Does anyone know the answer to that? I've tried looking for
information on the net and have so far come up with nothing. Given
that the compact disc was invented in the mid-60s, I am guessing
someone must've invented the jewel case sometime in the 60s-70s? I
know some guy came up with a jewel case for multiple CDs in 1984, but
what about the original single-disc case?

Another thing I'd like to know is, when is going to be perfected so it
doesn't shatter into pieces when dropped three inches onto your desk?

And why is it called a Jewel Case? Who would store their jewels in plastic
especially designed to fracture to pieces if someone even coughs next to it?

The basic patent for the five-inch plastic compact disc was issued in
the early 1980s: US patent 5,305,301.

According to this page:
http://version1.slysauvage.com/textes/disser_t.htm
the jewel case was designed by Peter Doodson of Philips and first
releeased in Japan around 1985.

Others will no doubt have better information.

I tried 5,305,301 and was linked to a patent for something other than
a CD case. I did find a patent by the folks over at Polygram that was
filed in 1982 in Germany and later filed in the U.S. That patent is
4,874,085.

The term "jewel case," in this context, applies also to cassettes, as
well as CDs, so the answer to your question, then, would be circa
1968, when the first cassettes were manufactured. These were preceded
by the eight-track tape, but it was self-contained and came in a paper
sleeve, as opposed to the familiar plastic jewel case of cassettes. As
for CDs, they came out in 1980, so CD jewel cases date from then.
