other two. Highly Recommended. Pick it
up at half cover price. $5.

127. Jackson, Shirley, The Haunting of Hill House. Popular Library, 1962.
Movie tie-in edition. VG w/spine creases, edgewear, neat writing on
interior cover. Horror 100 list, Fantasy 100 list, Modern Fantasy 100
list, King list. The movie, The Haunting, was excellent and quite
unnerving. Recommended. $5.

128. Jackson. We Have Always Lived in the Castle. Reprint, Popular
Library, 1962. NF with spine creases. $3.

129. Jacobi, Karl. Revelations in Black. Jove, 1979. NF with a small

stamp on heel. PBO horror novel. $5.

131. Jeter. The Glass Hammer. Bluejay, 1985. TP, F- with "Used" stamped in
red on heel. Perhaps the most structurally ambitious novel ever published
in SF. Highly recommended. $10.

132. Jeter. Morlock Night. DAW, 1979. PBO. NF w/corner creases and some
rubbing/staining to back cover. The very first steampunk novel.
Recommended. Signed by Jeter. $10.

133. Jeter. Seeklight. Laser Books, 1975. PBO. VG, with spine and cover
creases, name and bookstore stamp on interior front cover, crayon mark on
last page. Signed by Jeter. $7.

Proof. NF with contact sticker on cover. Signed by Jeter. $10.

136. Jones, Robert F. Blood Sport. Dell, 1975. 1st paperback, F- with sun
fading to spine. Well written, interesting slipstream novel of a father
and son hunting trip up the Hassayampa River, which runs from upstate New
York to China. Highly thought of by both Joe R. Lansdale and William
Browning Spencer. hard to find these days. Recommend. $7.

137. King, Stephen (as Richard Bachman). Roadwork - NEL (UK), 1st British,
1981. Fine. $30.

138. Kirk, Russell. Old House of Fear. Avon, 1969. Reprint. VG-, with
cover and spine creases, bookstore stamp, and a 3/4" chip missing from
bottom spine. However, signed by Kirk. $10.

139. Koontz, Dean (as Aaron Wolfe). Invasion. Laser Books, 1979. PBO. NF,
with spine and cover creasing and interior writing.

140. Lansdale, Joe R. (as Jack Buchanen) MIA Hunter #3: Hanoi Deathgrip.
Jove, 1985. NF, with slight spine creasing, very slight spine lean,
interior signature, two small purple stars (looks like some sort of
bookseller mark) on head and a tiny "6" in what looks like pencil on heel.
Better than it sounds, and better than you usually find it. Signed by
Lansdale, as both Lansdale and Buchanen. $15.

141. Lansdale, Joe R. (as Jack Buchanen) MIA Hunter #3: Hanoi Deathgrip.
Jove, 1985. NF-, with more noticeable spine creasing, and spine lean, and
some sort of yellow staining to head. Signed by Lansdale, as both
Lansdale and Buchanen. $10.

1985. NF, with multiple spine creasing and spine lean. Signed by Lansdale,
as both Lansdale and Buchanen. Multiple copies (last signed only as
Lansdale), best dispensed first. $10.

143. Lansdale (as Jack Buchanen). Stone: MIA Hunter #7: Saigon Slaughter.
Jove, 1987. NF, with multiple spine creasing and slight spine lean,
interior signature, three small purple stars (looks like some sort of
bookseller mark) on head and a tiny "5" in what looks like pencil on heel.
However, page edges noticeably brighter than usual. Signed by Lansdale, as
both Lansdale and Buchanen. $12.50.

144. Lansdale (as Jack Buchanen). Stone: MIA Hunter #7: Saigon Slaughter.
Jove, 1987. NF-, with multiple spine creasing and more significant spine
lean. Signed by Lansdale, as both Lansdale and Buchanen. $10.00.

1/4" line on heel. More worn than above. Signed by Lansdale, as both
Lansdale and Buchanen. $7.50.

