There are cheaper places to stay than the Hyatt. Of course, it's important
that the convention hotel get filled up, and I'm sure it will be, but there
are much cheaper hotels, , not necessarily nearby, but right on the
underground, so not difficult to get to. Hope to see you guys here.

Back in 1968 when I lived in Sausalito in an ancient one-bedroom
apartment on Bridgeway, I suddenly realized that everyone was crashing
at my place. I had one invited guest, but there were about twelve more
who slept, bathed and ate in my place. I had a major house-cleaning day.

On my last visit to SF in 1982, I stayed at a hotel called The Brothel which
catered to a gay clientele. It was on Geary Street I think. Located near the
new cathedral with the modernisitc desgin shaped like a bishop's mitre, the
hotel was also a few blocks from Korea town. I haven;t bothered to look up
whether this place still exists.... the building probably does but the
nature of the lodging is probably different. It was an older building,
charming, with the lobby tricked out in red velvet. It had an old fashioned
elevator with two doors you had to close, which didn't stop exactly level in
the floor you went to, As I recall it was reasonable in price but tht was
nearly 30 years ago. I had a great time in The City as folks call it. It was
October and one day of a cold misty rain was followed by a week of great
cool sunny weather.

Maybe I shall try to go as I've never been to a Bouchercon. Take care

Oh yes. I was there. Spent a lot of time in the Haight at friends'
houses. Went to concerts. I worked for a band that didn't go anywhere,
but Bill Graham invited us to his places, and I saw just about all the
bands. Now, when I look back, I'm really grateful that I was in the

We rented space at the Sausalito heliport for rehearsals. It was about
the only place nobody complained about the noise.

The last time I was in SF (in fact the only time) was in February of
1967, when the summer of love was about to explode. I was 12. I
remember being on a tour bus with my parents, and the bus took us to
Haight Asbury to view the "hippies". I got the sense that they were in
a zoo, and we were just viewing the inmates. Maybe you were one of
them?

At least, that's how I remember it.

Tourists took my picture in Sausalito. Most of them asked nicely first.
But, yeah, we were the local fauna on display for the tourists, or so
they thought, anyway. I was actually working in the city for Kelly
Girls, but I'd come home, park, change clothes and hit the street in
beads and flowing garments, thrilling the straights who came to gape.

That would be great. As for the hotel, I've never heard of it, so I suspect
it's gone (or at least changed names, probably several times). There are
several inexpensive hotels in that general area (near St. Mary's Cathedral).
Not a terribly convenient location unless you really like riding buses or
going to Mass.

Yes, Elaine a/k/a Spanky, and the whole gang. Nigel Pickering, who was
Fred Williams when I first met him, Oz Bach both from Coconut
Grove/Miami and met Spanky when she came down from Old Town, Chicago. A
couple of others I didn't know as well, though I do remember Malcolm
Hale who died in 1968. They were doing very well at that time.

That dress came from Anastasia's, which was a little shop in the
basement of the building I lived in on Bridgeway. Gale Garnett bought
it for me, as a gift. If you know who Gale is, you're not a spring

We have a winner! Yes, Gale wrote that and sang it, and I'm pretty sure
that she never realized that the tune was the same as 3 Coins in the

You didn't need to fake it! That's a lot of hair. Remember how heavy

If you get queasy, don't read this.

Do you remember feeling a hair on your lip, and taking hold of it to
remove it, only to discover that you have swallowed it, and as you pull
it away from your lips, you feel it pulling for the entire length?

I had friends who claim that they were pulling my hair out of their

Oh yes. Those were (literally) a pain in the tuchus.

Fortunately, almost immediately after menarche I was given

Being a good hippy, I don't remember that period...must mean I lived
through it.

(actually had hair down to my shoulders - almost - I couldn't stand it
any longer than that! with a scraggly moustache, the best I could grow
at that time. Now, I have a goatee to accompany that moustache)

I have more resources now than I did 30 years ago so I like to stay in nicer
places. No sense in being uncomfortable. When I was there it was just at the
beginning of the AIDS crisis which folks din't really think it was a crisis
so hotels like the Brothel probably went away long ago. I spent time on
buses but mostly walked being in better shape back then.

