FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Joint Reading by Sean Stewart and Martha Soukup 8/29/98

Sean Stewart and Martha Soukup will appear at The Other Change of
Hobbit, located at 2020 Shattuck Avenue (at University) in downtown
Berkeley, California, on Saturday, August 29, 1998, from 1:00 P.M. to
3:00 P.M. Stewart will be promoting his newest novel, MOCKINGBIRD,
published by Ace Books, and Soukup will be signing copies of her
collection of short stories, THE ARBITRARY PLACEMENT OF WALLS, from
DreamHaven Publishing. This event is free and open to the public.

In MOCKINGBIRD, Sean Stewart has used his stunning talent to merge the
twin streams of magic realism and contemporary fantasy into a single
powerful current. With their mother's death, two sisters look forward
to new lives free of the burden of magic, but they learn that "Some
gifts may not be refused."

His previous works include THE NIGHT WATCH, RESURRECTION MAN, NOBODY'S
SON, and PASSION PLAY, all available from Ace Books.

"Stewart has a tremendous talent for illuminating the interior lives of
his characters," says a starred review of THE NIGHT WATCH in PUBLISHERS
WEEKLY. "His depiction of the glory and caprice of the gods both
balances his main character's foibles and highlights their basic
nobility."

The NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW said, of RESURRECTION MAN, "The real
magic here is the tight focus and emotional intensity that Mr. Stewart
sustains in tracking Dante's arduous journey toward self-knowledge."

BOOKLIST says that Stewart's writing " . . . echoes the best of Le Guin
and Tolkien."

Kim Stanley Robinson, author of RED MARS and ANTARCTICA, called PASSION
PLAY "a fine novel, in the grand tradition of the SF thriller . . . a
very exciting debut."

William Gibson, groundbreaking author of NEUROMANCER and IDORU, says,
"Sean Stewart is a talent to watch."

Martha Soukup's decade of published stories garnered her much acclaim
and many award nominations, including those for the Hugo, Nebula, and
John W. Campbell awards, and her story "In Defense of the Social
Contract" won a Nebula. THE ARBITRARY PLACEMENT OF WALLS collects the
best of her stories yet written. Delving into twisted psyches in her
stories, Soukup reveals a gentle understanding for the 'alien' in us
all.

MOCKINGBIRD by Sean Stewart (ISBN 0-441-00547-0, 272 pp, August 1998,
$21.95) is published by Ace Books. THE ARBITRARY PLACEMENT OF WALLS, a
