Several years ago, in the 1980s, an auction house in my neighborhood (Greenwich
Village) had an extremely successful sale of Bil Baird's marionettes. I was
lucky enough to purchase several things:
-a blue bug rod puppet (used on the CBS Morning Show)
-a portrait marionette of Marlene Dietrich (with a trick mechanism that makes
her look like she's reallly smoking a cigarette)
-a vulture marionette, supposedly from a TV Wheaties commercial
-and some miscellaneous puppet heads.
Does anyone remember this sale? Has anyone seen any Bil Baird puppets for sale
since then?
Does anyone remember Bil Baird's puppets on the CBS Morning Show? or any of his
TV commercials? Is there any way to see them now?
Thanks in advance for any responses.
- Carol
I just picked up at Blockbuster Video a tape of Bil Baird's production
of "Davey Jones Locker". Very nicely done, go look for it.

Good for you for starting a new thread !
Sounds like you got some cool puppets.
Joe
If this was directed at my post re: Bil Baird then the answer is Yes-No-Yes
Yes - I personally have some cool puppets that I made (some where
costumed by my late mother)
No - I did not purchase any puppets from the auction (a long and woefull
tale indeed)
Yes - I videotaped some cool puppets, as well as interviews with Baird
puppeteers (including Peter)...the tape is in the Lincoln Center
Film/Theater video library

Since you live in New York, you might try The Museum of Radio and
Television to see if any of Baird's work is archived.

There are quite a number of kinescopes
of Bil's work at the Museum of Radio & Television in N.Y.C. and Beverly
Hills,CA.
However ALOT of things are not, such as "Art Carney Meets Peter and
the Wolf", most
Ed Sullivan appearances, commercials &
most of his educational shorts. There SHOULD be "Morning Shows" in their
catalogue, however they would probably NOT be listed under Bil & Cora's
name.
I hold an annotated list of every one of Bil & Cora Baird's TV
appearances and their air dates if you'd like me to research a
particular show.
Just to let you and everyone know, that the
Bil and Cora Baird web site will be up and running soon. I'm making
available my
library of photos and kinescopes of Bil and
Cora's early work. There will also be drawings,
memorabilia , insight into Baird Marionette
construction and the entire history of the Baird
Marionettes.
See You All There!
Cheers,
Steve Weber
