: Thanx :)
The ages of artistic endeavor are generally agreed upon (not ever
specifically agreed upon) by certain critical authorities who are heads
of universities or departments at universities. In the English-speaking
world, with regard to English and American literature in the main (I am a
professor of English and American literature with some deep study in
European and Asian literature), the ages of literary endeavor are roughly
as follows:
Ancient (before Christ)
Early Christian Era (0 to 400)
Early Middle Ages (400-800) (collapse of the Roman Empire)
Dark Ages (800-1066) (Norman Invasion of Britain)
Late Middle Ages (1066-1492) (discovery of the New World)
Renaissance (1300's in Italy, spreading to the rest of Europe in 16th and
17th centuries)
Enlightenment/NeoClassical Period - 18th Century in Europe and America up
to the French Revolution
Modernism - a term first used by Pope Pius in 1907 to depict the trend to
modernization particularly in Roman Catholic doctrine in terms of
scientific thought as it expressed itself in the 19th century. The term
then applied itself to everything.
Post-Modernism - Generally applied to anything that happened after the
19th century or during the fin du siecle of the 19th century (1890's and
afterward.) I call Post-Modernism in literature the Century of Madness.
Other people call it other things.
I hope that helps.