146. Lansdale. Savage Season. Bantam/Ziesing, 1990. Unbound "first pass"
page proofs. Signed by Lansdale. OK, here's the deal. This is a
typesetting proof (unbound Xerox pages) of the Bantam paperback edition.
However, this copy was used to transcribe the novel into electronic format
for the Ziesing hardback edition by myself, Dwight Brown, and Glen Cox.
The first page is wrinkled and has a faint beverage ring stain, otherwise
fine, with corrections by both myself (handwritten in blue ink) and
whoever set the Bantam edition (present when I received the manuscript). A
unique item for the Lansdale completist! In original FedEx envelope. $250.

147. Lansdale (as Ray Slater). Texas Night Riders. Leisure Books, 1983.
VG+ with spine crease, spine lean, slight creasing to top rear cover edge,
interior bookstore stamps, writing on inside back cover. Signed by
Lansdale, as both Slater and Lansdale. Scarce. $25.

148. Lansdale. The Two Bear Mambo. Mysterious Press, 1995. 1st paperback.
NF with two spine creases. The third Hap and Leonard novel. Even though
the hardback preceeds, this paperback edition is actually a collectable in
its own right because they mispelled Lansdale's name (as Joe Landsdale) on
the title page. $5.

149. Leinster, Murray. The Hot Spot (Land of the Giants #2). Pyramid,
1969. VG, with rubbing, nicks, a half-inch chip from top rear cover, and
first few page edges crumbling. Never knew he did media-tie-in work before
I stumbled across this. Man had to eat, I guess. $5.

150. Leinster. Operation Outer Space. Signet, 1957. reprint. NF-, with
shallow chipping, red line on heel, some age staining, and pages yellowed.
An oldy moldy with bubble-helmeted space suits and a Hugo-shaped space
ship on the cover. $3.

August Derleth. Beagle Books, 1971. 1st paperback. Lovecraft, Robert E.

Corgi (UK), 1977. G, bent and battered with a large sticker on cover and
lots of general creasing and wear. "From the publisher of THE
EXORCIST‹More erotic tales of terror" (How desperate do you have to be to
hype something as "From the Publisher of"?) Original stories by Steve
Utley, Joeseph F. Pumilia, Ramsey Campbell, and David Drake, plus
reprints. $3.

153. Matheson, Richard Shock! - Dell, 1961. Slight edgewear, otherwise

collection. $10.

155. Matheson. The Shores of Space. Bantam, 1969, second printing. VG+,

cover, and lines at head and heel. Story collection. Still, acceptable
reading copy of a collection that hasn't been reprinted in a loooong time.
$5.

156. Melville, Herman. The Confidence Man. Airmont, 1966. Reprint. F-,
with red line on heel. Well, it's on the Horror 100 List, and is one of
Melville's less reprinted works. $3.

157. Miller, Walter M. The View from the Stars. Panther (UK), 1973.
Paperback reprint, NF+, with a bumped spine bottom, very slight spine
wear, and lines on head and heel. Another short story collection that

a trace of edgewear on the top back cover and slight staining on top edge.
Otherwise a bright, tight copy. Dillon cover. Interesting psychological
drama of solitary crewman going mad on a spaceship fleeing an earthly
holocaust. As far as I know, the only hardback of this ever produced was
the book club edition. Recommended. $5.

160. National Lampoon. Bored of the Rings. Signet, 1969. 12th Printing.
F-. A parody of you-know-what, following the adventures of Frito Bugger
(son of Dildo). I remember being highly amused by this in my mispent
youth. $5.

161. Oliver, Chad. Giants in the Dust. Pyramid, 1976. PBO? G+, with
significant rubbing, ballpoint pen indentions to cover (i.e., someone used
the book as a scribbling surface underneath a piece of paper), and a
signnificant chip out of the bottom page edges of half the book, not
affecting any text. SF. A decent reading copy. Chad was the dean of Austin
science fiction writers, and a truly nice guy. $3.

this stuff to pay the bills. $10.

Lawrence, there are 522 notes on this newsgroup tonight, and over 300 of
them are new since I last browsed this group. How am I supposed to find
your ordering information without spending hours doing it?

I expect I speak for many potential buyers when I suggest that you put
your ordering information in every individual note.
