Jordin Kare, often seen at cons, was mentioned in the
Washington Post today:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/11/04/AR2009110405052.html

His wife, Mary Kay Kare, used to post here regularly.

Thanks for that, Keith.

I was at Jordin's presentation about this at Worldcon, when he was his
usual entertaining self :-)

It is great to see that it worked!

"Robot goes all the way in space elevator competition"

[blink] [blink]

"By Associated Press
Thursday, November 5, 2009

"EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, CALIF. -- A robot powered by a ground-based
laser beam climbed a long cable dangling from a helicopter Wednesday,
qualifying for prize money in a $2 million competition to test the
potential reality of the science fiction concept of space
elevators. ..."

Later, "The contest requires that the machines climb 2,953 feet up a
cable slung beneath a helicopter ...." I ran it thru /usr/bin/units.
That's 900 m.

"LaserMotive's two principals, Jordin Kare and Thomas Nugent, said
they were relieved after two years of work. They said their real goal
is to develop a business based on the idea of beaming power, not on
the idea of accessing space via an elevator climbing a cable."
