With 17 books to her credit, Sue Grafton's heroine private detective Kinsey
Millhone is long over due for the big screen, if not a made for TV movie.

But which actress is best suited to play her ?

The problem as I see it, is that Hollywood is spoiled for choice.

Here is my short list of possible candidates in no kind of order what so
ever.

Marg Helgenberger
Susan Saradon
Melanie Griffith
Danna Delaney
Holly Hunter
Greena Davis
Katie Sagal
Bret Butler
Helen Hunt
Brigit Fonda
Shelley Long
Leslie Ann Warren
Meg Ryan
Julianne Moore
Cybil Shepard
Molly Ringwold
Goldie Hawn
Peri Gilpin
Demi Moore
Sara Jessica Parker
Alison Jenney

Please feel free to add or delete from this list as you see fit.

I saw Sue Grafton at a signing last year, and IIRC (Mitchy, Thalia, help me
out here) she said she will not sell Kinsey to the movies. So it's an
interesting discussion, but don't expect to see Kinsey in theaters.

Kinsey will never be seen on a screen. Sue Grafton worked too many years in
Hollywood and will not sell the rights.

So don't hold your breath.... The books won't be getting the Hollywood" T is for
Treatment."

The young Holly Hunter would have been perfect - if she could get out of
the Kentucky speach thing.

But really, WHAT were you thinking cur???

could any of these (and many more on the list) be LESS Kinsey like?

(I don't think so...)

Melanie Griffith is a horrible actress. She is such a whiner.

Haven't read a Warshawski novel, but could see Romanov playing a tough,
smart-talking woman. She does just fine on "Angel". Problem is, she's
not a name so it's unlikely she'd be chosen.

Pity. She has a touch of Lauren Bacall to her.

Agreed. Helen Hunt would be perfect. She has the physical stature to make
the action credible, and is a flat-out wonderful actress.

You really think so? I think she's the same as in Mad About You in
everything, well for the most part. Always a little bossy and/or neurotic. I
also think she's too sharp, both when it comes to looks and behaviour, to
play Kinsey.

I'd quite like to see Meg Ryan or Drew Barrymore take on a part like this,
play someone with a bit more edge (less girly?) than they normally do.

Or how about Mira Sorvino?

Drew Barrymore is almost 30 now. And she's not even blonde anymore, at least
she wasn't the last time she was on Jay Leno. ;-)

And this is Mira Sorvino: http://us.imdb.com/Name?Sorvino,+Mira

Well, I haven't always wanted to see her as Kinsey but figured she would be
good.

I've never been a Grafton fan, so it's been years since I've read one, but she
was the first person who occurred to me.

Most of those on the list are far too glamorous.

I would pick a male actor made up to look like a woman, and only Ernest
Borgnine springs to mind. He'd be perfect. He has the looks, the figure and the
smile.

Well spotted Ali/John, so let's rephrase the question, if you had to pick a
male actor to play Kittsy Milspoon (or whatever Janet Evanovitch's heroine is
called), in Drag and heavily made up (like say Dustin Hoffman in Tootsie) who
would you chose? So far we have Jim Carey or Ernest Borginine, but I was also
thinking perhaps Ernest P Worrell?

My short list would be:

Jill Hennessy (Crossing Jordan),
or failing that,
Sandra Bullock.

But Kinsey IS kind of sharp. A little prickly at times, extremely
independent. And Helen Hunt's character is As Good as It Gets wasn't in the
least bit neurotic, even if her eventual attraction to Jack Nicholson was
unfathomable (and we are even on topic, as Judith Greber, who wrote the book
the movie is based on also writes mysteries as Gillian Roberts). I think
Helen Hunt gets cast in bossy parts because she is tall and does bossy well,
not because she can't do anything else.

I can't see either of these two. For one thing, they are just too petite.

> Or how about Mira Sorvino?

Well, that could be interesting. Other than Hunt, I think Rene Russo might
be good as Kinsey. She plays strong, smart women well.

Yes, her family has instructions never to allow her books to be turned into any other form of media. But it is interesting to speculate, isn't it? But just about all of the women on your list are way to old. Kinsey is supposed to be her her early to mid-thirties, probably late thirties during the last book. Some of these actresses are actually in their seventies.

Odd to be replying to an 18 year old thread, but I was searching Kinsey Milhone because just the other day I was watching a youtube clip of an actress on a chat show and when she turned to the camera and struck a pose some part of my brain woke up and declared - "That's Kinsey Milhone!" Slim, blue jeans and pullover, medium length brown hair that little more attention than a regular shampoo, and probably a black dress tucked away somewhere just in case.

Anna Kendrick.
