I think that there have been several excellent uses of Jimi Hendrix music
in recent movies. For instance, "In the Name of the Father" uses "Voodoo
Chile (Slight Return)" as the soundtrack to a spontaneous riot! Two other
recent movies both use Hendrix' version of "All Along the Watchtower."
The first is "Rush," in which the music plays as the Jason-Leigh character
goes out on a dangerous undercover operation. "A Bronx Tale" uses the
same tune to overpowering effect near the end of the movie, when the
young lead is "trapped" in a car with his friends, as they prepare to get
into a lot of trouble.
Any other recent uses of Hendrix music where the music really
_contributes_ to the action? I'm sure there have been several gratuitious
uses where it was basically background music.

It's not recent, but check out _Easy Rider_ ("If 6 Was 9"). Also, be sure
and catch the reissue of _Woodstock_, even if you've aleady seen it on
video -- it's amazing on the big screen with a good sound system.

In SHAKEDOWN, Peter Weller's character has a crisis of the spirit about his
fiancee b/c she doesn't like Jimi Hendrix (she's younger than he is).

In SINGLES, Jimi's grave & the song "Hey Joe" are featured.

The song's real title is "May This Be Love", from the Are You Experienced
album.

As for Jimi's music in films: in "Apocalypse Now" there's a scene where
the sound of a Hendrix-like guitar is heard coming from a soldier's
tent/barracks in the Vietnam jungle. Does anyone know who actually played
the music? Was it Randy Hansen or was it the sound-effects guy from Police
Academy (the black guy who was also in "Cheech & Chong's next movie)?

Keep on rockin,

Actually that was Kyra Sedgewick and the song title is "May This Be Love."
It is interesting that she loves the song because I had heard it was

Man, "If 6 Was 9", what a great song! Took a while for me to grow into it. As
a matter of fact when I heard it first, I didn't really like it, always pressing
the button to skip to the next track. However, when I heard the guitar solos
over and over, I couldn't and still can't stop listening to it repeatedly. One
of my favorite Hendrix tunes indeed...

BTW - I was thinking back as to how I got interested in Hendrix and to tell you
the truth, it's kinda funny. I was watching "The Wonder Years" and heard the
intro to "Purple Haze" and I had to know what song it was. I'd still be
listening to Top 40 crap if I had missed that episode...

In "Better Off Dead" with John Cusack the mailman (as he's walking along
dropping letters and going through people's mail) is listening to Foxy
Lady.
And in Dice's movie "The Adventures of Ford Fairlane" Dice has a guitar
supposedly owned by Hendrix. And when his alarm goes off it plays a
Hendrix tune (can't remember which one though).

The only reason I remember this is because this movie was on local TV last
night...

In Andrew Dice Clay's _Ford Fairlane_ Jimi's music is used all over the place.
Most noticeably whenever Fairlane is waking up, to Purple Haze, with his
stereo full blast. The movie also features what is supposed to be Hendrix's
red Fender.

Ok, me and a friend had an argument a while back about "If 6 Was 9." When
he's singing about "white collar conservatives waving their plastic fingers at

I've always believe that it is freak flag.

Some great cuts. A version of Cat Fish Blues which

He said Freak Flag, which meant hair back then 'cause you could
pretty well tell the freaks from everybody else, by the length
of their hair, or the diameter of their 'fro, in Jimi's case.
Although, I don't think anyone would've questioned Jimi about
it anyway.
I think DavidCrosby referred to it in his song AlmostCutMyHair,
on that black CSN&Y album, way back there.

Yeah, it's "Freak" flag. You've got to listen to this under the
condition it was meant to be listened to. Chemically altered; it is
clearly "freak" flag. I say this out of experience - albeit not recent.

If this dispute continues, I will be forced to go to Jay's Place (TM),

it, but it is without doubt "freak flag."

