THUNDER ISLAND *spoilers* the ending????

it today, and there is no way I know of to retrieve all those old posts.
So I thought I might open up a new thread. Now, here's my take on the
ending.
Since I have always been good at anagrams, I picked up on Edward
Daniels/Andrew Laeddis early on. I also figured out the YOU ARE HIM code
when Teddy first found the rocks. I didn't pick up on Dolores Chanal/Rachel
Soldano -- only because I forgot about her maiden name.
My question is, what do you think happened at the end? My impression was
that Teddy refused to admit he was Andrew, then they drugged him with
something that "forced" the dreams, and he complied.
Last chapter, he's with Chuck again, who nods to Cawley, and apparently
they're coming to take Teddy away, because he's "regressed" again. So,
Chuck was really Sheehan. The first "Rachel" was the doctor who was hiding
in the cave and subsequently gave Teddy the shot at the end? I lost track
of Rachels. And so, Rachel was really Dolores. But if Teddy was Andrew,
then what about Teddy's Dad and the boats?
And how in heck do you pronounce AULE?
It seems open to different interpretations, and I'm still tossing it around
in my head, considering, rereading parts of the book, and I thought, why not
ask the RAMers and get some other views, since I don't know anyone else
who's read the book.

In my mind, The name "Chuck Aule" is no accident because it sounds like
Chagall, whose artistic style was very much about hyper-realism and the
fantastic. Though IIRC, he wasn't quite as Cubist per se as Picasso....

Sarah. I'm ashamed to say what I saw in his name. But I will because
I'm sitting grinning to myself at my stupidity. I pronounced his name
as 'Chuckle' and just thought it was some jokey thing :o) Duh!

there for all that time. The experimental therapy failed and he regressed,
and got shipped off to have the surgery. The support for this is that Chuck
Aule wouldn't have gone along with saying he was the other therapist unless
he really was. If he really was Chuck Aule, a federal marshal, he wouldn't
have reappeared briefly as the therapist. Still, it leaves a lot of room
for discussion.

Yes, lots of room for discussion. If only I could find more people who've
read it. I checked out a few reviews and it has more people than me

I figured the stuff in the early part of the book (Ferry trip,
relationship with Dad) as part of the delusion Andrew was having. He
was clearly delusional thinking Chuck was a fellow agent, indeed that
he was an agent, so why not his past history and the ferry trip?
Clearly Andrew was delusional. Anything involving Teddy had to be a
part of his illness.
And I didn't reply earlier because I was trying to figure out the
anagram between Thunder Island and Shutter Island. :)

I also wondered abut the Ferry boat memories, but maybe he was remembering
his first trip to the island. He had to get there some way, and maybe he
was seasick the whole time, and that's what he's remembering. Maybe his
delusions started then, and he thought he was a marshal at that point. I'm
trying to remember now if he actually was a marshal before he went crazy (if
indeed he was crazy, and not drugged by the hospital crowd and deluded into
thinking he was crazy). If the whole thing was a scheme to bring back his
sanity, then possibly they could have "let" him escape, but that doesn't
seem too likely. Then they say he'd been there for two years, but he only
remembers it as being a couple of days, with no clear memory of the last few
years. I suppose enough antipsychotic drugs could do that to you, and then
the withdrawal of suddenly stopping could also add to the effect. Anyway,
lots to ponder.