I cruised the Castro, bought a sex toy that was illegal in Texas at them
time (never got around to using it however) and walked all over Chinatown
and around Coit Tower, Ghirardeli Square. Did all the tourist stuff, Gray
Line tour of the city , Muir Woods, Golden Gate Bridge, Sausalito etc. I was
there 10 days and wanted to stay longer. SF is a really beautiful city and
the weather was great but neat the coean it was very cold, One thing I
remember on my last day there at teh airport leaving ther TVs were full of
the news that Anwar Sadat had been assasinated and there was talk on the
airplane abuot it. I recall it was a bumpy ride all the way home. Looking up
Safdat it was in 1981 not 82 that I visited the place. Take care

There's that, but what keeps me from getting one (and I would if this
weren't an issue) is how dull and unsaturated the colors are -- they
remind me of cheap comic books from my childhood (and maybe now). Washed
out, dull reds, greens, and blues don't make it for me. Even the blacks
are kinda thin and washed out looking.

We need inks that really stand out -- metallics, stained-glass-level
luminescent colors, etc.

Some of the newer art is done in very bright inks, but I've read that
those bright colors all fade over time. After 5-10 years, all that's
left is a dull blue/black and some muddy reds. So whatever you have
done had better look good in monochrome.

I've seen some that show up under a black light. And some of the
colors I've seen in some magazines are pretty vibrant. Can't say how
long they'll last though.

Of course, mine won't get faded by the sun...

Well, my son and my daughter both have tattoos, and they tend to
say, "Look, I'm a walking art gallery. Look at my Native Southwestern
American rabbit! Look at my Scythian dragon! Look at my very
large beetle, with complete anatomical accuracy!" (The beetle's,
not the wearer's.)

No way would I get a tattoo; I've read _The Stars My Destination_

keep expecting my kids to decide they don't want theirs any more
and now what are they going to do? but they haven't yet.

That, I'm afraid, is not a story. I shed. Hair reaches the end of its
growth cycle and falls out with no regard for man nor beast. People
walking around wearing socks catch an end, and when the hair is
loooooooooooong it manages to work its way into the knit in such a way
that it melds, becomes part of the whole. See? Dull as dishwater.

I _used_ to be that same way, with the same attitude. Now it's
situational. I look at a young woman who tattoos major parts of her
anatomy, who can't walk down the aisle in a wedding dress without
showing it off, and wonder the same thing. What will she be thinking
when she's older? That's a long time to live with such permanence.

Met a woman at a party a few weeks ago who was showing off her tattoo,
which took up her entire back, and a portion of her gluteus maximus.
It was beatuiful art work, well done, and she could still wear a
bikini. Would I appreciate her in a bikini? I'm not sure.

Now with me, I was in my mid 50s, and my attitude is that at that age,
who cares? It's just skin, which in about 30 years will be ash. In the
meantime, if I'm in an accident and horribly disfigured, they can look
at my butt on the slab and say "Yep. That's him. He always loved the
Grateful Dead." ;)

Of course, I always was a non-conformist. Somebody has to do it.

pretty dull. The leaves were the rugosa type rose leaf (a variety you don;t
see m,uch here in Texas as rugosas are more suited to cold climates-- the
leaves aare very wrinkled and hairy while most roses suited for the south
are smooth leafed.). It was interesting the German tattoo artist did that,
presumably because rugosa roses are more common in Germany. Take care

I knew a gyt who secretly wore them. He thought they were terrifically

I would get one ionly IF they only lasted a short time. If they faded away
completely in 5-10 years I might do it. I recall when a friend wanted to get
his ear pierced many years ago he got the agreement of all his firends
including me to doi it also, As soon as he did it I declined saying I didn't
want to disfigure myself <G>. He was rightly mad at all of us as none
followed through on the plan. Tale care

My friend who has the Yellow Rose of Texas says he never thinks about it.
After a few months of getting one it fades from memory and it never enters
his mind. Most folks don;t comment on it and it becomes a non issue. Take

Joe Namath's were not that big a secret. No, this was a carpenter at a
chemical plant who said he liked the feel of them. Take care

No, not really, though I've listened to some of their stuff that I
like. But I've not followed them a' la the Dead. They came at a
different time. My friends' son was a big Phish fan, traveled around
the country to see them. More his generation, it seems

I was reading one of the Sookie Stackhouse books and a vampire shows up
wearing jeans and a Grateful Dead t-shirt, and I had to laugh out loud.

Those T-shirts are quite ubiquitous. I have about 5 or 6 of them
myself.
