Being as deaf as a post, and because somehow I've never been able to
stomach the sight or sound of Jack Thompson in real life or in movies,
I've never actually seen that movie.
I'm also conflicted about the story depicted in the movie because, if
I've got the history right, Morant was not the hero that the Oz media
and much Oz public opinion profess him to have been. Even Kit Denton,
author of the book on which the movie was based, tried to hose down
the idolatry generated by the movie. Whatever else he might have
been, Morant was a murderous if charming rogue, and thoroughly
deserved his ultimate fate, even if others who escaped censure might
have deserved a similar fate.
His real value to Australia, however, was that once and for all his
trial and execution led the Australian government to forbid the
British to execute Australians pour encourager les autres as hitherto
had been their wont. Some good came out of the affair, even if the
movie distorted the story somewhat.

program and i was always glad when the wrisier was Lloyd
