In September 1996 I visited the Tower of London. As visitors progressed
along the approach to the rooms wherein the Crown Jewels are displayed,
we were presented with dazzling and informative films. The musical
theme of (at least one of) these films was delightful and ennobling. I
never forgot it. I later discovered that the same music was used as the
musical theme of the documentary film 'Discovering Hamlet', which
examines Kenneth Branagh's professional debut as the famous Prince of
Denmark.

I would very much like to learn the identity of this music, or at least
that of its composer. To that end I made a recording of myself stating
very simply the melody as I recall it. The recording may be found at

http://home.columbus.rr.com/arthurofalbion/music/NobleMelody.mp3.

If you have information that would be of help, please send it to
arthuro...@columbus.rr.com.

Thank you very much, and may you enjoy a fabulous Golden Jubilee year.

P.S. If for some reason your system cannot easily handle the 324 KB mp3
version, there is a 2035 KB wav version at
http://home.columbus.rr.com/arthurofalbion/music/NobleMelody.mp3.

How about a MIDI or ABC version, which should convey the same information
in about 2K? I can't handle either of the formats you're offering, but
I do know a lot of tunes that I could imagine being used the way yours
was.

Thank you for your interest in helping me.

I invested in a wav-MIDI converter called the WIDI Music Recognition
System. It did a good job. The result was
http://home.columbus.rr.com/arthurofalbion/music/NobleMelody.mid, a file
that is about 2 KB in size, as you predicted. However, the new MIDI
file lacks the brass timbre of the original wav file. Also, some notes
in the original wav file each correspond to two different notes in the
MIDI-- one very brief and spurious, one valid. You will probably be
able to tell the brief and spurious notes from the valid ones.

Patrick Doyle composed the music for KB's film of Hamlet,
swiftly found at
http://www.filmtracks.com/composers/doyle.shtml
and you can buy both Hamlet and the documentary
from www.amazon.com.

Thank you for your effort.

I already own this CD. Though I seemed to recall that it does not
contain the music I now seek, I examined it again because of your
recommendation. Alas, my memory proved correct. Conceivably, the music
may have been composed in connection with Kenneth Branagh's 1996 film
_Hamlet_. But it was not included in the widely marketed soundtrack CD.

Thanks again,

James Watson
