Sweet Summer's Child, in the spring of thy life,
In thy dark eyes, behind decernment deep,
Do I see weariness, from struggle and strife?
Does thy furrowed brow soften in thy sleep?
I behold thee oft, in all thy splendor
Though between us stand years, and miles of floor,
The raucous din of the coffee vendor,
And upheld books, of poetry and lore.
I send good thoughts, after a fashion
From a tattered old man, to a fair youth.
Not out of lust, or improper passion,
But for Beauty, and Love, and for God's Truth.
With care unspoken, I again thank thee,
For a kind smile, and coin you once gave me.