Please observe how Jimi, Noel, and Mitch are dressed on the cover of
"Are You Experienced" and try to imagine any one of them walking down
the streets of Chicago in 1968. Hair, clothes, shoes - the whole thing
was in strong variance to normal modes of dress. If you weren't around
during that particular era, you may have a hard time comprehending it,
but believe me - "normal" folk did NOT have Afros, pink velvet jackets,
and Screaming Yellow Trousers. Gray flannel was the norm. It didn't
take much to look wierd - Jimi and crew were WAY beyond sore-thumbness
for that era in the GoodOldUSofA. The approaching Democratic convention
would prove that beyond a shadow of a doubt. It didn't take much
deviance from acceptable norms to get your head busted AND, as an enter-
taining sidelight, wind up in court, bound and gagged. Freedom of
speech is a wonderful thing, so long as you didn't try it in Daley's
Chicago.

Wait - am I rambling? Guess so...

In "The American Way", a Dennis Hopper film about a pirate television
station broadcasting from a bomber plane crewed by Vietnam vets,
they use amplified Hendrix music to detonate missiles that were
targeted on their plane. Anyone know which tune exactly?

I love Jimmy Hendrix's music, its as fressh and alive now as it ever was.

I believe that they used "If 6 was 9" in "Point Break", IMHO a rather
forgettable movie. It was during the scene of the party at Boddhi's
house; I guess they were trying to embellish the image of the
surfer/bank-robber as anti-establishment rebel. Pretty cliche, if you
ask me. What was actually cooler was members of the Red Hot Chili
Peppers as drug dealers (or did I imagine that?).

The lyrics on Axis: Bold as Love read "freak." I think it also is clearly
what Jimi is singing... Either they printed the lyrics wrong, or there you
have it.

For those of you who are not baby boomers, your "freak flag" was the
anti-establishment hair, clothes, love beads, etc, that you wore to show
the world what "club" or "camp" you belonged to at a glance, i.e. apart
from the over-thirty, establishment, suit types. It was a common term in
the 60's, and of course I'm simplifying it...

I've always assumed it was "free flag", as it sounds. After all, in
the same song Jimi sings something like "If all the hippies ... cut
off all their hair.. I don't care!", so it would be a bit inconsistent
of him to be boasting about his own. But enough of this train-spotting,
it's a great song and the message is clear enough, really!

I want to recommend the album "Radio One" (Castle Communications label
in England) to everybody as the best Hendrix album other than the
three original ones. It's basically straight studio versions of early
songs, plus some blues and pop standards, done for John Peel in 1967,
but it has a wildness, tightness and exuberance that's wonderful to
hear. The bass riff plus guitar solo that is "Drivin' South"....well,
what can I say, except that it's a one-chord masterpiece?

I checked a book I have called "Hendrix Anthology" which is basically
a book of his music and lyrics. In the book the line is listed as
"freak flag".

Radio One. There are some cuts which are great as well as a couple of
duds, JMO.

Combining the good cuts on Radio One with the recent Hendrix Blues
makes for some great listening. Crank it up!

Has anyone heard the remastered issue from Jimi's Woodstock performance?

I don't know if anyone got this one yet, but the second scene in "In the
Name of the Father": Conlon is describing 1974 Belfast in a flashback;
soldiers mistake him for a sniper, and just as a soldier shoots at him,
Hendrix's "Voodoo Chile (Reprise)" begins, and runs all through the
following scene of chaos and riot. It is a very powerful opening. Many
Hendrix songs convey that feeling of war and chaos in a frighteningly
real way - the "Who's in command here" scene in "Apocalypse Now" comes
to mind. Anyway, check out "In the Name of the Father." Wrenching movie,
great soundtrack.

Yeah, the timing was outragous. The first cords hit like high voltage. If
you're prone to flashbacks, take care; if the sound system is good
enough, the rest of the scene will send you places you don't really want
to go.

It was the first really "modernist" film. It wasn't a breakthrough so
much for the technical innovations as for how Welles used them and
combined them. The use of deep-focus, fast film, ceilings on the sets,
montage sequences, several point-of-view narrators, camera movement and
manipulation of the mise-en-scene were wonderfully innovative. All of
these techniques had been seen before - In Renoir, German expressionism,
etc., but Welles put them all together and created a groundbreaking
American film.

Yes, that was important...not as important a breakthrough, though, as Welles' early use of a John Williams score. He laid the foundation for the productive relationship Williams enjoys with Spielberg, Lucas and Welles' modern action-cinema heirs.
