Jimmy McGovern does it again! Yet another satisfying Cracker adventure.
Boy, what an ending. I was sitting on the edge of my seat while DS
Penhaligan was sitting on Beck, ready to deliver him to his maker.

This was not the best Cracker episode, but it seemed an improvement over
The Big Crunch. The last few episodes have involved major crises. First
Judith's departure, which seemed final until the unexpected surprise.
Then DCI Bilborough's death in "To be a Somebody". Now, Beck may be out
of the picture if Penhaligan polished him off! We may be seeing some
major changes in the series in the next while.

POSSIBLE SCENARIOS:

(1) My guess is Penhaligan didn't pull the trigger. At least, I hope not!
She is one of my favourite characters on the show, although she is relegated
to following Cracker around everywhere. The character of Penhaligan has
not been significantly developed - only to the extent that she is a DS
who is VERY bright, but who is oppressed is a male dominated profession.
Her "meeting of minds" with Fitz is a testament to her depth of
character and intelligence. Only she has served as an appendage to Fitz,
occasionally acting as his love interest.

It is no wonder she was driven to madness, when treated shabbily by Fitz
and raped, possibly by Beck. Hopefully McGovern or Whitehead will develop
her character in a more positive and constructive light. Actually, I'd
like to see the demise of that schmuck DCI Wise and his replacement by
Penhaligan. Isn't she due for a promotion? Especially if Beck is gone?

(2) Penhaligan blew Beck's brains out, and the next episode is dedicated
to Fitz getting her off. Naah, this isn't like Law and Order.

Lunch time. Will continue this review at a later time...

I have to agree. This was a very good CRACKER. I still think the
best episode was two back, with the serial killer, but this was a big
improvement over the last one.

I think we have to assume that Penhaligon has pulled the trigger
and is calling to tell Fitz about it. After all, the evidence is gone
and Beck could not be convicted. Except that the other option is that
with a gun in his mouth, Beck has confessed, and Penhaligon is calling
Fitz to tell him to come and witness the confession. How this type
of coerced confession would hold up in court is another thing.

One question: We saw Beck smash up his car and walk away. When
Fitz arrives at his home, he walks past the burnt out shell of a still
burning car. Who's car is that?

All I hope is that there is another episode so we can find out what
really happened to Pehaligon [p?].

Re the burnt out car, that was the one stolen by the rapist prior to
going to Fitz' house.

I thought that the rapist (errrr mental block here) was the one
who torched the car -- wasn't it the one he stole -- as a sort
of deversion.

As for Beck I was getting the impression that he was on the
verge of suicide. So what if he in fact wrestled the gun from
Penhaligon and the blew his own brains out -- too contrieved (??).

So was this the season finale, or is there another Cracker. I
really enjoy this series -- sadly I missed a few?

Yup, they said in the police station - He's torched the Escort on XXXX road - then Fitz says:
that's my road.

Anyway - do I have to wait for the next episode? Are these episodes based on books or anything?
I had taped the last three aired episodes (only aired episodes?)- not having time to watch
them, then sat nursing a cold all weekend and had a Cracker-fest. But what an ending!!!!
Is there a book which will tell me more? PLEASE!!!!!!!!!

I've come to dread mysteries/police dramas that have rape as the crime.
This was a complete exception to all the trite rules. Wow. It really
shook me up. Penhaligon found a way to make Beck feel the incredible fear
and violation she felt. How in the heck are they going to continue from
here?

I hope she didn't shoot him, but I sort of think she did. Could she make
it look like a suicide? If she hadn't had that chat with her boss it
might have worked.

That was the car that the rapist stole to get over to Fitz's house. I
knew that Judith was going to be attacked as soon as she moved back in.
That wasn't the most original part of the script, was it?
